Hi Everyone. I am a 45 year old female. My mother has two sisters with celiac. I am hypothyroid as are my mother and my daughter. I am of Irish decent. For the past three years I have had IBS-D symptoms. I am trying so hard to get to the reason why. I was convinced it was celiac. I get the bloating pain. I am also on Nexium for reflux. I had my General practicioner und the celiac panel and its all negative. Can you tell me if its a little off?? Or should I be looking else where for my solutions?

Thank you for your help. Im at a loss as to what to do next.

Did they do a total IgA serum with the celiac panel? If your IgA is low, the two IgA tests are worthless. I have low IgA, and my doc did order a total serum, but didn't order any IgG tests. By the time I went to a GI who knew this was a problem, it was too late.

Given your family history, it would be worth investigating. Have you tried a gluten-free diet to see if it alleviates any of your symptoms? A word of caution though, if you wish to be retested, don't stop eating gluten.

Testing for celiac is improving, but still not where it should be, so false negatives are not all that uncommon.

I guess that they did not test the total Iga. I posted all that they gave me. My aunt has convinced me to try the gluten free diet. I have beed doing it for three weeks with great results. I guess my question is what are the odds if my blood came back good that I have celiac? Thank you so much for your help.

The NIH estimates that 30% of us will show negative on a blood panel. My doctors relied on the panel for years while my health went rapidly downhill. None even told me what 'sprue' was or to try the diet. If your dietary results are great your body is telling you what you need to know.

My friend and I see the same doc and she had very similar bloodwork. He said she was def gluten intolerant with numbers like that. She has been gluten-free since the beginning of the year and says she feels way better.

You may be negative for a dx of "Celiac Disease" but not necessarily for gluten intolerance. Unfortunately there is no medically sanctioned test for gluten intolerance but there is a practical test and that is a gluten free diet (as mentioned above). If you have a positive response to the diet (you feel better, symptoms decrease or disappear when off gluten, reappear when you have it) then you can consider yourself "non-Celiac gluten intolerant" or simply gluten intolerant. there is some thought (and much debate) that non-Celiac gluten intolerance may just be the early stages of Celiac Disease.

as mentioned by ravenwoodglass the blood test is false in 30% of cases....negative results can mean a variety of things: you were avoiding gluten b4 the test and therfore didn't produce enough antibodie, or you don't have enough damage to the villi in your intestines that the antibodies (?) show up in the blood test or it could indeed simply mean that you don't have gluten intolerance.

but if you are continuing to have the symptoms described then it would be worthwhile to try a gluten-free diet to see what happens ;) afterall feeling better is what's most important!

      So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped". Your Serum IGA 01 (aka, "total IGA") at 245 mg/dl is within normal range, indicating you are not IGA deficient. But I also think it would be wise to take your doctor's advice about the sucraid diet and avoiding dairy . . . at least until you experience healing and your gut has had a chance to heal, which can take around two years. After that, you can experiment with adding dairy back in and monitor symptoms. By the way, if you want the protein afforded by dairy but need to avoid casein, you can do so with whey protein powder. Whey is the other major protein in dairy.

      hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.
