  1. Hubby and I had: Amish turkey breast (My mother wanted to know if it had a bonnet, at $3 a pound it ought to have!) Green beans (none of that icky casserole stuff) Sweet potato casserole gluten-free dressing (Ooops, cooked it too long and it kinda dried out too much, but gravy helped) Gravy (cornstarch) Pumpkin pie danger: glutenfull rolls for...
  2. Congratulations! See, it CAN be done... (I make a pretty mean sweet potato casserole myself!) I also made a pumpkin pie with the Gillian frozen pie crust. Pretty good.
  3. the health valley rice bran crackers are not unlike graham crackers. They're just a tad sweet.

    ARCHIVED Red Lobster

It will probably depend on your local restaurant. The corporate "help" people were so rude when I asked for information that I swore to never go back. But then, since going gluten-free, I've lived near a Bonefish (gluten-free menu!!) and now another seafood place that has gluten-free menu (Mitchell's).
  5. well, if you were looking at it from a Sugar Busters/Atkins/bad carb point of view; I would think that corn starch would be a "bad" option compared to the "healthy whole wheat" option. Of course, that opinion doesn't really apply to us... Some of the flours like amaranth, Quinoa, and teff would be "healthy" gluten-free options. I just don't know...
  6. If you're in the Virginia suburbs of DC there are several Wegmann's grocery stores that have great gluten-free sections. DC also has Whole Foods and Trader Joes, both of which are good grocery stores for gluten-free. I lived in the burbs when I was there, but someone from the city may be able to guide you to some in the city places.
  7. I've eaten tons of Amy's (used to take it for lunch everyday). Mexican casserole is my favorite, shepherds pie stinks. I have not had any problems, it may be I'm not quite as sensitive to traces. It's still a fall back staple ofr me. I keep a few in my freezer for those nights I need to eat but can't bring myself to cook.
  8. I believe natural flavor can hide things like malt. Give me those unnatural flavors!
  9. yeah, I'm betting that woodchuck cider would substitue nicely for the beer...
  10. I was taking nexium, backed off to the lower dosage in Prilosec OTC (I had taken Prilosec when it was prescription). Prilosec OTC is a tablet, not a capsule, and lists some generic starch as an ingredient and I did react. It took several days and it was low grade, but when I went off the pills the reaction went away. Not sure exactly what prilosec formulation...
  11. that works great! Thanks for making the effort for your friend to be a part of the celebration. Parties are rough. Cross contamination (like we're discussing) can really wreck the holiday if we're not REALLY careful. have a great party!
  12. also, many cheese fondues have beer and or flour. Either of those would be bad fro her, too.
  13. 1. I promise, it's not the end of the world. I used to eat bread to calm down my stomach from the GERD. yeah, that was a big help. 2. In the VERY cheap and easy category, Thai Kitchen has several rice noodle soups, some in packets some in plastic bowls. Those that are gluten-free say so on the label. The packets are $.89 at my store. I frequently...
  14. If someone inquires, I start with a simple "food allergies" That takes care of 75% of those that inquire. If pressed I go to the "my body perceives wheat, rye and barley as poison" then if REALLY pressed I go to the glance at their food and the statement with dramatic inflection, "you really don't want to know while you're eating". BTW, I'm a native...
  15. My Presbyopia diagnosis came right about the same time as the Celiac dx. so, just as I have to start reading allthese labels, I need the reading glasses to do it. talk about adding insult to injury!
  16. I understood the pumpkin cheescake once we hit dinner, but the jump form cat litter to food was pretty fast for me.... Now that y'all brought it up, I've gotta go read that label now. Never thought about it before, but it does throw a lot of dust. I make my husband deal with the dry food, but I deal with the box. Yet another source of possible glutening...
  17. Yeah, on bad days, I ask my non-gluten-free hubby who used to work pest control and who keeps leaving bread crumbs all over everything, how he'd feel if I left rat poison all over the ktichen... Aw, come on, that amount would only make you a little sick. It wouldn't kill you or anything.. Then he's careful for a few days. Of course this is only...
  18. There's a local sausage maker around here: Uncle Charlies that's gluten free. (I got the Italian hubby to eat gluten-free pasta, but he wanted the italian sausage!) you may also find a local butcher that makes their own. In addition to the ones already cited, hormel's Little Sizzlers are gluten-free: Open Original Shared Link
  19. I also get canker sores from acidic foods -- I LOVE fresh pineapple and strawberries, but if I eat them, I get canker sores. I gotten them less since going gluten-free, but I still sometimes get them.
  20. For pot luck thingy's I usually just bring my own. IF I know a person and trust a person, I'll take some of theirs, But I go first. I got over that whole southern girl thing, and just make some joke about getting my food before someone drops crumbs in it. On a brighter note, when I left my last job, my co-workers went to whole foods and bought stuff to...
  21. I've also found out that, while trace amounts may not elicit a reaction, trace amounts for a few days in a row will. (took a pill with bad starch in it. no reaction until about day 4) so, inadvertent glutening can be hard to track down. until and unless you're POSITIVE that everything is gluten-free. Oh, and as a newbie I also found out that airborne...
  22. I like the way you think!
  23. In Pittsburgh there's a local chain (Mitchell's) that has a gluten-free menu and their BBQ shrimp are on it! I love them! Thanks for your recipe.
  24. My husband sells Watkins (and there are independent Watkins reps all over) and their soup bases (chicken, beef, vegetable) are all gluten-free, so are their pudding mixes, spices, BBQ sauce, and even some of the spice mixes like grill mix. The soup base also has a recipe for using it to make gravy. We just substitute a gluten-free flour.
