ARCHIVED Positive Airline Experience
Gemini replied to mushroom's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Virgin Atlantic did the same for me on a return flight to the States. I changed my return date back home from England and they did not have time to prepare a gluten-free meal. I was told by the concierge that they would withhold food from first class passengers that would fit my dietary requirements and gave me first dibs on everything. Talk about service... -
You will never know if you react to oats until you try them. Many Celiacs can tolerate oats just fine, including myself, and I am a diagnosed, extremely sensitive Celiac. I use Gifts of Nature oats, which I buy on-line. Oats are also a big source of fiber and many people have trouble with fiber. It can cause the same reaction as a gluten reaction. Gas...

ARCHIVED When Going Gluten Free Isn't Enough
Gemini replied to MariaOfColumbia's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
WOW! What an enlightened boss you have! All I ever get when I talk of food and nutritional stuff is the ever so common eye roll. Your boss is a keeper! I have a co-worker who has been diagnosed with ITP, which is an autoimmune platelet problem. You become a bleeder and it's life threatening. He has massive thyroid symptoms, mouth sores all the time... -
ARCHIVED Dentist Visit

I don't know who told you that flour is added to the gloves to make powder but that's nonsense. Do the research and don't automatically assume what someone says is correct as there is so much bad information out there. There are those who think there is flour in everything. Powder is usually always talc or cornstarch and cornstarch is the preferred... -
ARCHIVED When Going Gluten Free Isn't Enough
Gemini replied to MariaOfColumbia's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
This is very important because many people still having problems get side-tracked into thinking that it's gluten causing the problem, when most of the time it's another intolerance or sensitivity that's the culprit. You've done a great job, Maria, figuring this all out and I'm impressed because I love chocolate so understand the difficulty with giving that... -
ARCHIVED When Someone Asks, "how Can I Get That [Celiac]?"
Gemini replied to Finally-45's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As a skinny Celiac myself, I had to endure people's comments about eating disorders until I got my diagnosis. I hope they all felt bad about their stupid comments but I don't care about that anymore. The one thing you have to remember is that many people are clueless about food issues so you are never going to get the level of understanding that you would... -
ARCHIVED Dentist Visit
Gemini replied to TiaMichi2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Miriam.....there should be no worries regarding a dental visit. I have had more dental work done than most Celiacs combined and only had a reaction once, but it was not from gluten. It was from the gums used in many dental impression materials....I am sensitive to gums. I did extensive research on dental materials and was never able to find any which... -
ARCHIVED New To Forum With Blood Work Questions...
Gemini replied to Trudyjerry's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Welcome! I think you may be another candidate for Celiac Poster Child of the Month! What are confused about, exactly? You have to be consuming gluten on a daily basis for a blood panel to be accurate. If you went gluten-free, then don't bother with testing, including a biopsy. You will have started to heal and they won't find anything to back... -
You know, I am almost having an anxiety attack reading this post! Your Mum has passed away, you cannot drink, you quit smoking AND you have been glutened?!?!? If you were here, I'd give ya a BIG hug! My deepest condolences on your Mother's loss because that must be a shock when it happens. I haven't had that happen yet but everyone goes through...

ARCHIVED Travel Immunizations For Kenya
Gemini replied to dramamama's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It's nice to see someone who knows their stuff! There are no gluten concerns with injectables for 2 reasons....if there were any gluten in immunizations, they by-pass the gut so would not cause a Celiac reaction. Second, the odds of their being any gluten in immunizations is next to none. Injectables are not meant to be thick...that would make it harder... -
Joe....I am sorry you were taken so badly by whatever physician claims to have shown you this. This is complete and utter hogwash. My sister works for a major hospital in Boston and has for close to 40 years. She has worked in the transplant unit and in most of the labs in the hospital so she has experience in these matters. She's a blood expert, or...

