I understand you guys, so don't worry :-) I'll drop the yogurt for now and take the powders and pills. Just the thought of it makes me anxious but I really do get what you're saying, and who am I to argue with the ones who are feeling well now :-)

Thanks for your concerns and for explaining through my stubbornness!

So in reality, a probiotic supplement is a much more natural way of getting the good bacteria you need than storebought yogurt. If you can find an organic, whole milk, plain yogurt, I would say go for it a few months from now. For now, it probably isn't a good idea to introduce any dairy. You're still healing.

I would agree, though I'm late to this thread. I had given up all dairy except butter months before going gluten-free. About a month or so ago I tried some sheep's milk feta from Greece, and it seemed fine. Then I tried some Danish havarti, also seems fine. So that I could have a little more variety, I also wanted to try some yogurt, but all of the ones I found, even the organic ones that have fruit added also have 'natural flavors'. I'm avoiding all 'natural flavors' as though it says 'MSG' instead. Even though I had to get a larger container, I got some Nancy's whole milk plain organic yogurt and figured I'd add my own fruit. I just tried a little bit last night with some apple, and I think it's ok but I'm going to try it at least a couple more times to be sure.

I also take a probiotic supplement, which has been helpful.

Edit: It looks like you were posting a reply at the same time I was! Maybe it'll be helpful later...

It's hell being patient isn't it?

I, personally, am NO patient patient. <_< I have to "self-talk" all the time and remind myself to chill about all this.

I want to be 100% NOW, dammit, but it just does not happen that way.

I'm looking at years to be THERE. Doc says "Sorry, but that's what it takes. Time."

I look at where I am NOW and see healing happens!!

And that's just me. Does not mean it's going to take that long for you. :)

You guys probably know my expression by now, don't you?

"It just IS what it is....until it ISN'T."

Nobody likes that, but IH speaks da truth.

The probiotic caps will enable you to add new foods to your list faster & we know you want to add foods! It's hell being patient isn't it?

BTW, I rather like the term sweet water fish. Sounds yummier than saying fresh water fish. This coming from a person who has a great dislike for eating fish, excepting shrimp & lobster, which are crustaceans anyway.

Faster is always better yes :-)

Sweet water fish is what swedes call it :-D Didn't you say you had Scandinavian ancestors or was it another person?

You've been gluten-free for the same amount of time as squirmingitch.. Let us know how it goes with the yogurt!

I'm not exactly sure if this could work for you (and I haven't read all the replies..), Dani... but one of my favorite snacks is apple with different things on it. Adding a little lemon is pretty tasty.. or baked in cinnamon and sugar or brown sugar (like an apple crisp without the top), or peanut butter or other nut butters have been hits over here.

If you can do chocolate, we've enjoyed chocolate covered banana, too. :)

I'm blanking on all the different treats we've tried...

LOL! The reason I dislike fish is b/c I grew up on the river (salt water) & we were not rich so fishing provided a LOT of food for our family as it did many other families in the area. So we ate fish about 5 nights a week. I wasn't crazy about it in the first place but eating it that often kind of turned me off. I will eat select fish --- snook -- which very few people will have heard of & are not sold; you have to catch them with a pole otherwise it's illegal & I will eat red snapper but I distrust fish in the stores -- it doesn't look fresh to me.

That's a fair enough reason :-) If anything your story has made you more selectively "posh" with your fish ;-)

Perhaps it's a good thing because almonds seem to be high on sals which means it'll make me itch. Dates are also high on sals, but it might be worth it to see if I can tolerate just one date a day, because they contain soooo many vitamins!

You are so right, family and friends don't want to hear about it.. it isn't something that excites them haha :-) WHenever I talk to my husband about this I see a look on his face: Oh no, here she goes! I don't get it, because he should be thrilled that we at last know what the deal is. We used to think that we couldn't have children without extreme measures and now that has disappeared :-)

I can't stop stressing how glad and happy I am to have people to talk to about this. I am trying to be active with other people's topics but I don't think I'm good at solving problems as well as I am in finding them! I just wish we live closer and could meat regularly like IrishHeart pointed.

Cougie what a sweet post!

I also can't spell when I'm glutened :-O Actually I noticed that I tend to become slightly dyslexic when I'm foggy from gluten, too! It's not weird at all :-) Well, maybe we're all weird which makes this place even more interesting! Sals (salicylates) are found in a lot of natural foods like fruits and veggies, as well as processed foods. They're some sortof immunity hormones. Here is a page on sals: Open Original Shared Link

Thinking you have MS is a terrible thing, I can imagine how relieved you were when you found out it wasn't your case :-)

I call that "thyroid brain" or ai brain.

