Does anyone know if TUMS is gluten-free????

I was sick a few days ago and out of desperation had 2 of them. I was with my sis and we were shopping in a department store. I got such an attack I thought Id pass out/black out. I had to immediately rush 4 floors down to get to the bathroom. Had horrible stomach pains and unbearable nausea. My poor sister felt so helpless for me!!! Luckily she reached into her bag and pulled out TUMS.

In the past (pre celiac disease) I used to take them because they helped indigestion, reflux, etc). Im not sure if theyre safe, but let me tell you, they saved my life!!!! I felt so much better!!!!

Any ideas or answers?

I will not trust Tums. They told me they will not guarantee their products gluten free because they change their suppliers and so forth.

I thought they just plain WEREN'T gluten-free...dunno what the status is now, but I think they told me a few months ago that they actually contain gluten--not even a cya statement about how it may or may not.

:o Last time we talked to them was late last year and they just would not confirm it so we don't use their products. Maybe they actually added gluten since then...I don't know

Yeah, who knows? Either way, I wouldn't take those...

I spoke with Glaxo Smith Kline about three months ago and was told Tums are not gluten free....this was after the GI suggested my daughter use them for her reflux...Rolaids are gluten free!

God, why didn't I read this thread? I have been having ongoing stomach problems lately and have finally started taking things like Pepsid, Zantac, etc. Last night I was shoping for more Pepsid but both the name brand and store brand said they had "starch " or "pre-gelatinized starch" with no source so I decided not to get them. I got generic Tagament instead (no starch listed). I also got some name brand Tums after reading the label a bunch of times. I took two last night and then two this morning because I was feeling worse.

Now I'm a total basket case, I was crying over my lunch today. Fortunately, I read this thread and won't be having any more Tums. Damn!

Argh!!!

I carry a small bottle of Pepto Bismo Caplets in my purse and they solve the problem if I accidently get into gluten. Changed purses and no room for them. Went to the dentist yesterday for teeth cleaning, small cavity and a broken tooth. & 7 shots of novicaine and then the heart burn started. And it stayed with me through all of my errands and the long drive home. Took the Pepto and it went away. Have no idea what caused it at the dentist. I stay away from Tums, etc. because I am afraid to make the problem worse.

Just prescribed by my gastro dr. with Aciphex. (rabeprazole sodium). I take Prilosec, and pepcid. Prob o.d.ing on antacids. I started this topic with questions about tums. I don't know anything about the contents that my doc's have suggested or prescribed, but I think we all should look into these. Sometimes, the more I feel blouted, the more I take antacids and maybe they just don't work, or I feel more blouted because I take them.

Any information on the above antacids would be appreciated, and apparently to many of us. I know my GP would not have a clue about what I can put in my mouth or not as he treated me for IBS for 27years and kept hearing me complain.

Have not seen him since by poss. biopsy. Plan to totally educate him on celiac disease when I do.

WHAT IS A SAFE ANTACID, OVER THE COUNTER, OR PRESCRIBED? Any experts out there.

Insist that your dentist check the gluten statis of everything they use. My dentist was told I was celiac but I kept getting sick everytme I went. Turned out they just wrote celiac in my chart and that was it. I called around until I found a new dentist that would check everything. She didn't even want to use a cotton ball once because she hadn't checked! Anyway she discovered many of the items they use routinely contain gluten but that there are readily available alternitives for all of them. Their office even bought special non-powdered gloves to use with me. I haven't had any problems since and am halfway through the 'rebuild my celiac mouth' (8 crowns and four facings). I need an awful lot of novacaine too I wonder if that is celiac connected.

Haven't thought about dentisry.....? Mine is a good friend and I will make sure that her is aware of celiac disease's in his office. He is a bit hypocond. himself, so I am sure that he will make himself aware to the utmost. Thanks for that info. and so good to pass on. We all can learn from this. - Lisa B

It sounds like you have a very reasonable GI doctor, who diagnosed you based on family history and symptoms after eating gluten. I would consider you lucky! The other option would be to make yourself very sick by doing weeks of a gluten challenge prior to an endoscopy.

Hi Colleen H,   I suffered with the pins and needles/burning feeling in my legs and feet for at least  6 years until my Nephrologist figured out that I had to go on a low salt diet.  He said my kidneys weren't strong enough to remove the salt.  The simple fix was a diuretic, but that med leaves the uric acid behind, so that wasn't an option.  On the bright side the low salt diet lowered my BP over 20 points and and the pins and needles/burning feeling went away.  Good Luck and hope this helps.

I did ... But aren't we going to be vitamin deficienct if we are not eating due to being sick ?? If the food we eat is gluten free and we have other sensitivities , how do we get out of the cycle??  Thank you

Anyone else get pins and needles. ??? Burning feeling ? Heat makes it so much worse 😔  Winter is here.  I had to lower my thermostat because I couldn't take that hot air feeling 😔  Hopefully it goes away soon
