ARCHIVED 6yr Old Type 1 Diabetic (2yrs) New Celiac
RiceAddict replied to samsmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Those are some great suggestions. I have other foods that I avoid so I'm probably not the best one to ask what I snack on, but if I could eat anything (gluten-free) here are some low carb snacks I would consider: broccoli and cheese green beans (I have come addicted to gb's, I eat them almost every day) carrots and dip various nuts-I used to eat almonds... -
This link was posted on another group for diabetics, but starting on pg4 there are some gluten-free and othe food alergy t-shirts. Some of them are very creative and funny. In case anyone is interested. Open Original Shared Link

The manager is right, you shouldn't eat out. In fact, you shouldn't eat anything that you did not grow on your own farm. You also shouldn't drink anything but bottled water. If you would be so kind as to seal yourself into a bag with just some carrots to tide you over, it would be a REAL convenience for all the "normal" folks out there. Sheesh! What...

ARCHIVED 6yr Old Type 1 Diabetic (2yrs) New Celiac
RiceAddict replied to samsmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm sending you a longer PM, but I just want to say 2 things. 1-type 1 diabetes plus celiac really SUCKS! 2-I have both and am proof that it can be done and that it is possible to lead a somewhat normal life, it just takes a little planning and some work. Juliebove--I have a pump and it make a HUGE difference in what diabetics can eat and when. I... -
ARCHIVED My Husband Tries To Be Gluten Free
RiceAddict replied to BamBam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am also a type 1 diabetic. I wear an insulin pump and I count carbs religiously. I've only been celiac since Nov, but I have not had too much trouble finding things to eat when away from home. I also have other foods that I am supposed to avaoid (tomatoes, potatoes, dairy.....) I usually just get meat cooked as plain as can be with no spices or sauces... -
ARCHIVED Going Out On Dates And Eating Gout With Friends
RiceAddict replied to basketballstar15's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I used to not have much of an opinion about where we would go out to eat when on dates or out with friends. But I now know WHAT and I can eat and WHERE, so I am always the first to speak up about where to eat. The other day we were out and someone suggested Panera Bread. Um.....sorry, I'm not going. I spoke up and we went to a steak joint instead. I... -
I haven't eaten at a taco bell in probably 5 years, and don't plan to anytime soon. But out of curiosity, what is the difference in a taco and a tostada? From what I can tell it is only the fact that the tortilla is curved or flat. Same stuffings, right? The tostada is listed as gluten-free but not the taco. What gives?

Oh, a Turkish restaurant card, that is brilliant! Do let me know how your trip goes.

OK, this is my first international travel since going gluten-free and I had to pick a tough one, I know. I'll be going to Turkey for about a week in late November (save the Thanksgiving turkey jokes, I've heard them all). So has anyone been? I honestly don't even know what Turkish cuisine is like. Needless to say I'm pretty worried. I have other dietary...

