Claussen Pickles Or Mayo?

Lindseybsmith

I'm confused on what got me yesterday. I'm slightly new to going gluten free.

I had some tuna with mayo and a Claussen pickle yesterday. Something in that meal got me. I had a bad reaction, as I usually do when I ingest gluten. But through my own research, i've read where people are saying that Kraft will label if a product has gluten. But I am not so sure after having those pickles.

Both the Kroger mayo and Claussen pickles had vinegar in them which I thought were fine for me, and both also had "natural flavors" on the ingredient list which i know can be a hidden gluten factor. Kraft did not label these pickles as containing gluten like everyone says, so I'm confused if it was the mayo or the pickles.

Does anyone have any idea which item it was that got me? or was it both? Anyone else have problems with Claussen pickles? I've had other types of pickles with no problems.

Thanks for the guidance in advance! ;)

You said you are new, so there is a chance you have cross-contaminated mayo. (Good old days of dipping utensil back into jar for alittle extra adds crumbs to the jar)

You also could have a sensitivty to eggs.

I didn't have any eggs in the tuna and the mayo was a new squeeze bottle, just opened. I am certain there wasn't any cross contamination going on. It was something I ate in either the mayo or those pickles. Possibly something that fell under the "natural flavor" ingredient.

who knows? I got new mayo that says gluten free on the bottle and not eating claussen pickles again. Just curious if anyone else had any issues with mayo or claussen.

thanks for cross contamination tip.

Mayo has eggs in it.

Gluten doesn't hide, especially in Kraft products. What did you eat earlier? Maybe it bothered you? Vinegar is rather harsh and acidic and can bother your stomach.

The only issue that I could think of with the Clauseen pickles would be if you are one of the very rare folks that don't handle distilled gluten.

You also have to keep in mind that it isn't always the last thing we ate that got us. Gluten reactions can be delayed and that at times makes it very hard to figure out what got us.

In addition, if you're new to the diet and have not healed enough, all foods (gluten or not) can be problematic.

Lindseybsmith Newbie

thank you all for your help and suggestions. i just assumed it was what i recently ate because it was almost immediately after lunch. I had been fine up to that point and gluten free for awhile. then i ate and got headache, blurred vision, nauseous, then came the stomach problems. i hope i'm not sensitive to eggs now too. i love eggs. we shall see. have to figure this stuff out a day at a time.

thanks again.

Welcome to the forum! I do buy Claussen Kosher dill pickles (the minis) and haven't had a problem with them. When you're new to eating gluten-free, most anything can bother you as our bodies can be pretty wonky at times. I do trust Kraft products as they are exceptionally good at labeling.

Thank you!! Kraft seems to be very trusted by everyone, so that is good to know. Are there any issues with cottage cheese that i should be aware of?

I have never seen a cottage cheese that contained gluten, but of course, always read the labels.

It's often recommended that a newly diagnosed, go dairy free for a while. It can produce the same type of symptoms as gluten, until the villi begin to heal.

If dairy products are a problem for you, you might need to avoid them for now.

I eat the pickles just fine. However, I cannot handle even gluten-free mayo because of soy. It took me many months to figure out I was bloating and having a similiar reaction to soy like I do gluten. Did your tuna contain soy? keep a food diary and that should help pinpoint problem foods for you. Kraft is a good company I trust to lable.

The prior post all offer great suggestions, it's a learning process, it does get better :)

Lindseybsmith Newbie

i am keeping a food diary, so hopefully it will get better and this will help pinpoint things. Thanks to all of you. You've been very, very helpful!! :D

You could write down all the ingredients of the food items you ate and maybe something will stick out after a while. Most canned tuna and most mayo have soy in them. That is at least one possible common ingredient that is a top 8 allergen.

StarKist Selects tuna is soy-free if you find it necessary to eliminate soy.

I tried Claussen Kosher Dills for the first time several weeks ago with questionable results. I will try again soon.

Also note, reactions do not show up immediately in everyone. Mine take three days--makes it difficult sometimes to determine what got me, even with a detailed food diary.

I just ran across this thread again. Thought I would add that I have been eating Claussen Pickles with no problem.

I'm thinking soy....like GFinDC said.

I had the same issue.

Couldn't believe it was soy too.

Hard to figure that out.

I use Earth Balance mayo.

They make one with soy too now, but the original version is soy free.

It's pretty good too.

Most mayo is made of eggs. You can get soy mayo but you didn't get that kind.

Claussen garlic pickles cause a distinct gluten reaction for me, regardless of how many times I read or am told they are ok, they always cause a reaction.

Hi all I’ve been celiac for 4 years now, I’ve done pretty well to avoid it thus far. Last night I took the wrong pizza out of the freezer and ate the whole lot!! The non gluten and gluten pizza boxes are both very similar.   2 hours later I was throwing up violently on my hands and knees over the loo.  .horrendous stomach pains,  My hair was wet from sweat every part of my body was wet. What an awful experience, just had a bad headache today  fortunately.    Is their any products/pills anyone takes if they have realised they have just been glutened to make the symptoms a little less worse.  thanks

Yes, do take your B Complex with Benfotiamine or Thiamax.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins in the B Complex to make energy and enzymes, so best to take them together earlier in your day.  Taking them too close to bedtime can keep you too energetic to go to sleep.   The Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine is Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride, another form of thiamine the body likes.  The Thiamine HCl just helps the Benfotiamine work better.   Read the label for how many milligrams are in them.  The Mega Benfotiamine is 250 mgs.  Another Benfothiamine has 100 mgs.  You might want to start with the 100 mg.    I like to take Thiamax in the morning with a B Complex at breakfast.  I take the Benfotiamine with another meal.  You can take your multivitamin with Benfotiamine at lunch.   Add a magnesium supplement, too.  Thiamine needs magnesium to make some important enzymes.  Life Extension makes Neuro-Mag, Magnesium Threonate, which is really beneficial.  (Don't take Magnesium Oxide.  It's not absorbed well, instead it pulls water into the digestive tract and is used to relieve constipation.)  I'm not a big fan of multivitamins because they don't always dissolve well in our intestines, and give people a false sense of security.  (There's videos on how to test how well your multivitamin dissolves.).  Multivitamins don't prevent deficiencies and aren't strong enough to correct deficiencies.   I'm happy you are trying Thiamax and Benfotiamine!  Keep us posted on your progress!  I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.

I looked further into Thiamax Vitamin B1 by objective nutrients and read all the great reviews. I think I will give this a try. I noticed only possible side affect is possibly the first week so body adjusts. Life Extensions carries Benfotiamine with Thiamine and the mega one you mentioned. Not sure if both in one is better or seperate. some reviews state a laxative affect as side affect. SHould I take with my super B complex or just these 2 and multivitamin? I will do further research but I appreciate the wonderful explanation you provided on Thiamine.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?
