Tips For Cravings?

Do you have any tips that help you get past any cravings you might have?

I have one: When people are talking about cake or cupcakes, and I don't have time to bake gluten-free, I have a can of gluten-free frosting in the fridge and I have a spoonful. It takes the craving right away for me!

I still crave a hamburger bun when I have a hamburger. I haven't found one that I like.

Otherwise, I find I have very few cravings. I've gotten pretty good doctoring up rice crust pizza. The rice pasta is fine. The longer I am gluten free, the less cravings I have!

Kinnikinnick makes a really good hamburger bun. Have you tried them?

When ever I can't decide what I want to eat, I always fall back on an Udi's multi grain gluten-free bagel with blueberry cream cheese...Then I am happy again!!

I could use some more tips...trying to eat only whole foods right now, and today my cravings have been off the charts :( I need to get some more variety in or something, but kinda broke and unsure what to try (seem to be good with apple, pears, rice, chicken, spinach, carrots, parsley, olive oil, salt & pepper)

trying hard to not cave and have a Lara bar because I'm afraid of the dairy~!

I was told once that cravings usually don't last more than a couple minutes. Go fold clothes or sweep your car or small task to keep your mind and hands occupied for 5 or 10 min, then put your feet up and take a few deep breathes, lots of times craving gone...

honestly being so sick I thought I was going to die 3 times over the last 4 years has finnaly made all the desire go away. I can watch my coworkers eat pizza and breakfast treats anytime. And I don't want it. Not anymore. I'm so glad that the battle is over and the transition is made, it's a relief.

They are *very* good! I just don't enjoy a hamburger w/o the bun and these do it for me.

Hamburger buns: Katz Challah rolls. These things are awesome. WAY better than average rolls. I'm not a fan of Kinnikinnich unless that is my only choice. The taste is good, but the texture is funky, to my taste. :)

I don't think Larabars have dairy in them, actually. Nuts and fruit-based are the only ones I've had.

Bertille buns are the best!..Of course now Udi's & Rudi's plus canyon bakehouse all have gluten-free buns. Many choices ....When I crave or used to crave something it was a sweet thing so I went for nuts & M&M's. And Idon't likechocolate!!!!! Peanut butter & nutrella.....

Also there are many bakeries that you can find cupcakes, cookies & so on. Order some & stock your freezer.

Gluten free has never been better with all the choices ....

It's really hard to explain to someone who hasn't eaten gluten-free bread before that it can have a grainy texture. Our local pizzeria does a gluten-free crust and I've tried it w/ different toppings and just can't stomach the grainy texture in the crust. ick! It's really sad too because they have some of the best pizza & pasta around but I don't think I'll ever be able to eat there again.

One of my favorite snacks to enjoy w/ the family when playing games is peanuts and plan M&M's...everyone loves them and I don't have to worry about getting sick. =)

I don't like any of the bought baked goods, especially Kinnickinnik, (and we have no bakery or anything remotely close to where we live to try) so when I have a craving (and they can be INTENSE!) I bake my own breadsticks, crackers, bread, whatever. I know that you said you don't have time to bake (and I'm not trying to persuade you!) but just know that my cravings are just unreal, too, so I can understand! I've been gluten-free just over a month so perhaps the cravings are still withdrawal from tons of gluten on my gluten challenge. Plus I feel no differently whether on or off gluten. It can be really tough! When the cravings happen I make an interesting fruit salad and drizzle with a honey/lime juice/poppyseed mixture. I've even made gluten-free BBQ sauces to spoon into my mouth!! Weird, I know... ;)

I also make cupcakes/cakes/cookies and freeze lots extra so all I have to do is thaw and eat, and even throw on some scrumptious buttercream. Perhaps a weekend thing if you have the time so you don't panic at your next craving...

I've heard that when you have a craving to brush your teeth. Then you won't feel like having anything on your just-cleaned teeth!

