ARCHIVED Talking To University Department
ravenwoodglass replied to Googles's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Celiac is covered under the ADA. Legally they have to either comply with your request or let you opt out of the meal plan. -
ARCHIVED Seeing New Gastro Tomorrow--need Advice
ravenwoodglass replied to mom26boys's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
What you are doing is repeated gluten challenges and it seems each time the result is positive for your body not wanting gluten. No matter what the doctor says IMHO your body is giving you the answer. -
Although for most of us distilled gluten grains are safe there is a small portion of us that will react. If someone wants to figure it out for their own body the best way I have found is to puposely consume a distilled gluten grain for a week while consuming nothing else that has a risk and watch for a reaction.

I am so sorry this is happening to you. It could still be the Jordan almonds but I suspect that the snacks are either not gluten free or that they are heavily cross contaminated. Have you called the maker of the snacks to verify that they are gluten free? Even if they are gluten free by ingredients the plant they are made in may use powdered gluten ingredients... -
ARCHIVED Had Stressful Evening
ravenwoodglass replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Your waiter was a jerk. If you ordered off the gluten-free menu and he wrote the ticket correctly then it would have been made with gluten-free soy sauce. All he had to do was walk into the kitchen and verify that it was if there was any doubt. I wouldn't give up on the restaurant just because of one bad server. Next time you go ask to see the ticket... -
ARCHIVED Seeing New Gastro Tomorrow--need Advice
ravenwoodglass replied to mom26boys's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Try to think positively if you can. Not all doctors are clueless about celiac and the fact that not all of us are rail thin. You may luck out this time. Bring copies of your test results with you. If you had vitamin and mineral panels done and or tests for anemia bring those also. If you didn't have those done then ask if he will do them. Bring a list... -

ARCHIVED Update
ravenwoodglass replied to boysmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The flattened folds in the duodenum are a sign of celiac but not all doctors are aware of that. Even if the doctor says the tests were negative do try the diet. Since you are done with testing you can start today. -
I am so sorry. The grief you are feeling is normal but it is I know very very hard. I also live a life where my only freinds are four legged and it is so very hard to lose them. It seems so unfair that they have to go before we do. He was very lucky to have a person like you to love and care for him. There is no replacing him but could you perhaps adopt...

ARCHIVED Tested Positive But Have 0 Symptoms
ravenwoodglass replied to Trymester's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had mine done in 2002. Things must have changed since then. I think it ridiculous that folks can no longer get testing form them here. -
ARCHIVED Zyrtec
ravenwoodglass replied to glutengal's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
One way I have found to get what seems to be a better answer from companies about drugs is I tell them I am allergic to wheat. I ask if wheat or any of it's chemical derivities is in the item. I don't ask if the item is gluten free mainly because in some places wheat starch can be considered gluten free through processing. I figure the likelyhood of rye... -
ARCHIVED Wax On Fruit And Veggies
ravenwoodglass replied to nauseatingnancy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have to agree with this. I was 'end stage' when diagnosed, many of my organs were effected and I was clearly getting closer and closer to death. The end stage may refer to the total destruction of the villi and may also refer to those of us who have had multiple organ impact that has become severe enough to be life threatening if not diagnosed. -
ARCHIVED Can't Get Gi's Office To Respond - Need Advice
ravenwoodglass replied to alcie27's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If your GI is local to you I would suggest you go park yourself in the office until someone gives you an answer. That said there are false negatives with both blood and biopsies and if you can't get an answer I would go ahead with the endo and see if they can draw the blood the same day. Do make sure to stress that you want at least 6 biopsies taken. After... -
ARCHIVED Newbie- Doing Gluten Challenge
ravenwoodglass replied to beanbird's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I really hate to have to say this but if you are going to get a doctor derived diagnosis you need to keep up the challenge for at least 6 weeks. Although I think your body has already given you the answer. -
ARCHIVED Spleen Inflammation With Accidental Gluten?
ravenwoodglass replied to beelzebubble's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If the pain goes away when you eat I wonder if it is stomach pain from perhaps excess acid with no food to digest. Have you tried eating more frequently with smaller meals? -
I would get a small empty bottle, like ones for traveling, and fill it with a soap you know is safe. Or if you use a bar soap you can get a case for it also. Use that when you need to use a public restroom. If this doesn't clear up soon you should have a doctor evalutate it. The blisters you are speaking of do sound like DH, but the swelling is a concern...

ARCHIVED gluten-free Experiment
ravenwoodglass replied to Mootana's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes withdrawl is a strong indication that whatever you are suffering symptoms from is something your body may not want or has become addicted to. In some celiac's the brain is strongly effected and when eating gluten it releases chemicals that are trying to counteract the poison. It can be strongly addictive for some. IMHO you should keep going with the... -
ARCHIVED Tested Positive But Have 0 Symptoms
ravenwoodglass replied to Trymester's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just wondering why you have to wait until you are out of NY, I live in NY and had no problem with getting the tests done. I simply contacted Enterolab and they sent me the kit, I sent it in and got my results within a couple of weeks. It wasn't covered by insurance but it was still possible to test. -
ARCHIVED New Here And Going Through Changes...
ravenwoodglass replied to TammyJean's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You really need to drop the milk for now. There are some good subs for it that are really going to be a lot better for you, at least until you heal. I personally would not switch to soy, go with a safe rice milk, NOT Rice Dream, Pacific brands is safe as is the Wegmans brand. Almond or hemp milk are also good choices. You could have casien intolerance... -
ARCHIVED Constipation And Fever
ravenwoodglass replied to glutengal's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If your fever continues to climb and gets to 102 or so you may want to check with your doctor. How much pain are you in? If you are getting a great deal of abdominal pain that would be another reason to contact your doctor. Are you sticking to whole unprocessed foods? That is going to be best at the beginning. It will lesson the chance of CC. It does... -
ARCHIVED Clarinex - Told Not Guaranteed gluten-free-do You Take It?
ravenwoodglass replied to chiroptera's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I would stop taking it and then after my symptoms had resolved try it again. If the same 'I been got' feeling happened it would then go into the trash. Why the FDA allows gluten ingreidents in any med is beyond me. I hope they wise up soon. -
Is there actual pus coming from these blisters? If there is you need to get it looked at asap. Is this finger on the hand that is swollen and inflamed? If you answer yes then I would urge you very strongly to get this looked at. It could be celiac related but it could be something else. If you are using any hand lotions or hand sanitizers stop until you...

ARCHIVED New Here And Going Through Changes...
ravenwoodglass replied to TammyJean's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have experienced the horrible pain that you are going through. The most helpful thing for me was name brand Pepto Bismal Liquid. It would stop the pain within a few minutes. Hopefully your freind has told you of the dangers of crosscontamination and has told you what kitchen items you can still use and what you need to toss or donate. Just in case she... -
ARCHIVED Bbq Sauce
ravenwoodglass replied to LuvMoosic4life's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If wheat is listed as an ingredient then it is indeed not gluten free. If it says it is produced in a plant that also produces items with wheat etc... then that is a warning that there may be a CC issue with the item. Some of us will avoid, others will risk it. It is a personal choice how much risk you choose to take. I personally don't buy items with... -
ARCHIVED Tested Positive But Have 0 Symptoms
ravenwoodglass replied to Trymester's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
In my opinion yes. Enterolab cannot diagnose you with celiac officially but they can tell you if you are making antibodies. If you are making antibodies to something your body doesn't want it. Celiac generally has a 'trigger', it usually appears after an emotional or physical stress. In women a lot of times pregnacy and delivery will trigger it but a...
