I still think you guys should come to the Big Island <G>!
-
Hi, take a look at Open Original Shared Link where I listed a few places on Oahu. I'm on the Big Island and dont know much about Maui places these days but people in general people are becoming more aware in Hawaii. I work with the chefs on the Big Island so it's a little more gluten-free aware than the other islands. Also if you search Hawaii...

I find it almost impossible these days to eat at the Chinese places here in Hawaii as everything is in soy sauce. If they have rice noodles, they are not always 100% rice. YOu have to explain to them your allergic to soy sauce, (mostly wheat and not soy) four, and breading of any kind. You could go a day early and give them a bottle of wheat free soy sauce...

I have this problem often with unseen flour in the air. Can't buy wine at costco as its next to the bakery. Can't walk into any bakery anymore. Every time over the past 2+ years since diagnoses if I get near flour, I have almost the same reaction you described. I've read on the forum that we can be affected on a molecular level. When I was first diagnosed...

Aloha A couple of good Oahu places are Town Chef Ed Kenny (Review) Open Original Shared Link 12th Ave. Grill Chef Kevin Haney Open Original Shared Link They are very close to each other and just a few minutes by car from waikiki area. Both these guys are celiac aware -- they have to be if I eat there! Still, I always call ahead of time... -
ARCHIVED I Should Go To Work For Goodyear
kenlove replied to sickchick's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Some Japanese/Oriental stores have these 2x4xhalf inch blocks of hard mochi rice -- I mean don't drop one on your foot. In the oven or microwave they soften and become like melted cheese. I've used them as a crust for pizza but also with a little spice they taste a little like cheese. good luck! ken - the other mad scientist -- or maybe just mad - or crazy -

ARCHIVED Coffee
kenlove replied to WhimsiKay's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use cinnamon or dried orange peel at times and grind them with the beans. Since I make my own vanilla extract from the beans we grow, I will occasionally add that to the coffee but really like the dried orange peel flavor the best. You can also oven pan roast your own hazelnuts / filberts or mac nuts and grind those with the beans. Great coffee... -
ARCHIVED Which Is The Best Slow Cooker?
kenlove replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
The last time I bust my Rival it took me a few months to find another but I bought 3 of them when I did. I use the bowl to pickle things too as well as the slow cooker. With luck you can find another. I have 2 other types but still like the Rival the best. ken -

ARCHIVED Cashews
kenlove replied to MELINE's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Meline, besides the CC issues others mentioned there is a remote chance (knowing some of the other problems you have) that you could have a toxicity to cashews. Cashew nuts that have not been carefully roasted are highly toxic. They are in the same plant family as mango, and other more poisonous plants. If you've not had any trouble with them before... -
ARCHIVED 1200 Calorie Nutritious Diet
kenlove replied to MinnieM's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Years ago I was in TOPS ( Take off pounds sensibly) and was on 1200 Calories a day for more than a year before going to 1500. I need to do it again too! Reading calorie books was really helpful. In those days I didn't have a cholesterol problem so I ate a lot of Chicken liver dinners. The trick for me was finding low calorie filling foods. Ate tons of spinach... -
ARCHIVED Surreptitious gluten-free Dining
kenlove replied to Voix's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You really do have to explain each time, Even on airplanes. One flight attendant felt sorry for me and stuck a bagel on top of my "gluten free salad" which rendered it inedible. Even in health food stores with cafe's, they often don't understand and the risk for cross contamination is very high. Good luck ken -

Use a flash 99% of the time. if you've done baby's then parties should be a breeze. If you set people up in groups or shoot tables of people, do more than one shot. Get an extra memory card if your using digital or extra film. When I taught photography what seems like a zillion years ago I always told students to turn the camera verticle -- something... -

ARCHIVED Gluten-free Around The World
kenlove replied to Egenglert's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Most of the soy sauce in Japan is aqlso kikkoman or yamasa. Dont use them as they are 60% or more wheat based. I used to bring my own san-J wheat free soy sauces with me but last March found a bunch of different ones based on awa, hie, kibi and sorghum. The first 3 are different types of millets. Some health food stores in Japan also carry a quiona based... -
Hi, I live in Kona and have yet to hear of otehr celiacs in Hilo -- Only know of 4 of us on the west side. Still someone must be buying all the gluten-free foods at the health food store across from Puainako. Maybe you can post something on the board there. If you find any gluten-free friendly restaurants on that side please let me know too. The last...

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Throw Up With Celiac?
kenlove replied to Bri's mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I threw up every morning for 6 months prior to diagnoses. Since she is being gluten-free it could be a sign of another allergy or getting some minute of gluten from a strange or unknown source. Good luck figuring it out.
