ARCHIVED Scared And Sad And...relieved
TrillumHunter replied to CDeeR's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It will be okay. You can do this! There will be great things to come out of it, and new challenges to face. This board is a great resource! Best advice I ever got? Eat very simply the next few MONTHS to allow your insides to heal. Eat single ingredient, home-cooked meals that you can assure are gluten-free. Avoid rushing out to buy every gluten-free... -
Most people I know has a loading dose like I did initially. Once a week for six weeks and then tapering down. I have one every three months now. Don't you know someone who is an RN/LPN? They could easily give you the injection--it's not rocket science. You can even train someone around your house to do it for you--even yourself! You can get the syringes...

ARCHIVED Betty Crocker gluten-free Yellow Cake Mix
TrillumHunter posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I made some cupcakes today and when I bit into one--YOWEE! It was a very hard half-kernel of rice. I guess it made it through the milling process. Should I call Betty Crocker and tell them? -
ARCHIVED Another Baking In School Question
TrillumHunter replied to crittermom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
She may want to really think this over more. All those food issues! Not to mention the finger-licking and nose picking during cold and flu season. Blech! Baking is best done at home where you can keep your cooties in your family. A cute alternate gingerbread man craft is to cut the man from dark brown felt and allow the kids to decorate with bits... -
ARCHIVED I Lost It At A Luncheon Yesterday!
TrillumHunter replied to Wolicki's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For all the times you sucked it up, you earned this one. I hope that this spread was at least artfully arranged. It's fall. How about a big slice of pumpkin cheesecake and a spiked hot coffee? -
What do you like to eat? Tell us a few things and we can help you out better. Tell us things you liked even before you went gluten-free. We have times of the year when things are crazy and I still get dinner out for us. A slow cooker would be a great thing for you. With Christmas sales, you could find one cheap. Or, that is something you could pick...

ARCHIVED gluten-free Thanksgiving Dinner Out
TrillumHunter replied to Mom of a Celiac toddler's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I would think he's barely going to eat anything anyway. Why not just bring his food? They probably don't even charge for that age. Optimisticmom, you can have the gene and not have any trouble with gluten. It's only when the gene gets activated and becomes celiac that it's a problem. LOTS of people have the gene. -
ARCHIVED Not Happy With Blood Test Results
TrillumHunter replied to SLB5757's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have you give the gluten-free diet a try to see if it helps? If it does, you've got your answer. You don't need anyone's permission to eat gluten-free. It doesn't require a diagnosis. Lots of folks on this board have discovered that is what is best for them and they just do it! You can do this, too! It is possible to have intestinal damage consistent... -
ARCHIVED When Should I Get My Girls Tested?
TrillumHunter replied to L13's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yes, they should be tested now. It's much better to find this early so as to better protect their adult health. All your first degree relatives should be tested. Your insurance should cover it. -
I was so low I did a loading dose to begin with. Once a week for two months, once every two, and so on. After about six months, it was as good as it was going to get. I did feel better after a month. Are you seeing a neurologist?

Are you supplementing with folic acid? B12 and folic acid work together, but it's sort of a balancing act. Folic acid is usually easy to get, but most gluten-free baked goods, especially homemade, aren't fortified. It's easy to have your folate level drawn. 575 is just mid-range. That's not high enough for me. I have symptoms at that level. 80...

It's called Schilling's test. You have drink with b12 that's labeled with a traceable additive. You collect your urine for 24 hours and they look to see how much is absorbed. It's not done commonly because of the cost and because it is so easy to supplement safely. "Sprue" is listed as one of the cause for pernicious anemia. For some of us, it's because...

ARCHIVED Xantham Gum
TrillumHunter replied to Captin Cook's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Xantham serves a very specific purpose it gluten-free baking. It makes the dough have a cohesive quality that is missing without gluten. Guar gum is the next best thing, but it takes more of it and it is pricey as well. I can't tolerate guar gum. Most recipes call for only a couple of teaspoons of xantham. It lasts a long time for me and I bake almost... -
ARCHIVED Baking / Teachers And School
TrillumHunter replied to seezee's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
She'll never take the money. She will be embarrassed that she made such a big deal about it. -
ARCHIVED Baking / Teachers And School
TrillumHunter replied to seezee's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Your daughter did tell her. She refused to eat what she knew would be unsafe for her. I say bravo to your kid! She stood up to an obviously pushy and overbearing authority figure. What an awesome strong girl you are raising! Can you give the teacher the money for the flour? Tell her that your sorry she felt the need to override your dr's orders. Tell... -
ARCHIVED Dietician Said Not To Go Gluten Free If Negative Results
TrillumHunter replied to Harley0000's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
As long as I'm the primary shopper and cook, everyone who eats here will eat gluten-free. My husband had a negative blood work but is gluten-free. He's seen a drop in migraines that makes it worth it. He's eaten gluten out at work and it always triggers a migraine. A gluten-free diet can be healthy or not. There's plenty of gluten-free junk food. -
I'm going on Monday to have the labs done to see how well my second round did. After the first round my level went from 4 to 44, but that is still on the low side. We are looking for mid to high because I have very heavy cycles. I get 62.5mg of Ferrlecit every week for 6-8 weeks in a row. I've done this twice. I'm hoping not to do it again, but...

ARCHIVED I Fell Off The Diet--
TrillumHunter replied to Imanistj's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There is no way your doctor, by way of endoscopy and biopsy, can say you don't have ANY damage. It isn't possible to biopsy the entire small bowel. It is possible to have patches of damage that cannot be seen with the eye and only reveal themselves with biopsy. You have celiac. You have celiac. As difficult as it is for you, this is your reality.... -

ARCHIVED 1st Loaf Of gluten-free Bread
TrillumHunter replied to twe0708's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I wet a small silicon scraper and smooth down the top before it rises. It makes it look nicer and the slices are more even. The bread looks great! -
ARCHIVED Feeling Extremely Frustrated
TrillumHunter replied to stickymommy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Did you cut out gluten for any length of time? If so, it can take a while of eating gluten again before you will test positive. If your dd has never be gluten-free, why not test her? That might answer your question as well. Just a thought. Good luck and remember you have the greatest interest in your good health. -
ARCHIVED Gi Appointment Scheduled - Woot!
TrillumHunter replied to chilligirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your positive attitude is great! Most any question you have about the endoscopy can be answered here. Keep in mind, the endoscopy isn't perfect and misses some cases. If this happens to you, remember you don't need permission to go gluten-free. The waiting is always tough. -
I'm looking for resources to teach me how to do this. TIA!

ARCHIVED Another 5 Star Meal For Me Tonight
TrillumHunter replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, Jason, please see someone about this! This isn't about having celiac anymore, it's bigger than that for you. The negatives NEVER go away, that's life and living! But each of has to learn how to deal with them and make things good for ourselves. You can get help to find out how to do this. It isn't necessary for you to do it alone. I didn't! ...
