Hi Guys!

It really happened, we are going to have a baby! :D I'm so excited! And still a little in shock! I just went to the doctor last week.....they said I am definatly pregnant and the baby is due June 5th!

So far everything has been pretty good...the only thing I'm craving is cranberry juice (drinking a whole jug every day) and luckily that's gluten free! My only problem has been c! I get c really bad when I'm glutened and I have read that the elevated progesterine in your body when you are pregnant also gives you c......I don't know if it is gluten or pregnancy but I've got it bad! All the pregnancy advice I have read says to eat lots of whole grains to prevent this (obviously that's out) and to drink lots of fluids (considering the cranberry juice I've got that covered) but still no relief.....does anybody have any suggestions to prevent c (in a gluten-free way) while your pregnant?

Thanks guys!

A very happy and pregnant

Christine

I can't help you with the c problem since mine is a chronic "d" problem, but I just wanted to congratulate you on your wonderful news!!!! I am very happy for you!

Is this your first?

Dilute your Juice with some water. Juice is not great at easing C. The best drink for that is water. Whole grains are available in Brown rice rather than white rice. Amaranth snaps by Nu-world foods has whole grains. kinnikinnick sells some great breads that contain whole grains. One is the flax seed bread and that'll help with the C.

Buy some flax meal and sprinkle it on your cereal, too. Your dr can prescribe you some medicine to help out. You want to avoid the constipation as best you can. Pregnancy lasts a long time and as the weight increases, the constipation lingers, the pressure doubles and you could end up with painful hemmeroids. Not fun during the ninth month.

Congratulations.

Congratulations!

I second the flax seed or meal option - you can add flax meal to your baked goods, hot cereal, or smoothies. You can also try taking a magnesium supplement. (Not a massive dose, just something that, taken a few times a day, gives you your RDA.)

cgilsing Enthusiast

Thank you all for your suggestions! It is my first baby so I'm pretty new at all of this! I will definately try the flax seed meal (I can buy that at our grocery store) and I was going to order some of my kinnikinnick staples today anyway so I will look into ordering some of their whole grain breads too! I will also talk to my doctor about maybe putting me on a prenatal vitamin that will supplement my magnesium.

Thanks again everybody! I can always count on you guys for help!

Congratulations!! You must be sooo excited! I am due Oct 15th, but because of problems with my last labor my doc is inducing me on the 3rd. As far as the big C goes, I had it really bad a few weeks ago and what really worked for me was to eat alot of grapes. Don't ask me why, but it worked. If you get really bad you can always ask your doc for some colace, although I am not sure if its gluten-free.

Cheers!

Congratulations! YOU must be excited! You only have a few more days to go! Is this your first? You have to let us know how everything goes! I will try the grapes! And what is colace? Is it safe to use while you are pregnant?

Hey there .. I'm new to all this and also was suffering from "c". I found relief in by eating fruits and vegatables that contained natural digestive enzymes, namely papaya, mango, avocado, pineapple, bananas and alfafa sprouts. When that fails, I eat some gluten free bread dipped in extra virgin olive oil and Italian spices. Be careful though, only try a little at a time, anything new can make you cramp up. marcia

You might want to talk with your Dr. about your prenatal vitamin that has a stool softener. I took Prenate GT but that's been a couple of years ago and I'm not sure if it's gluten-free. The vitamin also had a wonderful coating on the pill to help minimize tummy upset. I think there are a couple other vitamins on the market by Prenate now. I didn't have any problems with c while I was expecting. It wasn't unitl after my dd was born that I realized that I was getting help from my vitamin! Because it isn't a laxative you still can use all your flax, fruits and veggies as the fiber. I often give my dd flax gel or olive oil. My dd Dr. said last week that watermelon and blueberries are wonderful for c. :D From our exp. banans are not....

Congratulations!!!!!

Congrats....never been pregnant myself. Just wondering how long it took you to get Preggo. I have PCOS and celiac....will likely be difficult to get preg since I only menstruate when given drugs, but am hoping that going gluten-free will change alot of that. I went on a protein diet 5 years ago and that has been the only time in my life that I was actually getting my period (about every 2 months)....I guess it was the lack of gluten that did it and I didn't even know it at the time.

Anyone else have PCOS and celiac???

Congratulations!! Please keep us updated along the way. I've been married a year, hopefully with children in the future (but not near future) and I enjoy hearing everyone's good news! :)

Kasey's mom - I will DEFINATELY be asking about the prenatal vitamins! With everything else to worry about (tiredness, queeziness, moodswings) c is one I could do without! Luckily fresh fruits are something that is tasting good to me....I've been eating a lot of pinapple as a snack and I've heard that too about bananas so I will stay away from that!

