ARCHIVED What Do You Do At A Wedding?
Gemini replied to Ciel121's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It really is a shame when you trust no one in the catering/restaurant business because there are many that do an outstanding job. And if you educate yourself well, then you'll be able to weed out the ones who may not do such a good job....long before the food reaches your plate. I attended a wedding in NY in the Hudson River Valley in 2011, and it was... -
ARCHIVED So Confused On What I Can And Cant Eat
Gemini replied to bjb's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
bjb......if you go strictly gluten-free and are not experiencing major GI problems, then dairy may not be a problem. Dairy reactions are extremely similar, GI-wise, to a gluten reaction. However, if you have cut out dairy and don't mind, then stay with it. You would have continued bloating or diarrhea with lactose intolerance...those are the hallmark symptoms... -
ARCHIVED What Do You Do At A Wedding?
Gemini replied to Ciel121's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have a wedding to attend at the end of May and it is for a family member so it was easier for me to address my food issues with them. I have a different attitude about it all and I really think that if people are going to have a wedding or a party, in other words, they will be a host, it is up to them to make sure there is safe food for ALL of their guests... -
ARCHIVED So Confused On What I Can And Cant Eat
Gemini replied to bjb's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Kareng.......you are so funny! I have this cookie weakness too. bjb......this is another example of misleading information on the web. The only thing you need to drop from your diet for good is gluten but the dairy may come back. If you are not having symptoms of lactose intolerance, there is no reason to give up dairy. Some gluten-free goodies/processed... -
Your eyes will get extremely red from inflammation from dry eye/Sjogren's. The fact that you have a very dry mouth and "other bits" raises the red flag! Guess it's time to educate your doctors.......not that I want you to have Sjogren's but it's another one they never look for. My niece has Sjogren's also and she actually had the enlarged parotid glands...

Hi June27! Glad to hear the Restasis is working for you. I really hate the fact that I have to use these forever (or until something better comes along), but got tired of having brick red eyes and having them hurt. It does work well, though.

ARCHIVED Anyone With Second Endoscopy After Going gluten-free ?
Gemini replied to PersianCeliac's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
One year is not very long to heal, especially if you went a long time before diagnosis. It took me 3 years before every symptom went away completely, even though my blood work was stellar after one year gluten free. If your aunt's entire small intestine was damaged, it will take quite awhile to heal but she shouldn't be worried about it. This is the norm... -
ARCHIVED Gluten On Dishes? Being Too Careful?
Gemini replied to Laura.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No...I really have to disagree on this one. I am extremely sensitive but I really think this has nothing to do with sensitivity at all. Even if you did find a dish soap with gluten in it, most people rinse their dishes well after washing. I don't know about you, but I really hate the taste of soap..... it's downright gag-able. Eating soap or soap residue... -
ARCHIVED Gluten On Dishes? Being Too Careful?
Gemini replied to Laura.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Takala.......your protestations of us giving bad advice are getting old. I would never give bad advice to another Celiac...just good, common sense, educated advice. Otherwise, people will become overly obsessed and paranoid and they don't need that added to their learning curve of being a new celiac. They need to know that they can live a totally normal... -

Thanks, Irish, for chiming in about the cutting board and colander! I always forget something..... -
ARCHIVED Can't Trust So Called Gluten Free Menu Items Anymore
Gemini replied to glutego's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Maybe it's the area you live in but I am in Boston and I have to say that most restaurants go out of their way to make sure I have a safe meal. Why would anyone lie to a celiac and not care? Do you think they really want to sabotage their business and get a bad name? There are many places that offer up gluten-free meals now and, from my limited experience... -
Health has nothing to do with this. jhol...please have them do the blood work to test you for Sjogren's Syndrome, which is another autoimmune disease that happens much more frequently in Celiacs. I have Sjogren's and this past couple of weeks, because of the mold count over here aggravating the underlying AI problem, I look like a hell hound. My eyes go...

