ARCHIVED What Is The Normal Range For Endomysial Antibody?
ravenwoodglass replied to stolly's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This will vary by lab. What you can do is ask your doctor for a copy of the lab reports, it will give you the ranges. With celiac panels though a positive is a positive. I am glad your doctor advised the diet. I hate it when I see doctors say to just continue to eat gluten and they will rebiopsy in a year to see if it is celiac 'yet'. Chances are very... -
ARCHIVED Virus Or Glutening
ravenwoodglass replied to mmcdaniels's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Has the D resolved? Make sure you keep him well hydrated. Could someone have given him black licorice? That would cause allover green BM's and I still haven't found one that is gluten-free other than some brands of jelly beans. If you are seeing green in only mucousy streaks you should call your doctor. You should also call the doctor if he is pale, in... -
ARCHIVED Tests...
ravenwoodglass replied to CJS's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You could also go with Enterolab. They test for antibodies and the tests can be done up to a year after you stop consuming the toxin. They do not diagnose celiac but they can tell you if your body is forming antibodies to gluten. IMHO that is diagnostic, you wouldn't be forming antibodies if your body wasn't seeing gluten as something it doesn't want. -
I found this site this morning. It is an online form for reporting problems with drugs and supplement adverse reactions. I thought others might find it useful for reporting problems with finding gluten in our scripts and supplements, especially the scripts. I suspect that many times the adverse reactions seem to many meds, the psychotropics in particular...

ARCHIVED Diagnosis Based On Positive Dietary Response?
ravenwoodglass replied to jbronwynne's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You have a great doctor there who is more interested in your health than in running up a tab looking for anything but celiac. That doctor is a keeper, wish there were like him/her. -
ARCHIVED Feeling Waaaayyyyy Guilty!?
ravenwoodglass replied to sharps45's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is hard to deal with the guilt, even when we KNOW that we have no control over our genes. I went through years of telling the doctors that something was wrong with my children, but I was so sick they attributed everything to the kids dealing with my illness. I watched my kids stop growing, become so moody that they withdrew from all friends, watched... -
ARCHIVED Gluten In Toothpaste
ravenwoodglass replied to mama2two's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for the reply. Curiosity is my middle name. By the way soy was the last link for me. I hope eliminating it gives you the relief I got. I do find it just as hard to avoid as gluten though, actually at this point harder. It seems anything that doesn't have gluten has soy. -
The same villi that are damaged by celiac are responsible for producing the enzyme that allows us to digest milk sugar, lactose. For many it is essential to heal completely that they drop dairy out for a while. There are some of us who are intolerant to the protein in dairy, casien, for those of us the intolerance is most likely permanent. Those who are...

ARCHIVED Had My First Acupuncture Appointment Today
ravenwoodglass replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had acupuncture before I was diagnosed to help deal with the pain. I have livedo reticularis, made me covered in purple blotches, these would disappear completely on the table. It astounded even the practitioner. It definately helped me a great deal. I also found a good tummy 'remedy' for both D and C while doing some research on chinese food therapy... -
ARCHIVED Gluten In Toothpaste
ravenwoodglass replied to mama2two's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What is the problem with Carrageenan? I use Tom's every day and like the fact that they not only tell you what is in it but also what it is derived from. The Carrageenan says it is derived from seaweed. What is the issue with this, if you don't mind my asking? -
ARCHIVED The Safety Of Eating Gluten Free Barley
ravenwoodglass replied to sandpiper's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There is no such thing as gluten free barley as far as I know or have heard. Are you thinking of stuff like the cookies that say wheat free on the label but contain a warning that they have barley? I have never heard of any company stating that a barley product is gluten free, wheat free yes. Even small amounts of barley, such as in cereals, is enough... -
ARCHIVED Family History, Testing And Broaching The Subject
ravenwoodglass replied to Lisa16's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This was the case for me. After I had been gluten-free for about 6 months my family saw a different person. Not just painfree and able to move but also even tempered and happy. A person my children had never met. It took little encouragment after this to get my family to test. For us inheritance was 100%. For the diabetic Mom who is reluctant to test... -
ARCHIVED What Proportion Are Self-diagnosed?
ravenwoodglass replied to CCM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am a bit of an oddball, I was diagnosed through elimination but I was diagnosed by a very savvy allergist. He suspected celiac when my allegy stick tests showed positive to all but one item. I had been blood tested over and over again for years, always negative so they never biopsied. He put me on an elimination diet and we knew 3 days after I added... -
Please do make sure that it is linked. You may want to test on a fairly regular basis to make sure it resolves after the gluten clears your system. It sounds like you and your doctor are on top of this but if things escalate (ie. edema) be sure to get back to him.

