Any Good Gluten-free Restaurants In Ottawa?

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone knows of restaurants in the Ottawa (Canada) region that actually cater to people with celiac disease (or other food allergies). I go out to eat often, but I always have to pick out stuff on the menu that I can eat (this can be a challenge as I do not eat gluten OR dairy). I've heard of restaurants that actually have a gluten-free menu or that cook their own gluten-free pasta or pizza, etc...but I've never known any restaurants like this. I know it's a long-shot..but anyone around the Ottawa region that knows?

Thanks!

I just ate at So Good Restaurant on Somerset - TONS of gluten free items. You tell the Owner Peter that you can't eat gluten and he'll hook you up with fantastic service. Will even give you a fortune cookie and tell you not to eat it :)

check it out at Open Original Shared Link

Also, Outback Steakhouse has a gluten free menu where everyting is available G.F. (save a few sauces).

Also check out Mongolian Village (Olgilvie Road or Bells Corners)

Of course, The Table and the Green Door are awesome vegetarian/vegan restaurants with the best quality g.f. food you'll find anywhere.

Govinda's Hari Krishna restaurant on Somerset is likely gluten free (it's vegan).

La Dolce Vita on Preston serves gluten free pizza.

So that gives you a good start.... begin with the Green Door... my FAVE :)

Ha! Thanks for your post. I am a little late replying... it's funny, I don't come on there boards often, and this particular post hadn't been answered for ages..and I just had a feeling that someone replied to my post! Great...thanks for some suggestions. I called La Dolce Vita one weekend, and alas...they were out of gluten-free pizza!! I ended up finding another place, Bella Vista Restaurant (I think it's called?) on Alta Vista that serves delicious gluten-free pizza and fettucine, too. However, I have a love/hate relationship with dairy. I'm 100% positive that it makes me sick and itchy..but i do eat it from time to time. I've never been to Mongolian Village, but am closer to Ogilvie Rd. so maybe will check that out. I used to go to Oh So Good waaay before i started eating gluten free and haven't been back there in years, so maybe i will have to try it out again... wondering if they can do any "dairy-free" versions of anything?? I do go to Green Door from time to time, seeing as my bf is veggie...very tasty, yes!

Thanks again

I noticed eating gluten-free or CGF foods have higher sugar and sodium some. No added sugar protein bars I found better with plant fiber. I wanted to know what are you go to besides whole fruits/veggies that you find are healthy for you where you can feel eating normal without hurting yourself or health. I was looking into subscription based like Thrift to see if there is something that is healthier CGF that can make me feel normal. Thanks

Thankyou because I met up with K B with well known bay area hospital once and she said she knows I don't like to take meds, I said thats incorrect, I have issues.Thats the one that said I was deemed " unruly " when she admitted I was celiac when I asked why am I going through this.

Cristiana, that sounds like a great approach and I will be looking forward to the results. I am in the same boat as you. I don't experience overt symptoms with minor, cross contamination level exposures so I sometimes will indulge in those "processed on equipment that also processes wheat . . ." or items that don't specifically claim to be gluten free but do not list gluten containing grains in their ingredient list. But I always wonder if I am still experiencing sub acute inflammatory reactions. I haven't had any celiac antibody blood work done since my diagnosis almost 25 years ago so I don't really have any data to go by.

I've been reflecting on this further. The lowest TTG I've ever managed was 4.5 (normal lab reading under 10).  Since then it has gone up to 10.   I am not happy with that.  I can only explain this by the fact that I am eating out more these days and that's where I'm being 'glutened', but such small amounts that I only occasionally react. I know some of it is also to do with eating products labelled 'may contain gluten' by mistake - which in the UK means it probably does! It stands to reason that as I am a coeliac any trace of gluten will cause a response in the gut.  My villi are healed and look healthy, but those lymphocytes are present because of the occasional trace amounts of gluten sneaking into my diet.   I am going to try not to eat out now until my next blood test in the autumn and read labels properly to avoid the may contain gluten products, and will then report back to see if it has helped!