Maybe my problem is that I just love food too darned much! :P

I bought a box of LaraBars from Costco before I went dairy-free...they're the chocolate ones and I'm pretty sure they have dairy in the chocolate chips.

***Omg, nope, Ijust checked the website again and they don't use dairy in the chocolate chips but they are made on a line that makes chocolate chips with dairy and soy so they just can't GUARANTEE dairy and soy free as there may be trace amounts.

Good to know! I will check it out. I tried a couple other brands but didn't like them at all!

The other LARA bars (not chocolate)are really good and do not have dairy...give them a try. They are naturally sweet and take the "edge" off my cravings. :) Soy free, too!

healinginprogress Enthusiast

Shouldn't have tried the chocolate ones......... :(

 there isn't a single person on here who hasn't made a boo-boo when first going gluten-free/DF and choosing a food that wasn't agreeable with them...it's a learning curve :)

I ate one or two of those chocolate ones at the beginning too.... They're pretty good, actually... :D

but yeah, it's best to avoid them for now.

healinginprogress Enthusiast

LOL yeah, they are really good...the texture was fantastic, so different from what I've been eating. It was great...for about ten minutes :P But the gastro symptom didn't last too long at least. I'm super tired and foggy, but my tummy isn't inflamed anymore.

hmmm....I'm less tired and waaaay less foggy but my innards are still inflamed....we are a pair!

healinginprogress Enthusiast

LOL we are! Hope you're feeling better today...I'm still very tired and can't decide whether I should rest or exercise to help it. I have to work in four hours...4pm til 2am :(

Now Katz has Hamburger buns as well which is fantastic, a burger with letters and tomatoes and ketchup but make sure the ketchup is gluten-free as well

Eat chocolate. Look around on this site. We have had this discussion a lot. Here is an example. I found dark chocolate helped with withdrawal headaches the first week.

Poppi Enthusiast

Eat chocolate.

I love you.

I'm not sure what the selection is like in the States but up here in Canada my surefire safe (for me that means gluten and artificial colour free) fallbacks are Cadbury Fruit and Nut, Cocoa Camino Dark Chocolate with Orange and the gigantic Lindt Dark Chocolate bars you can get at the grocery store for $6. I always have at least one of those things lurking in the closet. The nice thing about dark chocolate is you can kill a chocolate craving with a couple small squares.

The biggest thing for me in satisfying cravings is having really good baked treats in the freezer. I bake things like flourless chocolate cake, Gluten Free Pantry chocolate truffle brownies (I add almonds), gluten-free chocolate chip cookies and gluten-free apple crisp (I can handle Bob's gluten-free oats) and once the family has had a serving each I divide the rest up into single servings and freeze them for me. It's nice to be able to grab a brownie or a piece of cake or a snack size ziploc with 3 cookies in it when I have a craving or if we're going somewhere and I want to take a dessert with me.

I also keep a tub of Chapman's ice cream (it's Canadian I think) in the freezer for my personal consumption.

@BlessedinBoston, it is possible that in Canada the product in question is formulated differently than in the USA or at least processed in in a facility that precludes cross contamination. I assume from your user name that you are in the USA. And it is also possible that the product meets the FDA requirement of not more than 20ppm of gluten but you are a super sensitive celiac for whom that standard is insufficient.

No,Lindt is not gluten free no matter what they say on their website. I found out the hard way when I was newly diagnosed in 2000. At that time the Lindt truffles were just becoming popular and were only sold in small specialty shops at the mall. You couldn't buy them in any stores like today and I was obsessed with them 😁. Took me a while to get around to checking them and was heartbroken when I saw they were absolutely not gluten free 😔. Felt the same when I realized Twizzlers weren't either. Took me a while to get my diet on order after being diagnosed. I was diagnosed with small bowel non Hodgkins lymphoma at the same time. So it was a very stressful time to say the least. Hope this helps 😁.