ARCHIVED Hello! I'm New!
RiceAddict replied to SerahLily's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
reyhan, I know I sent you a PM already, but will comment here as well. Welcome to the list. I will be visiting Istanbul in November, I know it is a long time to wait but I will bring you something good and gluten-free from the states. Are there strict customs laws regarding food? I know some countries are quite strict, but most processed and packaged... -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Diabetics At Disneyland....
RiceAddict replied to melrobsings's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I've never been to Disneyland, but have been diabetic for years. How hew is your bro? Carb counting just comes with experience. If you can identify the foods that he will most likely be eating ahead of time it will make things simple. For instance, burger, fries and a coke. The burger will be 30g, a little more with cheese, the fries will vary depending... -
ARCHIVED Resume And Cover Letter And References
RiceAddict replied to jesscarmel's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I receive resumes at work, I also councel students on resume prep, definitely do not bund them together. The first thing I do is staple the pages together so I dpn't lose them, but others may use a folder system. Also a plus to use nice paper but not anything to frilly, just a good quality lazer paper, not the cheap stuff. I would stick with white. You... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Kidney Transplants
RiceAddict replied to teeterbabe's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Unfortunately, you probably won't get many responces to your query. Fortunately, you will get at least one. I am awaiting a kidney transplant, but I am not on dialysis. I was diagnosed with the kidney disease in March of last year and my function wsa tested at 22%. I was evaluated for transplant and put on the waiting list in August. I was diagnosed... -
ARCHIVED Erectile Dysfunction
RiceAddict replied to Charlieswpa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I sort of have to go along with what others are saying here. I was diagnosed celiac in Nov and leading up to that time I just didn't have the drive or the energy. I would frequently just stop from exhaustion long before climax. I'm in my 20's, not overweight, so I thought I might have something seriously wrong. Well, does celiac count as seriously wrong... -
ARCHIVED Is There A Substitute For Tomatoes?
RiceAddict replied to a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Yea, that's a tough one. I used to eat pasta and sauce all the time. Now I'm off tomatoes, milk, spinich, and almost all the good sauce bases. I sometimes make a very simple sauce with butter (I use spreadable olive oil) and white wine. No measurements, just more butter for thicker more wine for thinner. Add any herbs and spices you like. I add garlic... -
ARCHIVED Nephrotic Syndrome/minimal Change Disease
RiceAddict replied to Jnkmnky's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I posted this in another thread a few weeks ago, don't know if it has any relevance, but if it helps someone then it's worth posting again. Last year I was dx with stage 4 renal insufficiency (aka kidney failure) The drs were pretty sure it was linked to my diabetes (which is common) but certain things just didn't add up. They did all kinds of tests... -
OK, I think it's time to do some serious research! For those of you who have been following this thread from the beginning, recall that I was DX with stage 4 chronic renal insufficiency (kidney failure) My total kidney function was measured at 22% in May. With my condition, it is NOT supposed to improve. I had a visit with my nephrologist on Thursday...

ARCHIVED Celiac Girl Scout Campout
RiceAddict replied to kschell's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Sandy, Are M&Ms, chocolate chips, and smores on the diabetes food list in Canada? lol. Just kidding, I have type I also, no need to explain, I understand what you meant. I think that is SO COOL that the troop/patrol has taken such an interest in your son's dietary needs. I can see how it becomes a learning experience for all. Thanks fo sharing... -
ARCHIVED Diabetes And Celiac
RiceAddict replied to Tim-n-VA's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Tim, I have type I diabetes and am on an insulin pump. I know some type II are on insulin as well. The biggest problem that I have with the two diseases is carb counting. It is possible, but takes some getting used to. Maybe it was just that I counted carbs on only the diabetic diet for so long? It is also difficult to find certain specialty items,... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Girl Scout Campout
RiceAddict replied to kschell's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I was a Boy Scout as a youth and had a life-changing experience in the program. I now serve on the board for the local scout council. Shortly after being diagnosed last November, I made the offer to volunteer to handle ANY food alergy or special needs campers at either of our two council camps. I deal with more than just gluten so I understand how things... -
ARCHIVED Is It A Red Head Thing?
RiceAddict replied to Rook's Mommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hair color is determined by genes. Red hair is a recessive gene, which is why it is less common. We are not Irish or Scottish but I am the ONLY person in my family with red hair. Also the only one with celiac, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. . I sure hope my REAL parents are rich! -

Necter of the gods!!!!!! Drink up. fyi-all Pepsi soda pop drinks are gluten-free -
Thanks lonewolf! Good that you bring this topic to the front line. I may be spinning way out of control here, but this came off the web: The following was taken from a lecture given by Dr. Joseph Murray in October, 1996. It was published by the Sprue-Nik Press (Published by the Tri-County Celiac Sprue Support Group, a chapter of CSA/USA, Inc. serving...

Very interesting. I am not familiar with nephrotic syndrome so I can't comment directly to that. However, in regards to celiac and kidneys, I have stage 4 chronic renal insufficiency (aka kidney failure) and am waiting for a transplant. In November I was diagnosed with celiac, as if I needed that too. Are the two somehow related....I have no idea. But...