Skarlet - We were also really worried about my fertility...I have had a lot of cyst and endometriosis problems and in the past doctors have point blank told me that my fertility was in danger. Before we started trying I was talking with my friend, Amber, about my fears. She said then "Oh, after all this worrying you'll get pregnant the first month, just watch!" Sure enough we were pregnant the first month!! I called Amber to tell her and all I had to say was "You were right!" and she screamed "OH MY GOD! Your Pregnant!" on the other end! Everyone is different, but don't let your fears overtake your thoughts! The Lord creates little miracles every day! Good luck!

What always eases c for me is... this is a little weird BUT... a hot beverage and chocolate. :) Hey, it is at least a yummy fix!! :) Don't ask me why, but the mix of hot and chocolate just does it for me. Coffee is my drink of choice ~ so maybe it has something to do with the caffeine??? I'm not sure ~ but it works!!! :)

Congrats on your baby news!!! I'm looking forward to the Grandma years myself!

With one son premed and the other one in his first year of college... it may be a while!

Congratulations!!!! :D

I know exactly how you feel. I just found out a few weeks ago that I am pregnant too! :)

Good luck to you. I hope it is a wonderful pregnancy. I am currently battling the "c" thing as well  But my main issue is still the morning (or all day) sickness.

I'm truly happy for you! :P -Julie

Congrats!!

Fruits are a good way to counteract the c. I use dried apricots, raisins, canned fruit cocktail, and a really tried and true one for me is canned pears. Apple juice should help too. Or sometimes I resort to citruscel. That was recommended to me by my GI.

Thank you everybody for your responses! I have been trying some of the suggestions and my situation is improving :D Thank God!

Julie - I really hope your morning sickness gets better! I haven't had it too bad yet...but I have noticed that eating something small every couple of hours instead of big meals seems to keep the queeziness at bay! OH and I don't know how good soup is sounding to you, but I found a couple of campbell's soups that are gluten free and I have been really liking them for a mid-afternoon snack....the campbells select gold label tomato soup (it comes in a box instead of a can) I've been eating it for something small to tide me over until dinner....well enough of me rambling on! Soup might not sound good at all to you! :P Thanks again to everybody for your suggestions!

Congratulations! I'm also pregnant and just a few days behind you, Christine. I haven't had my first appt. yet (it's Oct. 25...can't wait!) but my calculations put my due date around June 9. It happened on our second try and I still can't believe it. We're telling the family in the next couple of weeks (my parents when we see them for my mom's b.day on Sat. and my husband's entire family the following weekend when we're together).

Funny you should mention "C" because I had horrible problems the week and a half before I found out I was pg. It was really bad. I ended up having to take Milk of Magnesia (which, according to my research is safe in pg and gluten-free, but I took it without asking my doc because I was so desperate; I don't think its good to use it a lot though). I needed some relief. I think it was one of my first pregnancy symptoms because there was NO reason for it (hadn't eaten out so no possible gluten; ate nothing unusual)

I've been eating lots of beans, salad, spinach and other foods with fiber since to avoid the problem again, plus drinking more water. I've actually been normal since a day after my positive HPT. I think breakfast is the hardest meal to get fiber for Celiacs since most of our cereal is unfortified. However, Van's WF/gluten-free waffles have a decent amount of fiber (and are awesome), so I eat those a couple times per week.

Well, best wishes for a happy and healthy nine months! (and cross your fingers that I have one too, please) :)

Hi,

I'm excited for you. I've enjoyed reading all your responses since I'm pregnant too (due April 17) and have been having the same problem. I tried some fiber chewables, but they gave me gas so bad I couldn't stand it!! I'll be trying all the things you are. Glad they are working for you! :)

Guest imsohungry

Gosh, Congrats to everyone who is pregnant! :)

I'm reading this thread again...I've been battling the big "C" all week; I took Milk of Mag. last week with no results. So, I'm forced to try a new approach.

DRIED PRUNES! :wacko::P

I eat seven bite-size a day...I have to say, I'm seeing progress :D

I bought prune juice too, but I'm having a really hard time drinking it!

You guys should have seen me at the check-out counter with nothing but a bag of prunes, a gallon of prune juice, metamucil, and a bottle of Milk of Mag. HA! :P

Pregnant, nauseous, constipated, and happy

-Julie ;)

Congratulations to everyone who is pregnant! There really are a lot of us right now! Love must be in the air!

Anya - We really are close together! My first doc appt. is also on October 25! You will have to let me know how it goes! I'm really excited about it! I don't really know what I'm expecting to happen.....but I'm anxious all the same!

