  1. That is pretty much what we do too. If she does eat dinner there, I usually send something for her. She used to have one friend whose household was not only gluten-free but she and her dad shared many of their food intolerances. That mom and I had no problems with the other person preparing food because we didn't even keep stuff in the house that could...
  2. I rarely buy tomato paste. Unless I need a larger amount for a recipe, I just use a tube of stuff imported from Italy. Since I use so little, I usually wind up throwing it out and replacing it every couple of years. I do not buy the tomato products from Trader Joe's or the Walmart brand because they are on shared lines with a lot of things we can't have...
  3. I have heard this flour thing before but I have never seen wheat flour in cheese. I think the kind we have has potato starch or something like that in it. I argued with my mom that it was just cheese, but it isn't. But it also isn't flour. I suppose people might get the idea because it sometimes looks like flour. Perhaps the next time you could ask to...
  4. Gluten isn't my issue but I do have food intolerances and also diabetes. So I just tell people I will take care of my own food. When my daughter was eating gluten-free I only ever once let anyone bake for her. And I didn't really want to do that. My SIL and her sister baked a pie for her. I figured that would be safe since my SIL doesn't generally do...
  5. They need to find the reason for the UTI. Some people have reflux were some of the urine backs up inside of them instead of exiting. This can cause a UTI. In my daughter's case it was not that. It was caffeine! The caffeine was an irritant to her bladder/urethtra. Because it hurt her so much to pee, she wasn't drinking as much liquid as she should be...
  6. Interesting! Thanks!
  7. I have been having annoying problems with my psoriasis. Just a little patch on my forehead that seems to keep moving. One spot will clear up and a new one will pop up right next to it. I have had a little patch going since about March. Somebody told me that I might need to eat more beets. I can't remember exactly why but I love beets! So when I found...
  8. I have been known to bring celery to the theater. I just cut it in thick slices and put it in a bag. It's dark. They just see me eating little pieces of something so they would assume it is popcorn. Actually the big theater here now does have a ton of healthy options. I was really pretty astounded because we hadn't been to the movies in a while. Massively...
  9. I was shocked today at the produce prices. Two weeks ago I bought red bell peppers at Winco which probably has the best prices around. Target is also very good and we normally shop both places. I paid 69 cents per pepper at Winco although most of the peppers were not refrigerated and we really had to pick through them to find 4 good ones. But they were...
  10. The tubes (called chubs) are pink slime. We avoid!
  11. Wow! Food is cheap where you are! I will give you the Safeway prices although they aren't necessarily the cheapest place to buy food here. Nor are they the most expensive place. Organic, boneless, skinless breasts (that's what we buy) are $8.99 a pound. The Foster Farm, boneless, skinless breasts are $7.49 a pound but $4.99 if you have the club card...
  12. I guess overall we didn't really eat a lot of rice. Me being diabetic, I have to watch my carb intake. Daughter had to give up refined things when she went on the South Beach diet. So I switched to brown rice. I bought a huge bag of it at Coscto but we haven't eaten it yet. I have several smaller bags of various brands to eat up first. We never...
  13. I was trying to buy organic foods as much as possible. Unlike some people, I didn't think it was higher in nutrients. Did anyone really think that? I can't see how. But the news and various articles I have read on the subject would make us think so. I just didn't want to be consuming all of those chemicals in my food! But then our finances got tight...
  14. But if you think about it... People who eat gluten-free are not the only ones who eat a lot of rice. It is common in a lot of countries! Mexico, Asian countries, India, Africa, even parts of Italy! Some of those people are eating it not only daily but several times a day!
  15. The thing is... Rice is just what they pointed out to us. How many other things is arsenic in? Well, water. This I know. It's everywhere. But how much is safe to consume? This, we do not know. I was just reading something yesterday. It was called mono eating. And it said that it was a bad thing to do. Basically it was eating the same thing every...
  16. Here's what I do! Go here: Open Original Shared Link Get youself a free account. Then enter in everything you have had to eat and drink in a day, including water. You will need to know your portion sizes so you may have to weigh and measure what you eat. Check each day to see what nutrients you took in and where you are lacking. I do not personally...
  17. The hot dog with no bun and the chips sounds sooo familiar. Actually daughter can't have peanuts so Chik-Filet would be out. Not that we have them here, because we don't. And we always have to check the chips because some can be fried in peanut oil. We do have a Taco Time at our mall. The tacos, beans and rice are safe there. But mostly we try not to...
  18. Mashed potatoes from a box made as directed will contain dairy. You are supposed to put in milk and butter or margarine. Yes, you can get margarine without dairy but most contains it. Some mashed potatoes already have the milk and/or butter right in the mix. So unless the person who made them knew that you couldn't have dairy and actually knew what...
  19. We love minimus. They also have some single serve gluten-free foods. We just get our salads with no dressing and some lemon wedges.
  20. Chips in a restaurant are often not gluten-free. Salsa as you now know can sometimes not be gluten-free. I find that salads are very iffy. I usually don't order them unless the restaurant doesn't use croutons at all. Can't tell you how many times I have found a crouton in the middle or on the bottom and the same for cheese or egg.
  21. I had allergy testing done. No allergies but some OAS. I had the IgG testing done. Eliminated those foods and felt much better. But... It's hard to find someone to do the testing and it's very expensive. My insurance covered the allergy testing but not the IgG.
  22. I don't think all of the Quaker rice cakes are gluten-free. I can't say for sure since we never buy them. Used to be they were not but then they did come out with some gluten-free ones. I would check to see if yours say gluten-free on them.
  23. Very interesting! My daughter had it prior to learning of her thyroid problem.
  24. I had my baby on Cape Cod. I have also lived in CA, PA, NY, KS and here in WA. Now granted we did have a lot of relatives in KS and they would help with the cooking. So that might be the difference. But really I have only ever heard of the food thing online.
  25. I would just tell people not to bring food over at all. Nobody brought me any food after I had my baby. My mom did offer to cook a meal when we first got home. She said she would make anything I wanted. Knowing what a lousy cook my mom is, I bought a jar of cheese sauce and some pasta. Asked her to fix that. I did find that I mainly didn't eat too...
