  1. Oats have a different protein that is very similiar to wheat, rye and barley. Not all celiacs react to this protein the same as they do to gluten but some do have a 'gluten' reaction. They are also commonly heavily contaminated. That is why it is advised that we only consume certified gluten free oats.
  2. Next time you are in a new place ask the waitress to check with the cook for the gluten free info on what they have. The manager is going to be clueless. The cook will be the one most likely to be able to help you eat safely and be happy to do so if you aren't there at the busiest time of the day. You were right to be cautious but who knows maybe they get...
  3. If you are not already taking it sublingual B12 may help this resolve more quickly. Just let your doctor know you are taking it or any other vitamin or supplement if the doctor does vitamin and mineral levels.
  4. This does sound like more than a PITA buyer. Good that paypal is acting on it and do be sure to let Ebay know what is going on also. Be sure to keep any email communication about the auction especially if the buyer was nasty or threatening. Was this a new to Ebay buyer? Some folks will ask for a buyer to contact them if they have a low feedback number and...
  5. On Ebay there really is no such thing as 'no returns'. When you put that in your auctions you are inviting just what has happened. Your best course is to allow him to return the phone and as soon as it arrives credit his account. You are selling a very high risk sort of item both for the seller and the buyer. You will have PITA customers. No way to avoid...
  6. If you get the genetic testing keep in mind that they only test for 2 genes and there may be more associated with celiac. Don't let a negative gene test convince you that the positive blood work was wrong. It is rare but there are celiacs that don't carry either of those genes.
  7. As others have stated positive blood trumps negative biopsy. You can start the diet today. Some doctors will give you an 'official' diagnosis with positive blood tests and response to the diet. Hope you are feeling better soon.
  8. IMHO if you can do the challenge and get a diagnosis you should. You may want to go to college someday, possibly be hospitalized etc and you would need to have safe food. You are young and if you have children down the line and suspect that one of them may be celiac it will be easier for you to get the doctors to check if you are already diagnosed. There...
  9. Sublingual B12 doesn't need to be digested. It is dissolved under your tongue. Since celiac damage can affect how we absorb B12 it bypasses the gut and the B12 gets directly into the bloodstream. If your arthritis is in your hands you might find a parrafin bath to be helpful. It is a tub with melted wax and in addition to helping with stiffness and pain...
  10. You're in the right place to find people that understand what you are going through. Have you tried eliminating anything other than gluten to see if it might help your arthritis? It isn't always the case but some get some relief from eliminating nightshades or soy. In my case I had to be very strict with my gluten-free diet and also had to eliminate soy...
  11. I like Bakery on Main cereals. A serving Nutty Cranberry Maple has only 20 grams of carbs, 8grams of sugar, 6 grams of fat, and 2 grams of protein. You might want to check out Cream of Buckwheat also as that is high in protein and easy to digest. It is very similiar to Cream of Wheat but buckwheat is gluten free.
  12. Might be a good idea to drop the gluten-free oats for bit. I think it is advised we not add them into our diet until we have healed well. Drop them and then when you have been feeling okay for a while add them back in and see if you react. There are some celiacs without one of the two commonly tested for genes. Hopefully your BF had other testing done as...
  13. I would not advise asking for the gene test as the first testing. In the rare instance that she is a celiac that doesn't carry one of the two genes that are looked for doctors will then likely decide to exclude celiac as a possibility. That could lead to her becoming very ill and going through a lot of unneeded testing for other disease. Since she has been...
  14. My DH, which was severe, began to heal after I dropped gluten and started to limit iodized salt. Within a couple of weeks I stopped getting new lesions and new blisters would only appear if I got glutened. It did take a bit of time for lesions to heal but not a real long time. If you are fearful of the toxicity of this drug you could try just being very...
  15. I would start with 1 and see if that helps before doubling the dose. I sometimes get pain after eating if I accidentally get some soy. Liquid name brand Pepto Bismal stops it very quickly. Don't know if that might help you.
  16. I have never used charcol tablets so it might be a good idea to start a new thread asking folks who have. As to it helping to detox from gluten I don't think it would be helpful. Celiac is autoimmune so antibodies are carried throughout the body not concentrated in the gut. What you may find helpful is avoiding dairy products for a while as they can be hard...
  17. Hopefully your new doctor will be helpful. The rash you had did it itch? Did it leave purplish scars that took a long time to fade? There is a skin condition called dermatitis herpeformis (DH) that some of us get. If you still have the rash a referral to a dermatologist might be a good idea. Do make sure the doctor is familiar with DH though as special testing...
  18. If you had positive blood tests you are celiac. There can be many reasons for a negative biopsy. Damage can be patchy and get missed. The genetic testing is not fool proof as even though the vast majority of celiacs have either DQ2 or DQ8 there are diagnosed celiacs that do not carry either of those genes. Since you have had your blood work and biopsy go...
  19. I was almost 6 weeks overdue with my first. I knew when I concieved but the doctor thought I had miscalculated. My second was almost a month overdue. Babies can actually lose weight when the go past term and my first peeled from head to toe and his skin was puckered like he spent a week soaking in a tub. He was however much more alert that the other babies...
  20. Have you had any celiac testing yet? If not ask your doctor to test. Has your doctor ruled out anything else it could be? Have you had any testing done like barium swallows, ultrasounds, x-rays etc? Projectile vomiting like you describe is not to my knowledge common with celiac but that is not to say it can't happen. Do keep eating gluten until all celiac...
  21. Gosh you have been going through so much. I am glad to hear that you are back to being gluten free. There are no tests for gluten sensitivity so if you had positive bloodwork you are celiac. Some of us have seen great resolution of fibro symptoms gluten free so hopefully you will also. Sending good thoughts your way for everything to get much better for you...
  22. This store is a very small Mom and Pop type operation. I am sure larger stores with break rooms have regs about that type of thing as it is rather unappealing to the customers. This area is a back room where customers don't usually go. There was no produce in the area at the time and they of course wiped down the cutting board afterwards. I am not sure any...
  23. Early on after diagnosis I used to get a lot of mystery glutenings. I was trying to eat healthier and buying precut fruit often from a small local grocery near me. One day I went into the back room where they process their fruit. They had a huge cutting board they used. It was lunch time and guess where the staff had layed out their meals. Right on that cutting...
  24. Can you bring your own coffee in a thermos? That way you know for sure that you are not getting glutened from CC on the cups. If you aren't drinking the coffee they have available and are just worried about the cups you could bring your own from home. If they use those disposable cups that come in stacks find out where the sleeves are stored and get one from...
  25. Artificial sweeteners, especially sugar alcohols, can be a problem for people. Including myself. I'm in NY and we are having the same weather here. It is important to stay hydrated but I don't need a lot of sugar and am not real fond of plain water. I get plain flavored soda water, nothing but water and flavoring no sweeteners at all. Some cooler and...