Thyroid supplaments helped within days.

Unfortunately it still comes back from time to time...

T3/t4 but at second thought I did start a ton of vitamins at the same time. Which I then stopped because I was an idiot.

:lol::lol: Aww, I so relate to this. Or when you go upstairs only to realize you've forgotten what you went up there for. Then halfway down the steps you remember, go back up and get it, but then drop it 5 times before you actually are able to pick it up.

My father (who might have gluten problems but is in denial) is famous for this. At one point he called a pitcher a "clear pourer."

In the study linked above, the little girl switched to a gluten free diet and gained enough weight that that fat pad was replenished and surgery was not needed.   Here's the full article link... Hello, @Jordan Carlson, So glad you're feeling better.   Tecta is a proton pump inhibitor.  PPI's also interfere with the production of the intrinsic factor needed to absorb Vitamin B12.  Increasing the amount of B12 you supplement has helped overcome the lack of intrinsic factor needed to absorb B12. Proton pump inhibitors also reduce the production of digestive juices (stomach acids).  This results in foods not being digested thoroughly.  If foods are not digested sufficiently, the vitamins and other nutrients aren't released from the food, and the body cannot absorb them.  This sets up a vicious cycle. Acid reflux and Gerd are actually symptoms of producing too little stomach acid.  Insufficient stomach acid production is seen with Thiamine and Niacin deficiencies.  PPI's like Tecta also block the transporters that pull Thiamine into cells, preventing absorption of thiamine.  Other symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are difficulty swallowing, gagging, problems with food texture, dysphagia. Other symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are symptoms of ADHD and anxiety.  Vyvanse also blocks thiamine transporters contributing further to Thiamine deficiency.  Pristiq has been shown to work better if thiamine is supplemented at the same time because thiamine is needed to make serotonin.  Doctors don't recognize anxiety and depression and adult onset ADHD as early symptoms of Thiamine deficiency. Stomach acid is needed to digest Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in fruits and vegetables.  Ascorbic acid left undigested can cause intestinal upsets, anxiety, and heart palpitations.   Yes, a child can be born with nutritional deficiencies if the parents were deficient.  Parents who are thiamine deficient have offspring with fewer thiamine transporters on cell surfaces, making thiamine deficiency easier to develop in the children.  A person can struggle along for years with subclinical vitamin deficiencies.  Been here, done this.  Please consider supplementing with Thiamine in the form TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) which helps immensely with dysphagia and neurological symptoms like anxiety, depression, and ADHD symptoms.  Benfotiamine helps with improving intestinal health.  A B Complex and NeuroMag (a magnesium supplement), and Vitamin D are needed also.
    • knitty kitty
@pothosqueen, Welcome to the tribe! You'll want to get checked for nutritional deficiencies and start on supplementation of B vitamins, especially Thiamine Vitamin B 1.   There's some scientific evidence that the fat pad that buffers the aorta which disappears in SMA is caused by deficiency in Thiamine.   In Thiamine deficiency, the body burns its stored fat as a source of fuel.  That fat pad between the aorta and digestive system gets used as fuel, too. Ask for an Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test to look for thiamine deficiency.  Correction of thiamine deficiency can help restore that fat pad.   Best wishes for your recovery!   Interesting Reading: Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome in a 6-Year-Old Girl with Final Diagnosis of Celiac Disease https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31089433/#:~:text=Affiliations,tissue and results in SMAS.
    • trents
Wow! You're pretty young to have a diagnosis of SMA syndrome. But youth also has its advantages when it comes to healing, without a doubt. You might be surprised to find out how your health improves and how much better you feel once you eliminate gluten from your diet. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that, when gluten is consumed, triggers an attack on the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestines where all our nutrition is absorbed. It is made up of billions of tiny finger-like projections that create a tremendous surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the person with celiac disease, unchecked gluten consumption generates inflammation that wears down these fingers and, over time, greatly reduces the nutrient absorbing efficiency of the small bowel lining. This can generate a whole host of other nutrient deficiency related medical problems. We also now know that the autoimmune reaction to gluten is not necessarily limited to the lining of the small bowel such that celiac disease can damage other body systems and organs such as the liver and the joints and cause neurological problems.  It can take around two years for the villous lining to completely heal but most people start feeling better well before then. It's also important to realize that celiac disease can cause intolerance to some other foods whose protein structures are similar to gluten. Chief among them are dairy and oats but also eggs, corn and soy. Just keep that in mind.
