Need To Vent, Having A Hard Time

I was doing fine with all the gluten filled goodies people bring into work. But this week it is really bothering me. It is not that there are more goodies this week than any other week but I am bothered by it more. I want to literally scream to my co-workers stop talking about food all the time and the next time to have a pizza party. Today I wanted to throw the chocolate cake in the trash that was sitting in the kitchen. Then today they are arranging two teams for a contest on Monday, and the winner gets pizza.

I am not sure why it is bothering me so much this week. Maybe it is finally hitting me that my whole life and way of eating has changed (I was diagnosed in late February 2012). Or this week after still having problems I cut out caesin, lactose, soy, etc (will be adding those back in later to see what may be also causing problems) and I am only eating naturally gluten free foods (so I can't have gluten free brownie).

Thanks for listening. I just needed to vent to people who understand.

Awwww, I'm so sorry. We've all been there and it is really tough. It does get easier over time but this feeling has reared its ugly on me at totally unexpected times...I was reading a novel about a cooking competition and I almost couldn't finish it!

Anyway, come and vent here. You are among friends. :)

I'm sorry. It sucks.

I know you're trying not to, but if you could have a gluten-free brownie I'm sure it would help. Goodness, if I didn't have my crutches when going gluten-free my head would have popped!

Would a King Arthur flour mix / cocoa brownie fit your diet right now?

I feel a little over-consumed by the diet if that makes sense... seems my life is revolving around it right now. I'm hoping it just feels like the new normal after awhile. They say eventually the gluten filled foods won't appeal at all - wonder when that will happen.

Sorry....but if you get into it and have a major reaction you'll start creeping around it like its the embodiment of The Plague.

I'd get DH from it - so I wore my gluten like a banner.

Physical disfigurement goes a long way. But so does a debilitating stomach ache, urgent D when there's no bathroom, or a crushing migraine that leaves you unable to function in public.

So yeah - unfortunately gluten will stop looking good once you make an association with pain. Probably :).

I can relate!

I have trouble even reading the magazines I have subscriptions to. They're filled with recipes I can't eat, and photos of the most yummy looking foods! Even watching tv in the evening, with all of the food commercials gets to me sometimes.

I can just imagine how hard it would be to have the offending item right there, where you can smell it! :o

Ditto THIS! After my 1st glutening....I never craved another thing in the cafeteria.. (I have DH and its so painful and terribly annoying while healing).

You will get to a point you stop craving things....in the meantime though, buy yourself some Chebe Pizza Crust Mix. This was a craving lifesaver for me...I can now make pizza anytime I want it at home, and its less than $5 a pizza! If I start feeling bad about not being able to have things (like today everyone in my department went out to eat, and I didn't even though I wanted to because the place was a really unsafe place for me to eat, or even drink (brewery))...so tonight I am making pizza!!!

And buy a bag of brownie mix too...I have 2 at home...and although I don't eat them, it makes me feel better I have that choice if I wanted to.

About feeling bad...make sure you stop eating oats, even if they are gluten free. That was a major problem for me!

I have been having a lot of cravings lately too! I haven't been gluten free very long but lately everything I shouldn't have, looks fantastic. I mistakenly was glutened a couple weeks ago and immediately my DH spot that wasn't healed all the way broke out again. UGH! Can you have some good quality dark chocolate? I'm avoiding soy but do well with small amounts of good chocolate (thank goodness!!) I found a decent gluten free pizza crust mix and I get my fix with that and this "fake" cheese called Daiya. I'm still perfecting that one but it helps.

Venting is good! Way better than taking off someone's head!

Sometimes out of the blue we all get food deprived or feel food deprived & we react by sadness or anger.. The gluten-free diet is not just a diet but a life style change forever..Not convienent either..

Food deprivation is REAL .. We all need to keep a gluten-free goodie bag in our cars, office, pocket, purse at all times..

When you know events happen at work with sweets, pizza ect.. make something or buy gluten-free & take it to work .so you too have a treat.....Honestly there is very little that can't be made gluten-free these days...

There are allergy free baking sites that have great recipes & bakers/vendors who carry allergy free goodies, no dairy, soy, corn & so on..

Being new to the gluten-free lifestyle can be over-whelming, that is why I tell my gluten-free friends to start out with the natural things they know is gluten-free..ie: naked meats, fish, veggies, & fruits.. After your sure of those then move on to more items.. ANd always learn to be a label reader as some companies change their ingredient list often..to save money..

Get the list of companies that clearly label gluten-free...its a big help for newbies...when in doubt do without until you find out for sure it is gluten-free...when your in a hurry just ask , we can help...

