Something Made Me Sick...?

Hi Everyone, hoping for some advice.....

When I first when gluten free in April, I did great. But then like a rookie celiac I cheated in August a couple of times resulting in being nauseous everyday for two months!!!! Lesson learned. Now I am completely committed to 100% gluten free for life. I get it. So for Sept/Oct I was nauseous (paying the price for August's cheating). All of Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan no cheating whatsoever. I eat as many whole foods as possible. I dont go out to eat (trying to be very strict while I heal).

Yesterday and today starteing getting nauseous again. TOnight really bad. Was out with boyfriend at hockey game, made him take me home. I was also very angry and irritable.

Here is what I have been eating

Breakfast: Glutino bar, apple (washed)

Lunch: bagged romaine lettuce (this I just incorporated back in the past two weeks) I didnt wash it. Balsamic/Strawberry dressing gluten free (never bothered me before), greeen beans (washed and cooked) and cup of kidney beans (Progresso, canned but washed)

Dinner: brocc, zucchini, onion, red potatoe (washed) with diced can diced tomatoe. Diet Pepsi.

What could it have been?

I am thinking the bagged lettuce, kidney beans (I eat alot to up my fiber)

I also had one dose of Metamucil Clear and natural last night.

Also, switched from wine to smirnoff triple distilled vodka.... one small glass at night, is it that??

Thanks in advance for help, I want to figure this out!

First thing that pops to mind is that it's not a very balanced meal. Lots of great veggies, but I didn't see much in the way of carbs, and certainly not much in the way of protein or fat. That might make for low and/or unstable blood sugar - which can absolutely make you nauseated and quite cranky (for me, headachey too).

I tarnalberry, you're rigtht, yesterday was not verry balanced. I usually do have a protein for dinner, and sometimes in my luch too. I use to have almonds for a snack but stopped it for some reason. That might help with the fat.

Still feeling sick this morning. I am thinking it might be the kidney beans, lettuce or vodka. Thanks

You aren't eating enough. If you add up those calories I bet you are only eating like 900 or 1000 calories per day.

You should be eating 3 meals plus 2 snacks or 5-6 mini meals per day to take in enough calories and keep your blood sugar stable.

Aren't you hungry on that amount of food? I would be starving on that.

I did a quick mental calculation and I think you only ate like 600 or 700 calories that day.

Sandsurfgirl.... yeah that was a bad day b/c I was at work all day and going to a hockey game straight from work. So my dinner was lighter than usual. Normally I would have had some meat in it. I recently joined weight watchers so I have been eating on the lean side. I will add some nuts or yogurt and banana. I do need to have a mid afternnon snack a bit more at dinner.

Do you think the bagged lettuce (unwashed) can make sick??

I had been eating it for like two weeks off an on. And although not "gluten" the last time I got sick from ingesting "hidden" gluten in the begining it was a gradual nausea....leading to constant nauseo until I figured out what it was I did wrong. I feel alot better than Friday night and Saturday....but still get nausous after eating breakfast and lunch today.

Any lettuce can potentially have bacteria on it. I always wash the bagged lettuce to make sure, but it's so hard to tell what got you. Make sure you are eating all of your points on WW, and eat your Flex points if you are hungry. Also, if you are working out you need to eat at least some of the AP's so your metabolism doesn't go into starvation mode. I get very nauseous if I don't eat enough or forget to eat. I can feel my blood sugar drop like a roller coaster.

I gotta concur. If you aren't getting enough nutrients, or enough calories, that is probably why you are sick. I get VERY sick when I don't eat enough, and doctors speculate I'm hypoglycemic. Try upping your protein, and next time you get nauseous, try some fruit juice or something with a little sugar in it to get your blood sugar up.

There are also a number of viruses going around this season that involve severe nausea. Who knows?

Oh yeah those stomache bugs are making their way around.

I still think it's not eating enough. I bet when you eat more you'll feel way better.

I also would question your caloric intake. However if you are on a restricted calorie diet of some type people often need to supplement with vitamins. Have you checked all of your vitamins, supplements, and medications?

Smirnoff is made from WHEAT! That was it- try Absolute vodka which is made from Potatoes.

PS- I am recovering for Months too, and glad to hear that this is normal as I am panicking and doing a lot of tests right now with the GP and Natureopath. That made me feel better to read, thank you.