ARCHIVED Gluten On Dishes? Being Too Careful?
Gemini replied to Laura.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Laura, The one thing you have to be careful of is being too overly obsessed about things and it is very easy to do that in the beginning. There is no need to use seperate dishes or utensils as long as you just give them a good wash after....and most people wash their dishes well after using them for a meal. Pots and pans need to be dedicated gluten... -
ARCHIVED Wwyd?
Gemini replied to NotMollyRingwald's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Everyone always thinks that having to go gluten free means the end of good food or a really different diet. Then, you start being gluten-free and can't imagine why you were so worried about it. There are so many naturally gluten-free foods out there and they are the best way to eat anyway if you are working on fitness and weight training. I don't need... -
ARCHIVED Cyrex Cross Reactivity Test Accuracy?
Gemini replied to laura4669's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This whole cross reactive hype is total nonsense. The only thing your body recognizes as gluten is gluten itself.....wheat, barley, rye and oats, in some people. If you have been having symptoms after going gluten-free, then you most likely have additional intolerances or something else going on. Many Celiacs cannot tolerate other grains or potatoes for... -
ARCHIVED Wwyd?
Gemini replied to NotMollyRingwald's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just some added thoughts......Fibromyalgia and IBS are not a diagnosis. These are a collection of symptoms that people get from underlying conditions, Celiac being one of them, so what doctors do today is put a label on a list of symptoms and then treat the symptoms...which does nothing for the underlying condition. I firmly believe that all of this is... -
ARCHIVED Wwyd?
Gemini replied to NotMollyRingwald's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Ok...you posted before me! If the DGP IgA is for total Iga, the nurse is correct. My total Iga at diagnosis was just under 800 but has dropped significantly since going gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Wwyd?
Gemini replied to NotMollyRingwald's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Elevated protein counts can mean a number of things and have nothing to do with what you eat. It can definitely mean the presence of an autoimmune condition and Celiac Disease can raise blood protein levels. Most doctors do not know this. The reason I do know this is because mine were elevated from Celiac and having elevated protein levels will send a... -
ARCHIVED Finding A Pharmacy And Pharmacist That Will Help
Gemini replied to KikiB's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Great post, Addy, and I couldn't agree with you more. I learned the same way when a pharmacist behaved like that with me. She seemd all annoyed that I would waste her precious time asking such silly questions. I even made her take the medication BACK, after it was filled, because I just could not verify that the med was even close to being gluten-free.... -
ARCHIVED Finding A Pharmacy And Pharmacist That Will Help
Gemini replied to KikiB's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I know it can take a while for call backs and it can be frustrating but it's the reality that we live with. Many meds do not actually contain gluten but you will not get that guarantee from any company, unless they specifically cater to celiacs. It's all about liability. Same for food products. People expect guarantees that something is 100% gluten-free... -
ARCHIVED Thoughts For Boston 4-15-2013
Gemini replied to Lisa's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
This is why terrorists will never win. No one can break this spirit. Thanks for posting......I have goosebumps and it isn't from my allergies! -
ARCHIVED Finding A Pharmacy And Pharmacist That Will Help
Gemini replied to KikiB's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I rarely fill any prescriptions but my viewpoint may be different than many. I feel it is up to us to find out what is gluten-free or not because you cannot rely on people who do not have Celiac Disease to know what questions to ask. Pharmacists only fill prescriptions and are trained to know what medications have cross reactions with other meds......they... -
ARCHIVED What A Difference A Year (Well Four Years) Makes!
Gemini replied to GottaSki's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Nancy....you might actually find that gluten is the aggravator of your MS. It might be that you have had Celiac for years and did not know and ended up triggering for MS because of all the gluten ingestion. When you are eating food that is activating your immune system and causing inflammation, that is one of the reasons you start to pop with other AI diseases... -
ARCHIVED What A Difference A Year (Well Four Years) Makes!
Gemini replied to GottaSki's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well....if you keep up that work out in the gym, we'll be able to hire ourselves out as body guards. I am totally impressed because not too long ago, there was no way you could have had a day like that! Healing is kind of funny.....you feel like things will never be completely normal and then, as time passes, you just start doing things you couldn't have... -
ARCHIVED Please Describe Spring...am Getting Desperate.
Gemini replied to love2travel's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I used to like Spring but not anymore. My eyes have been red for 3 weeks and I have had trouble not sneezing constantly when I go outdoors on high mold days. It has not been this bad in years but we had a lot of snow this winter and snow ends up as mold in the Spring. Freakin' Bah Humbug.....you can keep mold season. So, I guess retirement for me...