ARCHIVED Teeth Cleaning At Dentist's
Gemini replied to lovetapioca's topic in Super Sensitive People
Bubba's Mom.....you had the exact same experience I did when I had a reaction. They did multiple impressions for an implant and I had a bad reaction on the way home. I almost had to pull the car over and sit there by the side of the road, it was so pronounced. The next time they did an impression, they really were careful and I only needed one impression... -
ARCHIVED Traveling Overseas ... Any Guidance?
Gemini replied to Pisqualie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The only thing I can say is that how could it be that this America, who has spent approx. 3 months in the UK and Ireland, had little trouble finding food I could eat, had little trouble with the locals in understanding what I needed, and have eaten out at least once a day on all my trips post gluten free diagnosis and only been hit twice, on a small level... -
ARCHIVED Traveling Overseas ... Any Guidance?
Gemini replied to Pisqualie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I really hate to disagree with you but the UK is excellent at gluten free dining. Having been there 9 times, 4 of which when I was diagnosed and eating gluten free, I was glutened twice. It was small CC issues and I recovered well enough that it did not ruin my vacation but eating out is a risk anywhere in the world and it can happen. However, seeing that... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Related Muscle Pain/discomfort
Gemini replied to Echen Alexander's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Lactic acid occurs naturally after exercise in some people and is not the result of exercising too much or incorrectly. It should not last more than a day after exercise. I get sore after every work-out when weight training but you have to push yourself with weights if you want the benefit. It's normal. I have no answers for you but hope you find relief... -
I researched the wax issue when first diagnosed, 7 years ago. As I have not had any of the many symptoms I had since diagnosis return, have stellar blood work and feel great, AND eat copious amounts of fruits and veggies everyday, I think that speaks for itself. There comes a point where you have to relax and not get so worried about things that do not make...

The FDA are not experts on gluten and never have been. They rate right up there with the medical profession, as far as accuracy goes. I researched it extensively when first gluten free 7 years ago and never found any credible evidence that there is gluten in the wax coatings on veggies and fruit. It is just wax. The other big factor was I am an extremely...

Waxes on produce are gluten free....they are just wax. However, wax isn't all that easy to digest for some. Like xanthan and guar gum, it can cause problems for some Celiacs but it is not a gluten related issue. I am extremely sensitive to any gluten and I have problems with gums but not from waxes on produce. There are produce cleaning sprays that are...

ARCHIVED Why Can't My Body Handle Long Runs?
Gemini replied to Kat Kuz's topic in Sports and Fitness
I think that to expect to be able to run long distance or exercise hard after only 3-4 months of being gluten-free is unrealistic. It doesn't matter what vitamin or mineral levels are because it takes the body a long while to fully recuperate to the level where you can stress it and bounce back like a 28 year old should. I know that's hard to fully comprehend... -
ARCHIVED The Gluten Free Label
Gemini replied to lucky97's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Let me clarify.....most of the companies that label their products as "certified" gluten free source their ingredients from suppliers to make sure they are gluten free as can be and they test voluntarily. They are not required by law to do so but many, many companies do test their products. Certified gluten free, from a dedicated facility, is as good as... -
ARCHIVED Help! Dont Understand This!
Gemini replied to Michelle L's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Michelle...I was always the skinny Celiac and ended up weighing 97 pounds at diagnosis. It was 6 months before I started to gain any weight at all. However, I have topped out at 110-112 and have not been able to gain any more weight but here's why.....I eat a mainly whole foods diet and you don't gain a whole lot of weight eating fruits, veggies and protein... -
There are no false positives with Celiac testing.....only false negatives. If you tripped any of the tests in a Celiac panel, it means you have a problem with gluten on some level. It also does not matter what source the wheat comes from, wheat is wheat and will cause a reaction. It has nothing to do with genetically modified or added ingredients. Wheat...

I have never heard of Leon, India, but thank you for this tip! I'll add it to my list.

I'll add my 2 cents worth.....London is pretty good with gluten-free and I would highly recommend a flat rental because you'll also have more room for the same price as a hotel. There is a phenomenal Whole Foods Market in Kensington, a couple of blocks from the Kensington High St. tube station that has tons of gluten-free foods and about the best selection...
