Amy's Was Okay, Got Diarrhea, Thought Nothing Of It. Then This.

Amy's was okay and has been a pretty staple frozen food provider for a while for me, for the most part she still is.

Here is a list of products sold by her that have over hundreds consumed and no gluten reaction to date

  • Sante Fe Bowl
  • Cheese Enchilada
  • Bistro Burger

And recently, I have had diahrrea not once but 3 times from Gluten Free Non Dairy Mac N Cheese. I thought, hmm it must be an ingredient right?

Well that wasn't even the worst, recently I tried the Gluten Free Non Dairy Burrito's, instantly I became stupid, you know celiac stupid.

Then I came down with flu like symptoms, stomach pains, etc. And that was the only thing I aten in an entire 12 hour period. It was terrible, I felt like I ate literally nothing at all and it was sitting there in my stomach like a rock.

I don't know what is going on with Amy's products but they seriously are inconsistent and need to be re-examined and re-thought as being gluten free.

I also would like to help everybody out by saying I have reacted to Cheeto's, Lay's Salt n Vinegar, and Reeses Pieces.

I stay away from Amy's. I have always had a reaction to anything I eat of hers. :(

I agree with txplowgirl. A lot of us have issues with Amy's products. I can't eat anything made my Lays except Stax. I eat Kettle Brand chips and Stax. I have had problems with Hershey's too. These foods are gluten free, I just think that they have cross contamination issues. Some of us are more sensitive than others.

You spoke like you where me, I can't eat a single piece of Hershey's and Lay's gives me problems.

I have the same issue! Almost time I eat Amy’s frozen meals! Especially the Veggie Loaf, the Chinese Noodles, the Pad Thai, and any Mac & Cheese except the boxed (non-frozen) kind. I was starting to think it was some other ingredient because the ones I eat all say they are gluten-free. But if it isn’t gluten, what could it be??

While I don't have any bad reactions to Amy's products, But I do have severe reactions to Pamela's products.  While I love her many wonderful foods, the terrible diarrhea and stomach pains make it so not worth it for me.  I'm doing much better on low sugar and low carbs while not completely Keto. Seems like Celiac disease reactions affect each individual differently, and it's still a great mystery even though we all avoid gluten like the plague.

Because these are processed foods, you could be reacting to any ingredient.  For example, I am a celiac who despite having healed, still has intolerances to garlic and Xanthan Gum.

You have that right!  Simply going gluten free may not be enough to feel well.  So many people have intolerances to other foods that may or may not resolve with healing.  There is no “one-size-fits-all” gluten free diet.

I'm not sure the reactions to Amy's are related to gluten. I have searched online to find if others have a reaction because I have been in denial that it is Amy's soups upsetting my stomach, so glad to find this page. My mind says these are all good ingredients, so why stomach rumbles, etc? I don't have ANY eating intolerance, I can eat any foods any time of the day or night and have no digestion problems, but Amy's soups especially the Spanish one, but some others too are so not right. I've bought loads of her soups in the pandemic and still have around 12 tins in the cupboard. They may have to go to the food bank. :( Maybe someone with iron constitution can handle this. I thought I did have an iron constitution - but something's wrong here....

@DebJ14, You said "husband has low platelets, bruises easily and gets bloody noses just from Fish Oil  He suggested he take Black Cumin Seed Oil for inflammation.  He discovered that by taking the Black Seed oil, he can eat carbs and not go into A Fib, since it does such a good job of reducing inflammation."   I don't think black seed oil is lowering inflammation.  It's lowering blood glucose levels. Black cumin seed lowers blood glucose levels.  There's a connection between high blood glucose levels and Afib.    Has your husband been checked for diabetes?   Must Read: Associations of high-normal blood pressure and impaired fasting glucose with atrial fibrillation https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36750354/

Healthy Omega Three fats.  Olive oil or flaxseed oil, oily fish, fatty cuts of meat.   Our bodies run much better on burning fats as fuel.  Diets based on carbohydrates require an increased amount of thiamine to process the carbs into fuel for the body.  Unfortunately, thiamine mononitrate is used to enrich rice.  Thiamine mononitrate is relatively unusable in the body.  So a high carb diet can further decrease thiamine stores in the body.  Insufficient thiamine in the body causes the body to burn body fat and muscle for fuel, so weight loss and muscle wasting occurs.  Those extra carbohydrates can lead to Candida (often confused with mold toxicity) and SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth).   Losing weight quickly is a symptom of thiamine insufficiency.  Muscle wasting is a symptom of thiamine insufficiency.  I lost sixty pounds in a month.   Having difficulty putting weight on and keeping it on is a symptom of thiamine insufficiency.   The AIP diet works because it eliminates all grains and grasses, rice, quinoa, all the carbs.  Without the carbs, the Candida and SIBO get starved and die off.  Easy way to change your microbiome is to change what you feed it.  With the rowdy neighbors gone, the intestine can heal and absorb more nutrients.   Supplementing with essential vitamins and minerals is beneficial.  Talk to your doctor and nutritionist.  Benfotiamine is a form of thiamine that promotes intestinal healing.  The eight B vitamins are water soluble, so if you don't need them, they can be gotten rid of easily.   Night shades are excluded on the AIP diet.  Potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant are not allowed on the AIP diet.  They contain alkaloids that promote "a leaky gut".  Benfotiamine can help here. Sweet potatoes are avoided because they contain thiaminases, chemicals that break thiamine so that the body cannot use it.   The AIP diet has helped me.

The reaction one gets when they get glutened varies a lot from person to person.  This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):

A gluten ingestion can last for many months.  Many years ago there was a celiac conference in Fl.  Everyone there got contaminated with some having difficulty 6 months to recover.  It will hit your Lympatic system and spread  through the body and effect your nevous system as well. Most times when I get glutened it is from a prescription med that wasn't checked close enough.  the Pharmacuticals change vendors all the time.