@Jmartes71, I understand your frustration and anger.  I've been in a similar situation where no doctor took me seriously, accused me of making things up, and eventually sent me home to suffer alone.   My doctors did not recognize nutritional deficiencies.  Doctors are trained in medical learning institutions that are funded by pharmaceutical companies.  They are taught which medications cover up which symptoms.  Doctors are required to take twenty  hours of nutritional education in seven years of medical training.  (They can earn nine hours in Nutrition by taking a three day weekend seminar.)  They are taught nutritional deficiencies are passe' and don't happen in our well fed Western society any more.  In Celiac Disease, the autoimmune response and inflammation affects the absorption of ALL the essential vitamins and minerals.  Correcting nutritional deficiencies caused by malabsorption is essential!  I begged my doctor to check my Vitamin D level, which he did only after making sure my insurance would cover it.  When my Vitamin D came back extremely low, my doctor was very surprised, but refused to test for further nutritional deficiencies because he "couldn't make money prescribing vitamins.". I believe it was beyond his knowledge, so he blamed me for making stuff up, and stormed out of the exam room.  I had studied Nutrition before earning a degree in Microbiology.  I switched because I was curious what vitamins from our food were doing in our bodies.  Vitamins are substances that our bodies cannot manufacture, so we must ingest them every day.  Without them, our bodies cannot manufacture life sustaining enzymes and we sicken and die.   At home alone, I could feel myself dying.  It's an unnerving feeling, to say the least, and, so, with nothing left to lose, I relied in my education in nutrition.  My symptoms of Thiamine deficiency were the worst, so I began taking high dose Thiamine.  I had health improvement within an hour.  It was magical.  I continued taking high dose thiamine with a B Complex, magnesium. and other essential nutrients.  The health improvements continued for months.  High doses of thiamine are required to correct a thiamine deficiency because thiamine affects every cell and mitochondria in our bodies.    A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function.  The cerebellum of the brain is most affected.  The cerebellum controls things we don't have to consciously have to think about, like digestion, balance, breathing, blood pressure, heart rate, hormone regulation, and many more.  Thiamine is absorbed from the digestive tract and sent to the most important organs like the brain and the heart.  This leaves the digestive tract depleted of Thiamine and symptoms of Gastrointestinal Beriberi, a thiamine deficiency localized in the digestive system, begin to appear.  Symptoms of Gastrointestinal Beriberi include anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, headaches, Gerd, acid reflux, gas, slow stomach emptying, gastroparesis, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation, incontinence, abdominal pain, IBS,  SIBO, POTS, high blood pressure, heart rate changes like tachycardia, difficulty swallowing, Barrett's Esophagus, peripheral neuropathy, and more. Doctors are only taught about thiamine deficiency in alcoholism and look for the classic triad of symptoms (changes in gait, mental function, and nystagmus) but fail to realize that gastrointestinal symptoms can precede these symptoms by months.  All three classic triad of symptoms only appear in fifteen percent of patients, with most patients being diagnosed with thiamine deficiency post mortem.  I had all three but swore I didn't drink, so I was dismissed as "crazy" and sent home to die basically.   Yes, I understand how frustrating no answers from doctors can be.  I took OTC Thiamine Hydrochloride, and later thiamine in the forms TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) and Benfotiamine to correct my thiamine deficiency.  I also took magnesium, needed by thiamine to make those life sustaining enzymes.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins, so the other B vitamins must be supplemented as well.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   A doctor can administer high dose thiamine by IV along with the other B vitamins.  Again, Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine should be given if only to rule Gastrointestinal Beriberi out as a cause of your symptoms.  If no improvement, no harm is done. Share the following link with your doctors.  Section Three is especially informative.  They need to be expand their knowledge about Thiamine and nutrition in Celiac Disease.  Ask for an Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test for thiamine deficiency.  This test is more reliable than a blood test. Thiamine, gastrointestinal beriberi and acetylcholine signaling.  https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12014454/ Best wishes!

Wondering if anyone knows whether Lindt chocolate balls are gluten free. The Lindt Canadian website says yes but the Lindt USA website says no. The information is a bit confusing.
