  1. Jess I would guess that your highest risk of exposure was while the product was on your hair. There might also be residue that could come off (like conditioner) for the first couple of shampoos. but once you are using your regular shampoo, I wouldn't think there would be much residue left (The color isn't coming off, right?). That's just my guess...
  2. I KNOW I have found barley grains in a bag of dried red lentils (threw the soup out, didn't use the rest of the bag). I know that farmers can rotate different crops on to their fields, and there could be cross contamination through equipment, etc. It may depend on the variety of lentils, where they are grown, and the company that processes them. If you...
  3. Wow, you really are in uncharted territory with this. I tried a google for dairy-free yogurt, and only found soy alternatives. since you can culture soy, it might be a reasonable leap that you can culture other beverages. I'm not really up on the science behind this, and what makes it thicken up. Give it a try - and you can become the resident expert...
  4. My oldest daughter (now 15) was the CUTEST, SWEETEST child EVER - until she turned 2 1/2... I was pregnant with our second, and dear daughter turned into daughter dearest. I was working full time, and looking forward to maternity leave with her and the new baby, and suddenly I didn't think I was going to be able to handle it. Even the simplest things...
  5. I noticed on another thread where people were discussing the "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" book, and diet. Do you have recipes from that book? they use nut meal flours. Also they use honey, but you could probably substitute something suitable there. I think I have the book - if you want I could send you a couple of those recipes. Debbie
  6. Since you have been gluten free for so long, it is disturbing that you have not stabilized. The first thing I would think of is other intolerances are still bothering you. I see that you are aware of several other intolerances that you have, so you are looking for those as well. Is it possible that you are still getting contamination from food or other...
  7. courtesy of Google: Open Original Shared Link I also found how to make a Gelatin Volcano in a bread pan... Gotta love the internet! So, I would say it will increase moisture, and gumminess. I think in gluten-free bread it is used to add gumminess that is missing from gluten. But if you have too much from your other products, try...
  8. I have never used gum in my cake/cookie baking, and usually get excellent results. I only use gum in yeast bread. However, I do generally use a blend of rice, tapioca and soy flours, so I think the tapioca provides some of the gumminess that holds things together. In my earliest attempts at gluten-free baking (in the dark ages, before much of anything...
  9. Hi, I'm not familiar with that specific recipe. Converting recipes is kind of an unknown science Are the cookies thin because they aren't holding their shape and spreading out too much? I convert a lot of my old regular recipes, and find that some work very well, and other just don't work, no matter what I try. I usually substitute the regular...
  10. Have you been able to locate The Wizard's Organic Wheat free Vegan Worchestershire Sauce, made by Edward and Son's? It's made in USA, but distributed directly from the US manufacturer. When I get it from my local health food store it has a sticky label with the french version of the ingredients . Debbie
  11. lol!! So what were the ingredients in the actual roast beef part? Uh - roast beef? It's all the things that AREN"T roast beef that we care about! This would be funny if it weren't so hazardous to our health. Ah, yes - the words I fear the most - "New and Improved". What is so improved about sticking some gluten in something that...
  12. I also avoid corn, and yep, it's in everything. I was at a web site sponsored by corn producers, and it is truly mind-boggling to realize how many products have corn in them. Their "education" page is titled "A Zillion Uses for Corn!" For me, my reaction is debilitating enough, that I avoid it as diligently as I avoid gluten. If I were to eat corn...
  13. Hi, Has anyone found a gluten-free and Corn Free Icing Sugar? It seems that any I find which are labelled gluten-free use corn starch. It's kind of a "luxury" item, but it would be nice to have icing without needing to powder the sugar myself. Thanks, Debbie
  14. Jerry - I was at my local spring garden show this weekend, and I thought of you . They have a new product on display called "Synlawn" - it's synthetic turf, in various varieties and lengths. Hey, no more hours of mowing the lawn!! Just think of what you could do in your spare time... Debbie
  15. I'm in Canada, and I travel to the US for business a couple times a year. (no language issues to deal with , but customs and airlines, anyways) I believe the main food items you can't take between US and Canada are fresh produce, dairy, and meat. I travel with pre-packaged dried fruit and nut bars, "Enjoy Foods" snack bars, and rice crackers in my...
  16. Just a note - there can be CORN products in eye care solutions. You'd almost think there would be no reason to have corn in your eye care products, but they've found a reason. I found the following information about what sorbitol is used for, and where it comes from: Sorbitol (a natural ingredient that attracts moisture) that locks in moisture and helps...
  17. Yes, rice bakes quite nicely. I have this recipe for a flavorful baked rice. Use the 2:1 ratio for liquid to rice. saute some minced garlic, onion, green pepper, and herbs (to taste, depending on what you are serving it with) in butter or olive oil. once the onion is soft, add your quantity of uncooked rice. stir and saute until the rice starts to...
  18. I think it would be a difficult situation if the restaurant did not have a menu option to accommodate you. But since they do, it would really be a shame to go there and be served something you can't eat, when there is good stuff in the kitchen!! As well, the hostess would probably much rather pay for a meal that you can eat, instead of one that will go...
  19. I grew up on a farm, and mom had broiler chickens and laying hens. Yep, they are dumb!! (apologies to all the chicken lovers ) My food policy is much like Carla's. I make a meal, and that's what it is. But I have to say, I think a lot has to do with the kids. I don't think mine are naturally picky eaters, and even if they fuss about something, it...
  20. I also use this method. 2 to 1 water to rice. I add a touch of butter to the water once it boils, then add the rice, stir, cover, and turn down the heat. I find the secret is DON'T PEAK! Leave the lid on for the allocated time, don't stir, don't even lift the lid . Debbie
  21. I use "The Wizard's" Organic Wheat-free Vegan Worchestershire sauce (made by Edward and Sons). Their site says it's gluten-free. Debbie
  22. Here is one of my family's favorites. It's quick to prepare, so it's easy for after work. Pepper Steak or Chicken This one really works equally well for steak or chicken breast. (Use quantity of meat to suit number of servings required) Cut meat into strips, and marinade in a little gluten-free worchestershire and red wine vinegar while you prep...
  23. Well, as you buy several different kinds of gluten-free bread, looking for one that appeals to your husband... You will have LOTS of material for making bread crumbs!! I think you can continue to use a lot of your regular ways of cooking, and spicing things, just read ingredients carefully, to find brands that are gluten-free. I use a lot of fresh...
  24. Glad to hear that you got your laminate done, and that it turned out well. My butt and knees really hurt after we did Mom's last month - I out of shape for crawling around on my hands and knees! I really enjoy a new race season when things have been shaken up so much. Good to see a rookie on the podium in his first race! There was a little bit of...
  25. Lisa, Those are fantastic! What a herd! Looks like they appreciate the round bales! Debbie