For me the C was the worst right when I was finding out I was pregnant. THings have improved some since then (I'm not completly miserable), but I'm still going to talk to the doctor about it. From what I have heard most pre-natal vitamins have a stool softener in them, and I am hoping to get some of those! I have also tried prune juice for fiber (and it really helps!) but at this point just the thought of it is making me gag! I heard a cute quote from none other than Dolly Pardon (sp?) in regards to morning sickness though...."If you want the rainbow you have to put up with the rain" now I just think of that when I'm running for the bathroom!

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @JudyLou! There are a couple of things you might consider to help you in your decision that would not require you to do a gluten challenge. The first, that is if you have not had this test run already, is to request a "total IGA" test to be run. One of the reasons that celiac blood antibody tests can be negative, apart from not having celiac disease, that is, is because of IGA deficiency. If a person is IGA deficient, they will not respond accurately to the celiac disease blood antibody tests (such as the commonly run TTG-IGA). The total IGA test is designed to check for IGA deficiency. The total IGA test is not a celiac antibody test so I wouldn't think that a gluten challenge is necessary. The second is to have genetic testing done to determine if you have the genetic potential to develop celiac disease. About 30-40% of  the general population have the genetic potential but only about 1% actually develop celiac disease. So, genetic testing cannot be used to diagnose celiac disease but it can be used to rule it out. Those who don't have the genetic potential but still have reaction to gluten would not be diagnosed with celiac disease but with NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity).  Another possibility is that you do have celiac disease but are in remission. We do see this but often it doesn't last.

Hi there, I’m debating whether to consider a gluten challenge and I’m hoping someone here can help with that decision (so far, none of the doctors have been helpful). I have a history of breaking out in a horrible, burning/itchy somewhat blistering rash about every 8 years. This started when I was in my early 30’s and at that point it started at the ankles and went about to my knees. Every time I had the rash it would cover more of my body, so my arms and part of my torso were impacted as well, and it was always symmetrical. First I was told it was an allergic reaction to a bug bite. Next I was told it was eczema (after a biopsy of the lesion - not the skin near the lesion) and given a steroid injection (didn’t help). I took myself off of gluten about 3 weeks before seeing an allergist, just to see if it would help (it didn’t in that time period). He thought the rash looked like dermatitis herpetiformis and told me to eat some bread the night before my blood tests, which I did, and the tests came back negative. I’ve since learned from this forum that I needed to be eating gluten daily for at least a month in order to get an accurate test result. I’m grateful to the allergist as he found that 5 mg of doxepin daily will eliminate the rash within about 10 days (previously it lasted for months whether I was eating gluten or not). I have been gluten free for about 25 years as a precaution and recommendation from my doctor, and the pattern of breaking out every 8 years or so remains the same except once I broke out after just one year (was not glutened as far as I know), and now it’s been over 9 years. What’s confusing to me, is that there have been 3 times in the past 2 years when I’ve accidentally eaten gluten, and I haven’t had any reaction at all. Once someone made pancakes (they said they were gluten-free, they were not) and I ate several. I need to decide whether to do a gluten challenge and get another blood test. If I do, are these tests really accurate? I’m also concerned that I could damage my gut in that process if I do have celiac disease. My brother and cousin both had lymphoma so that’s a concern regarding a challenge as well, though there is a lot of cancer in various forms in my family so there may be no gluten connection there. Sorry for the ramble, I’m just doubting the need to remain gluten free if I don’t have any reaction to eating it and haven’t had a positive test (other than testing positive for one of the genes, though it sounds like that’s pretty common). I’d appreciate any thoughts or advice!

Hello, just popped in my head to ask this question about medications and celiac? I have always had refurse reaction to meds since I can remember  of what little meds my body is able to tolerate. I was taking gabapentin 300mg for a week,  in past I believe 150? Any ways it amps me up not able to sleep, though very tired. However I did notice it helped with my bloating sibo belly.I hate that my body is that sensitive and medical doesn't seem to take seriously. Im STILL healing with my skin, eye, and now ms or meningioma ( will know in April  which)and dealing with this limbo nightmare. I did write my name, address ect on the reclamation but im not tech savvy and not sure if went through properly. I called my city representative in Stanislaus County and asked if theres a physical paper i can sign for proclamation for celiac and she had no clue about what I was saying, so I just said I'll go back on website.
    • Scott Adams
I'm not saying that some celiacs won't need it, but it should be done under a doctor's supervision because it can cause lots of problems in some people.
    • Jmartes71
I also noticed I get debilitating migraines when I smell gluten, wheat and its not taken seriously when it affects one in every way.Im still begging to properly be heard.I also noticed tolerance level is down the drain with age and life changes. I have been told by incompetent medical that im not celiac or that sensitive. Diagnosed in 1994 by gi biopsy gluten-free ever since along with other lovely food allergies. Prayers
