  1. If you seem to be tolerating the yogurt okay then you could stay with it. Just make sure it is gluten free. You could go with a plain yogurt if you want to avoid the sugars. It sounds like many of your symptoms are neuro related and those can take some time to resolve. I found sublingual B12 to be helpful. I do think you are wise to go with more 'all natural...
  2. I found them quite helpful in helping to identify my soy and casien intolerance 5 years after my celiac diagnosis as well as identifying the genes I carry (my main reason for testing). I did seem to have the casien resolve after I had been soy and casien free for a while but soy is still a big issue for me.
  3. Can you get into see a GP or go to an Urgent Care Clinic where they can see you sooner? It would be a good idea to try and get into one or the other and sometimes if another doctor calls the GI can get you in much sooner. Feeling weak and lightheaded can be part of a gluten reaction for some of us but with the bleeding you don't want to just assume it is...
  4. You will get your life back. It has only been a week and it can take some time to heal. Be sure to check any meds you take with the maker and if you take supplements be sure to read all ingredients as they can be labeled gluten free but still have wheat or barley grass and those are not something you want. Hang in there, I know it is rough right now and...
  5. The best way to handle the cravings is to keep 'treats' that are safe on hand. My go to is chocolate. If you give in to the cravings for gluten they may continue as gluten can be an addictive substance for us. Just as an alcoholic can not have 'just one drink' safely or an exsmoker can not have 'just one cig' we can not have 'just one gluten treat'. Try to...
  6. I doubt it especially if there are other members of the family that have celiac. I believe the mechanism for malnutrition with alcoholism is different. Being an alcoholic will not cause the antigliadin antibodies although both could cause similiar malabsorption problems. What I meant is that because celiacs can have an addictive effect with gluten the addiction...
  7. The best one to answer that question is going to be a nurse at the office or your doctor. Give them a call and ask. Do also let them know if you have been eating a diet that is very low in fat.
  8. Growing other items in the field shouldn't be an issue but I would discourage growing wheat with them. There are folks that have had problems living in areas where wheat is growing in fields around them when it is harvested. The dust from the harvesting can be an issue when it is breathed in. If they want to grow a grain type crop Buckwheat is a good suggestion...
  9. Sure does sound familiar. Since you are done with testing you can start the diet. There is a chance of a false negative on the blood work so if the results do come back negative you would need to do a diet trial anyway. Might as well start now so you can start to heal. Go with mostly unprocessed whole foods and do keep in mind it can take some time to heal...
  10. Don't beat yourself up about it. As another poster said try to be prepared by keeping a 'goodie' bag with you so you don't fall to temptation when you are very hungrey. I hope your feeling better soon.
  11. Wow that is quite an ingredient list. You could be reacting to the soy, the sulfites, the dairy or any number of those ingredients. Can you go with whole foods for a bit instead of stuff so heavily processed? That is going to help you heal faster and once you have been feeling better for a few weeks you can add in the heavily processed stuff one item at a...
  12. If your blood tests are positive some doctors will diagnose based on that and response to the diet since there is a risk of false negatives with both blood and biopsy. Some people would rather not have a preexisting condition in their insurance files so they chose not to do an 'official' diagnosis. Some folks also need to have the 'official' diagnosis to...
  13. Did he biopsy the lesions or the area next to them? Also I have heard that if you are gluten free the biopsies will be a false negative, have you been gluten free?
  14. Cookware that is scratched or items made of a porous material like wood or cast iron should be replaced. If you have a cast iron skillet that you love you can put it in a selfcleaning oven and set the oven on the 'clean' then scrub well and reseason. You also need to get a new dedicated toaster and strainers. Since you are very new to the diet it is quite...
  15. Since you have had all the tests done go ahead and go strictly gluten free. You don't have to wait on the test results and there is a chance of a false negative so no matter what the results are you need to try the diet.
  16. To have the best chance of an accurate test you need to be eating at least 4 to 6 slices of bread a day for about 3 months. You may still have a false negative. Once testing is done then go strictly gluten free for a couple of months. Since gluten intolerance and celiac are autoimmune reactions you really need to totally eliminate it to stop the antibodies...
  17. While there are lists of the copious names that gluten can be identified by it is often easier just to find out the companies that will clearly label it. My favorite is Garneir, I use their skin and hair products and if gluten is in something it will be clearly listed. Suave and Dove are also good about labeling. For Organics there is a newer company called...
  18. You must be so hurt and disappointed with the way things are going right now. Sometimes family just doesn't really understand and there isn't much you can do about it. Would it help if your husband stresses to them that right now, as much as you would like to go, you are just too sick? I know from my own experience how much it hurts to not be able to go...
  19. Don't panic. It is going to be life changing but in a good way. Read as much as you can here and ask any questions you need to. Some of us do go through withdrawl so if your a bit moodier than usual that is normal. If you have any favorite foods that are gluten filled do ask and likely someone will know of a replacement. Your not alone there are a lot of...
  20. Different labs use different parameters. He is definately IGA deficient as he is below the levels that lab uses. As mentioned that means any IGA celiac testing is going to be invalid. When you are done with all testing do give the family a good strict trial of the diet.
  21. If I am reading this right you had the blood test and it was postive for celiac? There are doctors who will now diagnose based on positive blood tests since the endos have a high rate of false negatives, and well the blood test does also, so if you do have a positive blood test you can be fairly certain that you have celiac. If they are just doing the standard...
  22. I do think it is fairly rare and most times I think it is the result of hemmies. I had pretty severe bleeding for about 3 days after a second gluten challenge was demanded by my ex-GI doctor. A good glutening will still cause a small amount of bleeding for me but it is barely noticeable. While it is IMHO not likely that it is something serious it should still...
  23. Are you talking about Enterolab stool testing or the type you have done at a GI doctors? Enterolab may be able to pick up antigliadin antibodies if you haven't been gluten free for too long. You could contact their office to find out what they think about the length of time you have been gluten free. The stool samples that are done by a GI doctor are usually...
  24. Have you ever had any scopes done or been seen by a GI doctor?
  25. You need to see a doctor today to be on the safe side. While some can have bleeding with a glutening it is not a usual symptom and the bleeding is not usually severe. If the bleeding is constant, in other words you are bleeding even when not passing stool, or you are feeling weak and the pain is severe go to the ER.
