  1. Did he take any biopsies of the small intestine? When he said the lining was flat was he just talking about the stomach or was he talking about the small intestine? I am pretty sure that would be indicitive of celiac. No matter what the results of the blood test are you should give the diet a try when all the tests are over.
  2. One last thing on the genetic testing. In the US there are only two out of 9 celiac related genes that are tested for. While the majority of celiacs do have DQ2 or DQ8 there are celiacs who carry genes that are recognized in other countries but not here. The genetic tests are one of the tools for diagnosis but they can not for sure tell you that you do...
  3. "My question is: Can someone develop a wheat intolerance simply by not eating wheat regularly?" No, what has likely occured is that she was having a low level reaction before but her symptoms may have been sporatic or attributed to something else. What she has done by eliminating it and then eating it again is a challenge. And her challenge is positive...
  4. Have all your meds been checked for gluten? Do you work around it? Have you eliminated it from toiletries etc? Do you often eat out? Do you live in a house with other who are not gluten free?
  5. There are some gluten free breads that are okay. Kinnickkinick makes bread that does have much the same texture as regular bread and they also make doughnuts, hamburger and hot dog buns and pizza shells. Their only drawback is they need to be frozen and then toaster or microwaved before use. The gluten free pantry mix mentioned in another reply also...
  6. Those are posititve test results. If you are going to have and endo done make sure you keep eating gluten until that test is over.
  7. Yes there often is withdrawl period. For me it lasted about 5 days or so and boy was I a moody mess. I woke up one morning and it was over.
  8. We have about 22 ft of small intestine, the damage from celiac can be patchy and first and sometimes an area that is not effected is biopsied. One reason a lot of biopsies should be taken. Also there are changes that are seen before the villi are totally destroyed that are sometimes not taken into account. In addition for some of us, the best example would...
  9. Welcome to the board. You do sound like you could be one of us. Yes celiac does require a trigger and emotional as well as physical stress like an illness or in women childbirth can trigger it. I can't answer about the particular lab your tests are going to but there is a chance of a false negative with blood screening. Even if tests are negative after...
  10. More often than I care to admit at this stage of the game. Seriously though, it is usually when I am careless in reading a package, want an item so bad that I don't check on 'natural flavors' before I eat it or when I eat something that is 'processed on a shared line with...' (those don't get me all the time so it's like playing roulette). So a lot...
  11. It is not nuts at all. It is tough to eat gluten free even in the regular world and in the field or a war zone it would be a risk not only to the celiac but to the whole platoon if the celiac was to be glutened. Not only would the D be a problem but also celiac can effect every system in the body including the brain. My DS was an undiagnosed celiac when...
  12. First off celiac is not an allergy and won't show up on an allergy panel. It is an intolerance and an autoimmune disorder. While you are still eating gluten foods you need to get a celiac panel done, your regular doctor can order one. As to the allergy issues. Celiac can cause the immune system to go into hyperdrive and make you show up as 'allergic'...
  13. It is actually the same company and the second rep pulled up both policies and compared them side by side. I think the difference in the rates were because they reran a credit check and my credit rating has improved substantially. They don't run them routinely at each renewal so my old rate may have had a lot to do with my less than perfect credit rating...
  14. As long as you wash the produce before use they should be fine. One thing to be careful of though is breathing in dust from the wheat when he harvests it. You must have a really big garden!
  15. Only a very, very small number of us would react to a level that low. I would continue to enjoy them but if you start having issues then stop for a while and then try them again and see if the same thing happens. Most of us would have no problems with them.
  16. You can just get the biopsy, if your insurance will cover it, but there is a risk of false negative there also. In addition if you have been seeing the same doctor for a bit who is aware of your issues it is possible that if you follow the diet and those issues resolve he may be able to base a diagnosis of gluten intolerance on that recovery. You should...
  17. The rate of false negatives in young children is high. For that reason in countries that screen routinely they wait until age four to do so and then they test again at puberty if the child has no symptoms. Is she is gluten free because your home is gluten free or is she gluten free because she developed issues when you added gluten in previously?
  18. I believe you and it sounds like a doctor who is willing to learn. Good for him. My GI did the same when I was finally diagnosed as he didn't even consider doing an endo because my blood work was negative. It is nice when doctors are willing to admit they are human.
  19. Celiac can also cause inflammation before the villi are destroyed. I would give the diet a shot even if the blood work is negative. Below is a quote from the article that you were given a link to. Since it is considered an immune system problem it sure couldn't hurt to give the diet a try. "Several theories exist about what causes Crohn’s disease, ...
  20. The doctor said it was a reaction of the sympathetic nervous system to the surgery. My knee worked great but the pain from the RSD and the loss of muscle mass in the leg were shocking to the doctor. My leg looked normal before the surgery but when I had the stitches removed just a week or so later my leg looked like a stick. Fortunately with PT and meds...
  21. Are the bumps you got itchy? If so they may be DH if you can get into a dermatologist they can do a biopsy of the tissue next to the lesions to see if it is DH. A diagnosis of DH is a diagnosis of celiac. Also if you live in an area that has a Wegmans grocery store they label really well as far as gluten goes. If it has a circle G it is safe to eat. Listen...
  22. Suave and Dove will clearly label gluten ingredients. There are gluten free cosmetics also available. Giovannni products are organic and all the shampoos and condiitoners are safe as well as many of their skin care products. Most of the Burt's bees products are also safe, I use their styling gel. Many of us do react to gluten in toiletries and IMHO before...
  23. If you developed celiac recently you may not have enough antibodies built up yet and there is also the possibility of a false negative even when we are very ill for a long time. Do go ahead and give the diet a try after they have done the endoscopy. If you are not having an endo done, and sometimes they won't do them with a neg blood result, do give the...
  24. I recently had a renewel notice from my insurance company that raised my rates substantially for no reason. I live in NY and we already have some of the highest rates in the nation thanks to NYC. I decided to call and see if I raised my deductable if that would help lower the cost. Boy did I get a shock! They decided to see if rewritting my policy would...
  25. Labeling laws for supplements and scripts are very lax when it comes to gluten. Please make sure you are checking with the makers and your pharmacist to be absolutely sure they are really gluten free as you doctor will have no idea if they are or not.
