ARCHIVED How Do You Emotionally Deal With Setbacks?
Gemini replied to icelandgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
So, are you from Iceland or actually in Iceland? Because I have Iceland on my places to visit and if I do, and you are there, we could definitely get together for tea/coffee/wine......whatever you drink. Can't have the jumping gelato but I do love a good glass of red wine! -
ARCHIVED How Do You Emotionally Deal With Setbacks?
Gemini replied to icelandgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I did very well on the gluten-free diet and then at the 2 year mark, that's when the dairy problem became evident. I did not figure this out sooner because my gut was totally trashed at diagnosis so I probably didn't notice the fact that dairy was becoming a problem until I had healed a bit. That's a fairly common thing to happen to us. So...after 9 years... -

Are you sensitive to dairy also? I am not sure if the bittersweet contains dairy but that's another possibility. I would wait before trying any rich chocolate....at least until you feel better. I know how frustrating that can be but the good news is that, after time, you should be able to tolerate these types of foods again. I have been gluten-free for... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Emotionally Deal With Setbacks?
Gemini replied to icelandgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I highly doubt that there was any gluten in the chocolate chips. Ghirardelli does an excellent job during manufacturing and I eat these same ones every time I make cookies and have never gotten sick once in 9 years gluten-free. I am an extremely sensitive celiac also. You have not been gluten-free for very long at all......and these chocolate chips are... -
ARCHIVED I Like Our Doctor For Other Reasons And Don't Want To Switch....
Gemini replied to BlessedMommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thank you, Stephanie, for answering this question. You beat me to it! I think any difference in testing preference might be the amount of gene testing being done. Maybe if a doctor is doing gene testing on a number of suspected conditions, they might prefer the blood test. If you just want to know if you carry either DQ-2 or DQ-8, then go with the cheek... -
ARCHIVED Emotionally Right Back To Where I Was 18 Months Ago
Gemini replied to tspiggy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, I think that any doctor who would say that is kind of a jerk. Just because something is hereditary does not mean you will get it. My father has glaucoma and I never give it a second thought. He is on eye drops to control the pressure in his eyes and has not lost any vision and he is 81. I see an ophthalmologist because I have Sjogren's Syndrome... -

Oh.......Bath is lovely! Hope you have a great time! -
Josie....don't even sweat this trip one bit! I went to Ireland in the spring of 2011 and was thrilled to find out that everywhere I went to eat, every single person I spoke to knew all about Celiac. Ireland has very high rates of it and they accommodate to an amazing degree. On ordering my first breakfast there, after landing at the airport and driving...

ARCHIVED Sometimes People Say Such Stupid Things The Only Way To Handle It Is To Laugh!
Gemini replied to motheroftwins2010's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ha! I found that after menopause, I really didn't give a poop about what other people thought about my diet or what I had to do to stay healthy. There is a certain sense of self assuredness that comes with age and I'm kind of enjoying it myself. -
ARCHIVED Emotionally Right Back To Where I Was 18 Months Ago
Gemini replied to tspiggy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The one thing to remember is that everyone, regardless of whether or not they have Celiac Disease, could develop a problem as they get older. It's called the aging process. However, that does not mean you will develop further problems from Celiac. I have 3 other autoimmune diseases from going so long with undiagnosed Celiac and will turn 55 years old in... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Foods That Are Not High In Sugar, Fat Or Salt?
Gemini replied to iamtganderson's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
To play devil's advocate here...there are great, healthy brands of bread and other gluten-free stuff out there so it's all about reading the labels. Canyon Bakehouse San Juan 7 grain bread is incredible and very healthy, nutrition wise. Baking your own stuff using whole grain flours is another good way to go, as Laura mentioned. I am not a believer in... -

ARCHIVED Severity Of Symptoms Linked To Genetic Profile?
Gemini replied to sweetsailing's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, I have double DQ-2 and I presented with classic Celiac. I believe, in hindsight, that I triggered as a toddler because some of my teeth came in without enamel and I have had serious stomach issues since I was 3-4 years old. It ended up in an emergency appendectomy when I was 8 years old. I was not diagnosed until I was 46 and by then, I was 94 pounds... -
ARCHIVED Synthroid Revisited...other Brands Better?
Gemini replied to livinthelife's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Synthroid may very well be gluten-free....just because they do not test their product does not mean it contains gluten. I personally have never used Synthroid as I prefer a hormone replacement of both T3 and T4. I use Nature-throid and have never had a problem with it and I am extremely sensitive to tiny amounts of gluten. Having a "bad" Celiac panel... -
ARCHIVED Mercury Toxicity?
Gemini replied to jamiecasabellameeks's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
What feeds yeast even more is sugar. The odds of anyone having mercury problems, unless directly exposed to/ingested it, is pretty slim. You will not develop mercury toxicity from amalgam fillings. That is pseudo science perpetrated by people who will make money off of people's lack of knowledge on it. I know a lot about Candida issues and Celiac Disease... -
ARCHIVED Waiting On Daughters Biopsy Results, And Have A Question.
Gemini replied to mom2J's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think once your daughter goes gluten free, things will improve dramatically. She also has Hashi's, which is one of the most common associated conditions with Celiac. You are lucky that this was caught so young! Many of us were deathly ill from going so long without a diagnosis and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. If there are any foods that your daughter... -
ARCHIVED Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency
Gemini replied to Gemini's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I don't think having what would appear to be undigested nuts in your stool as a symptom of pancreatic insufficiency. Nuts generally are not broken down completely because they are rich in fiber and hard to digest. Your body will extract the nutrients out of them but the 'shell' will remain intact. Corn and peas are another example of this. The same thing... -
ARCHIVED Waiting On Daughters Biopsy Results, And Have A Question.
Gemini replied to mom2J's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Actually, it is really important, as GottaSki mentioned, to have the complete Celiac panel done. tTg can be elevated with Hashi's alone. Ttg is not useful for dietary compliance if diagnosed with Celiac....the DGP is. It would be really worthwhile to have original numbers before a gluten-free diet is started. mom2J......I would bet a week's pay your... -
ARCHIVED Colonscopy To Dx Celiac After 2 Years Gluten Free?
Gemini replied to Shantess's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There is not a higher incidence of colon cancer in Celiacs. Maybe in people who don't know that have it and keep eating a gluten filled diet but for those who adhere to the diet and heal, the incidence of cancer is not elevated. There was a recent study done on it and I think it was posted here on c.com.......I'll have to have a look. -
No one was asking you to defend your diagnosis so no need to be defensive. From the type of information you posted, it wasn't clear whether you had a DH diagnosis or not. I'm sure you are well read but it appears some of your information was not from reputable sources and is incorrect. That needed to be addressed for the same reason we do over and over...

I never had any problems going gluten free because I was so very sick at diagnosis....it was super easy for me. HOWEVER......one day, the Greek festival returned to my city after a devastating fire in the church stopped the celebration for about 4 years. I was so excited because my husband and I enjoyed going and eating all that fantastic Greek food, made...

Colleen is correct and I am always in wonder at those who would choose to believe the word of a chiropractor for Celiac Disease related topics over respected experts in the field of Celiac Disease. I am not knocking chiropractic because I have a phenomenal chiropractor who has done brilliant things with healing muscle and joint injuries I have had but I...

ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Melatonin?
Gemini replied to JodyM75's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think that information is incorrect, Addy. I use sublingual DHEA and there are brands which are gluten free. I have never seen wheat starch listed on any bottle of a sublingual supplement. I have never used melatonin but I am sure, with a google search, a gluten free version can be easily found. -
