I Am So Dumb

So I am gluten-free about 7 months. Have been on a very low carb diet and started drinking soy milk (organic/non gmo) and my neuro symptoms seem to have gone rampant. So today, I am making breakfast for my husband, a toasted english muffin with almond butter. I dropped the almond butter onto each half so I wouldn't contaminate the almond butter...I spread it with the spoon and promptly PUT THE SPOON IN MY MOUTH AND ATE THE LEFTOVERS on the spoon.

So, no stomach symptoms but every nerve in my body is screaming. Toe, heels, fingers, wrists, tongue, tips of ears, tip of my nose. My shins feel like I have the worst shinsplints.

I am so irritated. I have stopped dairy, soy, most grains to try to get better but instead I am sliding horrendously backwards.

Just venting. Crappy crappy horrible day. Anxiety is huge.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

So sorry you are dealing with that!! I'm assuming it just didn't occur to you until after you did it. I actually have nightmares of eating something I shouldn't and then trying to do everything I can to get it back out.

Stuck the spoon in my mouth, ate the stuff and then literally started SWEARING.

I have had those dreams! Lat week I dreamt that I was at my niece's house and she was giving me belgian waffles and cake and I didn't want to eat it but did anyway.

It is just so frustrating because the Dr's don't know what to do (not blaming them at all but it is a fact) and I don't SEEM to have any more vitamin deficiencies.

Luckily my husband/family/co-workers are super understanding. I cannot imagine what it would be like if they didn't believe me...

Thanks for the sympathy!

Yep, been there done that. Old habits die hard and licking the spoon is something we learned at our mother's knee. :D Feel better soon!!!

This was a hard habit to break for me when making gluttony PB&J for kid. Today I almost ate the blob of jelly that fell off the bread.

What helps is that I don't lick the spoon or scrape off the plate or the knife even for my own jar of PB to break the habit.

I've had to stop myself from licking my fingers on numerous occasions. Habits like that are so hard to break. I'm just washing my hands an awful lot nowadays.

I'm guessing that it's just something you have to ride out. Man, I wish there were a way to reverse the consequences somehow. But with autoimmune, I think there is little anyone can do. Hopefully, it'll all be over in a matter of days, which will probably *feel* like months. (((Hugs)))

Ha, yeah. My recurring nightmare was having some "nibblies" from a bowl at a party. I'd do that without thinking when I was dieting (to lose weight), I guess my subconcsious didn't trust me not to do it after I went gluten free.

And one time I dreamed I was being chased by cupcakes on little legs.

adab8ca, I'm so sorry you feel so bad, I hope that goes soon. It's a totally understandable mistake to have made, I'm sure I'd have done the same if my place wasn't entirely gluten free. Feel better! And no more kicking yourself :-)

That's awful! Convert him to gluten free english muffins?

I did that before.....so sorry! hope your reactions isn't to bad. I had to start asking my husband to make his own sandwiches because I wasn't thinking and would lick the knife. I wear gloves now so I won't lick my fingers. It helps a lot :)

me too! it helped so much in the winter weather b/c i didn't have to wash my hands every two seconds - they're the kind they use in restaurants (disposable) and latex-free :)

I, too, use gloves after I came close to licking my fingers too often. And I'm paranoid that I'll miss something if I just wash them.

Also, I noticed that after I had guests over (don't normally have gluten in the house) that my fingers itched and broke out in bumps which was a new symptom/problem. Perhaps I'm also allergic to wheat. So I wear gloves whenver...

Ha! This is great! I have gluten filled nightmares from time to time (like, $#!*!! I just accidentally ate a twix!), but my food has never animated.

Thank you— yes, valid and essential— The issue either doctors is that every one I have tried to talk to about this has essentially rolled their eyes and dismissed me as a hypochondriac, which gets discouraging. I believe a diagnosis would help me to be taken seriously by doctors as well as being validating, but can carry on without it.    There are many, probably most people in my area of my age and gender, who avoid gluten, but many just avoid it casually— eating the occasional plate of wheat pasta or a delicious-looking dessert, or baking cookies with wheat flour for gatherings.  That is not an option for me. I don’t eat other people’s cooking or go to restaurants that do not have strict cross- contamination procedures. It can be boring and lonely, and people do look at me as if I am being a bit dramatic but weeks of symptoms after a single small exposure has taught me to respect my experience.    Thank you very much for your response— sometimes I just need to hear that I am not crazy—

You’re not crazy—some people have severe neurological and physical reactions to gluten, not just digestive issues. While testing can be tricky without eating gluten, documenting symptoms and seeing a specialist familiar with atypical celiac or gluten-related disorders can help. Your reactions are real, and it’s valid to be cautious.

You might consider asking for a referral to a RD (Registered Dietician) to help with food choices and planning a diet. Even apart from any gluten issues, you will likely find there are some foods you need to avoid because of the shorter bowel but you may also find that your system may make adjustments over time and that symptoms may improve.

I wish Dr’s would have these discussions with their patients. So frustrating but will continue to do research. Absolutely love this website. I will post any updates on my testing and results.  Thank you
