  1. Here is a link that may help you.....Open Original Shared Link NH is getting much better at serving gluten-free meals and many more places are popping up that have a menu or will accommodate. I can only personally recommend one called "Tavern 27" in Laconia. They do phenomenal tapas and most of their menu is gluten free. They have a dedicated fryer...
  2. Yes, we have had this conversation before and I think that Peter and Lisa explained things pretty clearly. Anything imported from other countries would still fall under the labeling laws for the US so if you can read a label, you should be able to figure it out. That doesn't apply to newbies but you are only confusing things and scaring unnecessarily. I...
  3. I agree with this line of thought. Doctors ought to be hanged for the amount of cholesterol drugs they push on people. I have also found that a diet high in carbs will raise cholesterol...not the meat fear they like to put out there. High carbs raise blood sugar and that triggers inflammation. But don't worry....we have steroids for that inflammation......
  4. I would take everything Hasselbeck says with a HUGE grain of salt. You do not have to take your own shampoo to the hairdressers, unless you only use a certain shampoo all the time. I get my hair colored every 4 weeks because my hair now grows incredibly fast and use their color and shampoo/conditioner and have never had any issue with it. You are correct...
  5. I'm happy to hear that you are weight stable so I don't think you have Refractory. I know it can be daunting at times when eating out but you can eat out successfully even with Celiac Disease. You just have to limit the times you go out and stick with places that get it right. I love eating out but have found the high end restaurants are much better at serving...
  6. Hi Bob, Sorry you have had this experience and I know what that's like! Doctors just love to scare people.... I have had lifelong low white cell counts and that can be solely from having autoimmune problems. I went the hematologist route also, even though I never believed I had anything more serious than Celiac and a few of the other associated...
  7. Unless you have an added allergy to a particular grain or have noticed reactions after eating grains, there is no need to give up all grains to heal. It is most definitely NOT a requirement to healing and anyone who tells you that is wrong. Some people need to do so but you can have gluten-free pizza or bread when first diagnosed and have it not be a problem...
  8. Don't hold your breath....at the rate this economy is going, it's going to be a while before I retire. However, when it happens, you'll be the first to know. Soemone will have to cover the breakfast because I am NOT a morning person. I can cover the wine hour in the afternoon......
  9. Sorry.....unless you are eating soap, it's not an issue. I have yet to see any Celiac organization warn about dishwasher soap and there should not be any soap residue on plates from hand washing or running through a dishwasher. If there is, then better rinsing needs to be done. It is a common sense issue. However, if people want to believe that you can...
  10. I think this whole idea that you have to give up all grains to heal is pure horse-pucky, for most Celiacs. I was the same as you....my numbers were off the charts and I refused the biopsy as I was so very, very ill at the time of diagnosis. Actually, I have as little to do with doctors as humanly possible and I have healed fine. How do I know this? I have...
  11. Well, if I knew that you and I would be cooking all the food, I'd be happy as anything to come to Croatia! My biggest fear when traveling to out of the way places is getting sick or lack of good food to eat. Not a problem in your kitchen! Bed and breakfast for Celiacs has got to be a HUGE, untapped market! I should really do this in retirement.......
  12. I've never had any reason to identify myself as a Celiac other than telling someone and if you ended up in the ER unconscious, all drugs would be given via an IV, which is not a concern for a Celiac. However, if I had an allergy which caused anaphylaxis, that's another matter entirely.
  13. I tried that when I was first diagnosed and I agree......it was not even edible. I don't do much salt and it was the saltiest boxed food I have ever tasted. Can you believe they make money selling that stuff? Homemade is so much better and you have control over the salt amounts.....
  14. OK folks...sounds like Croatia will be next on the bucket list! Sounds heavenly...... Bartfull....I am in the midst of a move into my new home and it's supposed to happen by end of July so travel right now is not an option BUT there is always next year and I really want to come and see your home. What a great description and I can picture it very well...
  15. Is your doctor doing the full Celiac panel because if they aren't, they are being irresponsible. Having a negative EMA in a 9 year old is most likely because he/she has not sustained enough damage to their system to register on the test. A weak positive on a tTg means damage has started and will continue to get worse unless that child is gluten free. To see...
  16. Ahhhhhhhh, here is a wise, wise man , ladies!
  17. Unless your son is having symptoms, I see no reason to stop letting him have these 2 items. I only eat the Mac and Cheese by Amy's because I think it the best out there but I usually only have a very small amount because I am dairy light. I have never had any type of reaction from their Mac and Cheese. I am very sensitive to small amounts of gluten. I don...
  18. Bartfull.....your town looks like a really nice place to live, although I am always blown away at the vastness of the countryside and roads! I live in little New England, outside of Boston and they pretty much just paved the cow paths used many years ago so I am used to small and compact. I was in Colorado a while ago and it was the first time I had seen...
  19. I don't think this is a big worry at all, as far as frequency of the worry about it happening. I have drunk many, many glasses of wine over 7 years at restaurants and have never gotten sick from a wine glass and yes, I am very, very sensitive for those of you who would ask such a question. Pastry places are always a gamble but I have never found anything...
  20. I hate to say this but I am still at the dairy "very light" stage and it ain't coming back for me. I do fine with small amounts like milk in my tea and a little cheese sprinkled on food but if I eat ice cream, pudding or any large hit of dairy, I may as well have taken a laxative. It's been 7 years so I no longer am upset about it. Going dairy light feels...
  21. If you are going to offer up your IMHO, then be prepared to receive comments. Are you saying that just because you throw that in, I can't make a comment back? Poppycock! Again...new Celiacs need to know this is not an issue. There is no love of family if they are trying to manipulate and guilt another family member into eating "their way". Don't confuse...
  22. Bartfull.....isn't it an amazing and life changing moment when healing finally happens and pain is going away? I am so happy for you and know exactly how you feel! I will keep you in mind as I have wanted to see Mount Rushmore ever since seeing one of my all time favorite movies, North by Northwest. Really....you may hear from me in the future and we'll...
  23. Talk about guilting people into being overly compliant when there isn't any issue! This has nothing to do with love and not everyone has a problem with gluten. If the food is being carried in a bag from the grocery store, there is no issue at all. Have some common sense people!
  24. Unless your pharmacist has Celiac, why would anyone rely on an outside person to deem their meds safe? Pharmacists have a degree in dispensing meds but that doesn't mean they know everything about them. I never trust anyone with verifying a medication as gluten free but research it myself. If I have a known medication that is gluten-free and works well...
  25. How it works, from my perspective and experience which mirrors your fathers symptoms, once you trigger for Celiac, damage will continue if any gluten is ingested. By going gluten free, you give your body a break and it starts to heal but then cheating occurs. People can have stronger reactions but the damage will continue until you reach critical mass, as...