ARCHIVED Gi's Passing The Buck
ravenwoodglass replied to Worriedtodeath's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You have gotten some good advice already. One of the simplest things to do to know if you are getting balanced nutrition is to look at your plate. Is it colorful? If it is chances are it is pretty balanced. My Mom taught me that as a child and it was reinforced in nutrition classes that I have taken. You can sneak veggies into a lot of stuff, meat... -
I have had my kidney impacted by celiac. When glutened they bleed and they also throw more protein. I try to drink more water when glutened but haven't found anything other than gluten free and time that helps.

ARCHIVED Numbness After Going Gluten Free
ravenwoodglass replied to confusedl18's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I would strongly suggest getting a for sure gluten free sublingual B12, that may help a great deal. Also make sure you have checked all non-food sources of gluten. Toiletries, shared toasters, shampoo, lotion, stuff for crafts like clays, glues etc. Many do experience a withdrawl when they go off gluten. That can cause a temporary increase in depression... -
ARCHIVED <b> Did Anyone Lose A Lot Of Weight Going Gluten Free? </b>
ravenwoodglass replied to kelsey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My actual weight loss was only about ten pounds but I went from a 12 to a 4 in less than a month and also lost a shoe size. In my case it was mainly because I lost the bloat and the full body edema that made me look 7 months pregnant. I basically looked like a stick carrying a watermelon prediagnosis. -
ARCHIVED Dr. W/celiac disease But Only Acknowledges Classical Symptm
ravenwoodglass replied to marilyn's topic in Doctors
I would suggest to those with suspected DH that they see a derma and ask specifically for a biopsy for it. I would also gather some documents that are fairly recent from publications like Lancet, NIH, and PubMed and give them to him. Doctors don't get much education about celiac. I found it incredible that my GI doctor had no clue that celiac can cause... -
ARCHIVED Putting The Pieces Together, waiting On Biopsy
ravenwoodglass replied to mamasaidso's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well at least you now have your official celiac diagnosis, that would be the blunting. Do make sure that the material they give you to drink is gluten free, have you doctor note it on lab orders and then insist they double check before you drink. You may very well be right about the other damage being from the celiac, and it may heal fairly quickly once... -
ARCHIVED Parasites
ravenwoodglass replied to key's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thank you so much for posting this. You did it well and brought up a lot of good and accurate information in an easily understood way. I also agree that all this 'cleansing' stuff is scare mongering and can be dangerous. -
ARCHIVED 7 Month Old With Celiac?
ravenwoodglass replied to Philippe's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It can be quite confusing, what I should have asked is has he eaten any solid foods successfully? Whether jarred or something you have pureed yourself? I am hoping someone who has gone through this with a little one will pop in and give you some advice. You may also want to post a query on the Parenting section of the board to give you a better chance... -
ARCHIVED Biotin-how Much?
ravenwoodglass replied to L.A.'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I take Maxi-Hair vitamins by Country Life and they contain 2,000mcg or 667% of the daily requirement. -
ARCHIVED 7 Month Old With Celiac?
ravenwoodglass replied to Philippe's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It sure does sound like he failed a dietary challenge with gluten if he is able to eat other foods like say mashed peas or potatos, for example, without a problem? If so I would be more likely to think a gluten issue, rather than another problem. -
Thank you so much for posting this. It finally explains why the combo of sugar and gluten would knock me for such a loop even as a kid. I used to eat the candles from my birthday cake rather than the frosting for this reason. It also lead to many, many tests for diabetes. The next page is a page about celiac so be sure to check that out also.
