  1. I had an entirely different read on the title of the thread... I was thinking of the gluten-free things I bought that I (cheap as I am) threw out because they were GROSS! I went gluten-free as an experiment, it was spring, I decided to try the gluten-free diet for Lent. What made it REALLY amusing was the article in the paper right about the...
  2. calm, don't seek insult where it was not intended.... I believe that what bklnceliac meant was that it was not a gluten intolerence reaction, but an allergic reaction. In this case truly looking like anaphalaxis (swollen throat) which would NOT occur with an intolerence. so bkln was recommending that things other than gluten be considered. Thus ...
  3. go have some scallops with tomato lime garlic for me! I recently moved 5 hours away from my old house. went to the bonefish site, entered the new zip code, closest site was the one 1 mile from my old house. I'll have to use the leftover bonefish gift certificate at outback!
  4. My mom is cool. She checked everything and fed me safely (she cooks a lot of whole foods anyway). But I still brought my own snacks, cereal, and such. When I went to visit the SIL (Italian), I went to the store and got frozen Amy's and ate that at the table with everyone else while they ate whatever. They may think I was weird, but I stayed healthy....
  5. but only if you check: I asked at a restaurant not too long ago and they floured the pan they used to form the polenta
  6. I feed mine Nutro indoor, it's at Petsmart or Petco. I don't see gluten ingredients, but could be hiding under natural flavor.
  7. well. He doesn't have it, does he?? I've had glutenings that woke me up at night, days when I couldn't move. For 3 YEARS before dx, I felt like I'd been gut kicked all the time, avoided all use of stomach muscles. Worse pain than when I had the swollen spleen from mono.
  8. My husband and I will be chaperoning a high school lock in. Well, it won't be boring!
  9. With the new labeling laws in the US, any _wheat_ is required to be listed. HOWEVER, rye, barley, and oat are _not_ required by law to be listed . Unilever and Kraft WILL list rye, barley or oat, because they have chosen to give us the information we need (good manufacturer! ). Other manufacturers will not necessarily list these. so, if the "natural...
  10. if it has barley malt, that would fit my definition of "really weird" Apple cider is supposed to be apples. WHY do these people have to add stuff where it doesn't belong? (rant over)
  11. I have a request: any one know how to adjust a lasagne recipe for uncooked noodles? I've seen it done, but there are some adjustments I don't know. My (italian) husband uses all sorts of colorful language when he has to work with rice lasagne noodles.
  12. Sara -- take some pro-biotics while you take your anti-biotics. That will help with the candida. I used to have frequesnt sinus trouble before my sinus surgery and before going gluten-free. I NEVER take antibiotics without also tacking acidopholus to keep the good intestinal stuff going while we kill off the evil biotics .
  13. Cider is made from apples (fermented apple juice). It is gluten-free unless they do something REALLY weird. I've had cider on tap in several pubs and not had a problem, although Guhlia has a point about possible cross contamination.
  14. But it's supposed to be fun .... I had pain from intercourse for the 6 years I was trying to get diagnosed. Of course, I pretty much just ached from the bottom of the rib-cage to the pelvis for the entire six years so it's no wonder. The pain with intercourse went away after my intestines healed from the gluten-free diet, but it takes a while. Still...
  15. I actually spent several weeks just doing the research before I started the diet... I was not ready to commit. BTW, My biopsy was negative, but he only took from one spot. Not an adequate sampling rate when you consider how much small intestine there is and that not all of it will be damaged. However, my results on the diet were undeniable. ...

    ARCHIVED Help!

I think some sites talk about the increase in cancer and auto-immune diseases to either make celiac seem more important to the ignorant who think it's just like a minimal lactose intolerance (Oh, so you get a little gas, who cares!) or to make newbies take the gluten-free diet seriously or to help health care professionals and us to bear in mind that the...
  17. Take a deep breath. Let it out. OK. You will get the hang of this but it will take awhile. The better you are at knowing the less you have to rely on others, and those who don't have celiac will probably never completely get it (with the possible exceptions of parents and spouses (I'm really not holding out hope for my spouse, but some on here seem really...
  18. I also eat Amy's Pizza, and sometimes I put Hormel pepperoni on it. Makes it a bit more palatable. It's really about on a par with ball field pizza -- and we all know how good that isnt'. I've got to try one of the recipes for pizza crust from this board. The extra price and lower quality of the pre-fab gluten-free stuff is starting to kill me. So...
  19. Very few (but some) have said they react by touching gluten. The problem for many is that what is on the hands will end up in the mouth. Also, with flour, the problem is airborne. If the flour gets in your nose (which it will if you breathe it in), the natural design of the nasal membranes to to self clean by producing mucus which normally goes straight...
  20. It's possible that you have the good first month from radically cutting down on gluten, and now your body is saying I WANT NO GLUTEN, NONE AT ALL! while all this time you've been still getting some. KBTOYSNI is right, you need to review EVERYTHING you're eating for all the hidden gluten sources, cross contamination possibilites, etc and get rid of...
  21. A word to the wise, if you spill the xanthum gum, get as much up dry as possible. it's nasty slimy when wet. (you don't really want to know.....)
  22. I've eaten at 5 guys with no problem -- except my reaction to all that FAT
  23. At least they knew you weren't faking it!
  24. because she carried on (smuggled) a forbidden item (matches) and then lit them (also forbidden). BTW, I've been on flights with a gassy person.... Wow that's a confined space, you can't move away, and the air circulation isn't good.
  25. Ask where they keep their own baker's gluten-free stuff. One whole foods I went to kept it in a freezer in the freezer section. One kept moving it .. I think it was in a different place each time I went .... the one I go to now has them (thawed) on a rack in the bakery section, but they happily get me a frozen whatever from the back when I ask. They...