Smirnoff is a gluten free vodka,with exception of the malt drinks. It's actually derived from corn. In reality, ALL distilling alcohol is gluten-free unless gluten is added after the distilling. Distliing takes out the harmful proteins. I know several extremely sensitive people who drink wheat- or rye-based liquors

Trust me, I agree that distilled alcohol is Gluten Free, unfortunately, there are those that will preach up and down that it isn't safe. My thing is that if you are going to advertise that a product is made out of something, you need to research it a little first. I don't know what I would do if I wasn't able to enjoy the occasional glass of Scotch or Irish Whiskey.

I was pretty sure Smirnoff was made from corn and I thought it was safe. I wonder if hard alchol is just too much on my healing intestines right now? Wine, no problems. I really dont know what it was. My nausea is getting better day by day. Who knows, maybe it is not even that I was glutened,maybe some things are just harder then others to digest while going through this healing process.

I appreciate everyones feedback!

You may have another food intolerance going on besides gluten. Soy, or nightshades (tomatoes) or something else.

GFinDC: I eat diced tomatoes every day just about. On veggies, in homemade soup, etc. How do I find out for sure?

Well, take your list of foods you ate the day you got sick. That's your possible problem list right? Eliminate all those items from your diet for a week or so. Then add them back one item every 3 days and see if you have symptoms develop. For items with multiple ingredients you need to add back each ingredient separately to determine the irritant.

so as long as it's distilled alcohol it's fine right? what about flavoured dodkas? also what about mixed drinks, like blue hawaiians and that, which have syrups in them? are those okay to have?? what about malibu??! :huh:

I finally booked an appointment with an allergist after I initiated an eliminations diet 5 years ago. The list of allergens was growing. I was tired of the restriction,frustrated and desperate for answers.

I gave him a list of suspected allergens, and he added a few that I suspected. The test was positive for all of them.

Self diagnosed as gluten intolerant/carb addicted with multiple allergies. Allergist confirmed my suspicions.

6 months ago I started making meals from scratch from gluten-free free and organic products. gluten-free products were making me ill and ADHD.

Now, I have to inspect every package to ensure that they were manufactured in an allergen free assembly line.

I feel okay now, and hopeful that my digestive tract will continue to improve.

Its a real pain in the posterior, and I turn into a ogre when I have to be so picky. But, its way better than being ADHD, and told by friends that I'm being a so and so.

      He is not just a psychiatrist.  He is also a neuroscientist.  And yes, I have already read those studies.   I agree with benfotiamine.  This is short term while glutened/inflammation occurs.  As I had already mentioned, these symptoms no longer exist when this phase passes.  And yes, I know that celiac is a disease of malnutrition.  We are working with a naturopath.

      Thanks for your response.  Everything you mentioned he is and has been doing.  Tobacco is not the same as nicotine.  Nicotine, in the form of a patch, does not cause gastrointestinal irritation.  Smoking does. He is not smoking.  Please do your research before stating false information. Dr. Paul Newhouse has been doing research on nicotine the last 40 years at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

      Im so frustrated and still getting the run around trying to reprove my celiac disease which my past primary ignored for 25 years.I understand that theres a ray of medical that doctors are limited too but not listening and telling the patient ( me) that im not as sensitive as I think and NOT celiac!Correction Mr white coat its not what I think but for cause and affect and past test that are not sticking in my medical records.I get sick violently with foods consumed, not eating the foods will show Im fabulous. After many blood draws and going through doctors I have the HLA- DQ2 positive which I read in a study that Iran conducted that the severity in celiac is in that gene.Im glutenfree and dealing with related issues which core issue of celiac isn't addressed. My skin, right eye, left leg diagestive issues affected. I have high blood pressure because im in pain.Im waisting my time on trying to reprove that Im celiac which is not a disease I want, but unfortunately have.It  has taken over my life personally and professionally. How do I stop getting medically gaslight and get the help needed to bounce back if I ever do bounce back to normal? I thought I was in good care with " celiac specialist " but in her eyes Im good.Im NOT.Sibo positive, IBS, Chronic Fatigue just to name a few and its all related to what I like to call a ghost disease ( celiac) since doctors don't seem to take it seriously.

      @Martha Mitchell, your reaction to the lens implant with gluten sounds like it could be an allergic reaction rather than a celiac reaction. It is possible for a celiac to be also allergic to gluten as it is a protein component in wheat, barley and rye.
