  1. Any stews and I freeze pork or chicken fried rice. It's yummy, just pack a small bottle of soy sauce, gluten free of course. Also, pancakes freeze well ... but perhaps not a common supper
  2. 'hys' used to be gluten free and my daughter used it all the time. She just bought new bottles without checking the label in the store. IT NOW LISTS WHEAT in the ingredients. So ... check all labels!!! Other than that we don't know of any gluten free teriyaki sauces.
  3. First off, when you go to a new restaurant it is necessary to tell them what you need. And don't worry about your friends and relatives, they know that you need to stay healthy and will learn to actually help you. If they don't, then I would suggest finding friends that care about your health to go out with. You need a restaurant card that spells it out...
  4. I've never used buckwheat flakes, but I don't think there is any reason why they shouldn't work. The flavour of course would be different. How about you trying it and letting us know!
  5. My biggest surprise was some Lemon Tea (herbal) that my mother brought in the house. I never even thought to look at the ingredients ... like you know, there's lemon and tea leaves in the bag. Right? So, after I've been sick for three days and we are going crazy trying to figure out what it was, my Dad was standing at the counter watching TV, and when...
  6. It's also known as Matrimonial cake (sp) although I could never figure out why.
  7. It does, doesn't it? It's great to have all the opinions and experiences of world wide Celiacs
  8. Heavy excercise isn't possible as I spend too much time in the bathroom and nausiated (sp) How ever if I can get out for a walk, it certainly does help. The fresh air, birds, plants etc. takes your mind off it. The dog playing in the snow makes you laugh and lifts the spirits, and I think the walk makes everything pass through quicker. Staying in...
  9. This from a Canadian government site. Question 12: Do vaccines contain toxic ingredients? Answer: The main ingredient in most vaccines is the killed or weakened germ (virus or bacterium), which stimulates our immune system to recognize and prevent future disease. Some newer vaccines are made from only part of the germ's cell (for example, a purified...
  10. Thinking of you Patti! Best wishes for a speedy recovery and by the end of your several weeks, I'm sure the doctor will order ... hubby will be an expert in house keeping
  11. My daughter uses gluten free pretzels smashed up. They love the flavour. I can't get the pretzels here so haven't tried it.
  12. Maltodextrin is also safe in Canada.
  13. Oops ... I'm being really rude today! WELCOME TO THE BOARD!!!
  14. You need to check the herbal teas. I have found both toasted wheat germ and barley in teas. So, check labels. Some mixed spices 'could' contain gluten. Although there are several that are gluten free. McCormick makes gluten free spices and will list anything that isn't. Don't buy spices from bulk bins. In fact ... don't buy anything from bulk bins unless...
  15. Go for it Rusla! Nelson is a beautiful place, and Calgary is much too big now
  16. I think we should stick to the question ... which was, should Celiacs get the flu shot. Not what is in it, or what you 'think' is in it. Or even whom is informed, or mis-informed. Celiacs should get the shot if they are NOT allergic to eggs, they don't want the flu ... having said that, I don't think we are more at risk getting the flu, just that a lot...
  17. This is one of the reasons people insist on getting a firm diagnosis of Celiac Disease. It is an inherited disease and when I got the "paper work" I could say to my mother, brother, daughters etc. that "here it is in black and white" Go and get checked because your children, sister etc. could very well have this if they have symptoms. My daughter did get...
  18. Yes, probably most of us do. You may have been bloated 'retaining water' the first time you were weighed. Other foods besides gluten can and often do cause a bloated look and feeling in many Celiacs.
  19. Yup, with some seashell chocolates. The ingredients were good, but they were formed in a mold which was coated so they come out shiny. They don't put that in the ingredients list
  20. I think the biggest frustration comes from the social aspect of the Diesease. As I pointed out before, every thing in human life revolves around food, and we learn that at a very young age. So ... no going out, and no traveling with the pleasure of cafe's and restaruants is cutting down the social life big time. Especially for a young person. In my...
  21. Don't beat yourself up about feeling sorry for yourself. Believe it or not, that feeling goes along with any cronic disease and it's perfectly natural. I think the reason that newly diagnosed Celiacs feel it so often is that every human activity from birth to death inclusive, revolves around food. Every holiday, special days, or not so special days....
  22. Boy, that's tough when you get sick over the holidays and you are the one hosting some of it. There's not much that you can do that will help, except of course the Immodium and Pepto. This disease is really hard on you young people that are still on the dating scene. Perhaps you need to find a nice Celiac girl Hope you are feeling better soon...
  23. Hi Laura My dog is on a gluten free diet as well. She gets loose bowels on the other food. I have her on a gluten free Solid Gold called 'over the moon'. It is expensive though, thankfully my dog isn't that big. I hate walking through a super market bakery area! I always imagine all that flour dust.
  24. I am so sorry, that really is very sad. Bleeding in the stool could also be sign of a bleeding ulcer. Is his medical team aware of this problem?
  25. Angie, thanks for letting us know! I've been afraid to try freezing it. It would be great to freeze mac and cheese etc. in meal portions for a quick lunch or supper after being in town all day. That's great news!
