  1. Roommates can be the worst. I had various troubles with many of them. Stealing money and other things from me. Eating my food while I was at work. Being too messy. Bringing drugs into the apartment. Selling drugs from the apartment. Constantly having BF spend the night then having BF hit on me while she was sleeping. Not paying the rent or worse yet...
  2. I flipping hate it when they do that. I try to check every label all over, every time but once in a while I miss something.
  3. If you truly do have hypoglycemia, your Dr. should prescribe a meter for you so that you can test your blood sugar. If you have a prescription for both that and the test strips to be used with it, then your insurance will most likely cover it. If you have no insurance and/or your Dr. won't prescribe these things, then the Walmart brand is the cheapest one...
  4. I'm glad the Zyrtec worked for you. Didn't do a think for my daughter or I except for me to cause insane hives. I have never itched so much in my life than when taking that stuff. And then when I tried to stop it the itching got worse! Took about two weeks to get it all out of my system.
  5. My daughter had it but not from a food. Hers was from an antibiotic. They gave her some kind of med to help with the pain. I mainly fed her mild foods for a couple of weeks, like warm chicken and rice and warm broth. She was not supposed to have any overly hot or cold or spicy foots.
  6. Our Walmart has a small gluten-free section but you will also find gluten-free products mixed in on other aisles. We have learned the hard way to check every label on the items that Walmart sells and to look for things that are made on shared lines. There isn't much in the way of food that we can buy there.
  7. My daughter has lost about 36 pounds on South Beach. No counting calories. Basically the first two weeks are meat, cheese, eggs and as many non-starchy veggies that you want. You can also eat beans but no other carbs. They do give dessert suggestions such as ricotta cheese with cocoa powder, vanilla and an artificial sweetener. Daughter didn't like...
  8. Oh yeah! I'm a diabetic and people often give me candy. Now technically I can and do eat some candy when I have a hypo. But there is very little I can eat. Like you, I can't have dairy. Yes, there is dark chocolate that doesn't have dairy but if I eat it, I get bad GERD. When we lived in NY we had secret pals. We filled out a paper prior to tell...
  9. We had a neighbor boy who had ADHD. He had to avoid all dyes and sugar. Those things hyped him up.
  10. I think lifestyle applies because it goes beyond diet. At least for us. In our case it wasn't celiac but gluten and wheat intolerance. And if my daughter got those things on her skin, she got a rash. So we had to eliminate them totally from her life.
  11. I think the only cat litter that isn't safe is the Swheat Scoop because it is made with wheat. As for things that *say* they are gluten-free, you still have to read the label and not just the ingredients. Look for things like "made on shared lines with wheat". Or "processed on the same lines with..." You might also see something like, "packaged in the...
  12. Sadly this is not new news. I never take a product at its word if it boasts the gluten-free label. Rice Dream clearly states on the box that they use barley to process it. I have seen other products that claim they are made on shared lines with wheat. That's not good either!
  13. She did a blood test for bees because she said if I were really allergic like I was told that I was, this could cause a deadly reaction. That test came up negative so I had to take a series of stings with needles. I was injected with the venom from various stinging insects. It really hurt! But I wasn't allergic.
  14. Yikes! No, no. You can never do this. Once I got a burger patty to go for my daughter. I told them that I wanted just the patty but they put it on a bun. This was not long after she had been diagnosed. Thinking I could be smart, I took the bun off, rinsed the patty in the sink and reheated it. She got sick as a dog. You also have to ask about fajita...
  15. I have never been tested for celiac and AFAIK, I do not have any gluten issues. My daughter did (doesn't currently) but that's what brought me here. Long story short with her, she was thought to have ADHD by her teachers. But I didn't believe this. After taking her to a variety of Drs., my mom's Naturopath finally said he could test her for food allergies...
  16. Who did you speak to? Chances are that you spoke to two different people. Often if you speak to two different people, you'll get two different answers. If the person I am speaking to doesn't have an answer, I will ask for a supervisor. Not that I can be assured that they have the right answer mind you. Some people will sound authoratative and given you...
  17. This is a recipe that I got elsewhere. It is not my recipe and I saved it as it was written, so forgive the typos. It makes a single serving at a time or a nice hamburger type bun. It is super quick and good! I used to make this and my daughter and I would share one because we can't eat a lot of carbs at one time. "Hi All It's been quite a while...
  18. I always keep stuff in the house to make soup. Back when I could eat chicken, I would use chicken broth, canned chicken, celery, onion, carrot, peas go well with this too, and either some rice or pasta. I can't have chicken now so... I would use either tomato juice or V8 or if I have none in the house then watered down tomato sauce and then whatever veggies...
  19. Oh yes! Last time that I dined at a non Mexican restaurant I asked for a plain baked potato. Apparently to do me a favor or something they put some butter or margarine (not sure which) in a paper cup in my plate, next to the hot baked potato. Some of it had melted out onto the plate. I immediately grabbed the cup up, handed it to the waiter, told him...
  20. Airline meals scare it. I actually haven't flown in many years and hope never to have to again. Due to all the supplements I take, the four prescription meds and four kinds of insulin, flying would be a royal PITA. In the past when I have flown, my breakfasts always seemed to consist of scrambled eggs, some sort of sickly sweet pastry or muffin and...
  21. I actually find that most of the time I can eat pretty well along the road. Of course it was a lot easier for me when I could have dairy. I am fine with eating dry cereal for breakfast. And beans straight from the can with some tortilla chips for lunch. Maybe the same for dinner if need be. Or peanut butter and crackers. Thankfully, gluten isn't an...
  22. True. And in the case of my family it is their choice to eat those foods that they know they should not. Which is fine by me except in the case where I think it caused an anaphylaxic reaction. I was really torn there. Really thought I should take this person to the hospital or dial 911 but she resisted. Other family member denied that it was a reaction...
  23. No because I can't digest steak or most veggies. Actually I don't think we have too many steak houses around here. We did go to Outback but there again, I was stuck with the burger patty and fries and I was not impressed. My daughter had some sort of chicken dish and she didn't like it. It had some sort of cheese sauce something on it. Maybe it was mushrooms...
  24. Yeah, I can't drink. I do have gastroparesis but... I quit going to the support groups for that because I felt out of place. At least I can eat some foods. A lot of the folks there are on feeding tubes. Quite frankly both my daughter and I are starting to get burned out on all foods. If they could just put food in a pill or something, that would make...
  25. Tonight I really wanted to dine out. Because we were out and many miles from home. But my daughter didn't want to dine out. And I hadn't bought any food for the week. My daughter had stomach issues last week so I wasn't sure if she would be eating or not. The Dr. had put her on a liquid diet until things settled down. Daughter wanted to come home and...