So vent away, anytime we all have been there....

      This happened to me as well. What’s weirder is that within a couple hours of taking paxlovid it subsided. I thought maybe I got glutened but after reading your post not so sure.

      Hi Tiffany. Thank you for writing your dituation and  circumstancesin such detail and so well writte, too. I particularly noticed what you wrote about brain for and feeling like your brain is swelling and I know from my own experiences that's how it feel and your brain really does swell and you get migraines.    Way back when I was in my 20s I read a book by 2 MD allergist and they described their patient who came in complaining that her brain, inside her cranium, was swelling  and it happened when she smelled a certain chemical she used in her home. She kept coming back and insisting her brain actually swelled in her head. The Drs couldn't explain this problem so they, with her permission, performed an operation where they made a small opening through her cranium, exposed her to the chemical then watched as she brain did swell into the opening. The DRs were amazed but then were able to advise her to avoid chemicals that made her brain swell. I remember that because I occasionally had brain fog then but it was not a serious problem. I also realized that I was becoming more sensitive to chemicals I used in my work in medical laboratories. By my mid forties the brain fog and chemicals forced me to leave my  profession and move to a rural area with little pollution. I did not have migraines. I was told a little later that I had a more porous blood brain barrier than other people. Chemicals in the air would go up into my sinused and leak through the blood brain barrier into my brain. We have 2 arteries  in our neck that carry blood with the nutrients and oxygen into the brain. To remove the fluids and used blood from the brain there are only capillaries and no large veins to carry it away so all those fluids ooze out much more slowly than they came in and since the small capillaries can't take care of extra fluid it results in swelling in the face, especially around the eyes. My blood flow into my brain is different from most other people as I have an arterial ischema, adefectiveartery on one side.   I have to go forward about 20 or more years when I learned that I had glaucoma, an eye problem that causes blindness and more years until I learned I had celiac disease.  The eye Dr described my glaucoma as a very slow loss of vision that I wouldn't  notice until had noticeable loss of sight.  I could have my eye pressure checked regularly or it would be best to have the cataracts removed from both eyes. I kept putting off the surgery then just overnight lost most of the vision in my left eye. I thought at the I had been exposed to some chemical and found out a little later the person who livedbehind me was using some chemicals to build kayaks in a shed behind my house. I did not realize the signifance  of this until I started having appointments with a Dr. in a new building. New buildings give me brain fog, loss of balance and other problems I know about this time I experienced visual disturbances very similar to those experienced by people with migraines. I looked further online and read that people with glaucoma can suffer rapid loss of sight if they have silent migraines (no headache). The remedy for migraines is to identify and avoid the triggers. I already know most of my triggers - aromatic chemicals, some cleaning materials, gasoline and exhaust and mold toxins. I am very careful about using cleaning agents using mostly borax and baking powder. Anything that has any fragrance or smell I avoid. There is one brand of dishwashing detergent that I can use and several brands of  scouring powder. I hope you find some of this helpful and useful. I have not seen any evidence that Celiac Disease is involved with migraines or glaucoma. Please come back if you have questions or if what I wrote doesn't make senseto you. We sometimes haveto learn by experience and finding out why we have some problems. Take care.       The report did not mention migraines.

      Hi Jmartes71 That is so much like my story! You probably know where Laytonville is and that's where I was living just before my 60th birthday when the new Dr. suggested I could have Celiacs. I didn't go on a gluten challange diet before having the Celiac panel blood test drawn. The results came back as equivical as one antibody level was very high but another, tissue transaminasewas normal. Itdid show I was  allergic to cows milk and I think hot peppers. I immediately went gluten free but did not go in for an endoscopy. I found an online lab online that would do the test to show if I had a main celiac gene (enterolab.com). The report came back that I had inherited a main celiac gene, DQ8, from one parent and a D!6 from the other parent. That combination is knows to sym[tons of celiac worse than just inheriting one main celiac gene. With my version of celiac disease I was mostly constipated but after going gluten-free I would have diarrhea the few times I was glutened either by cross contamination or eating some food containing gluten. I have stayed gluten-free for almost 20 years now and knew within a few days that it was right for me although my recovery has been slow.   When I go to see a  medical provide and tell them I have celiacs they don't believe me. The same when I tell them that I carry a main celiac gene, the DQ8. It is only when I tell them that I get diarrhea after eating gluten that they realize that I might have celiac disease. Then they will order th Vitamin B12 and D3 that I need to monitor as my B12 levels can go down very fast if I'm not taking enough of it. Medical providers haven't been much help in my recovery. They are not well trained in this problem. I really hope this helps ypu. Take care.
