Celiac.com - Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free Diet Support Since 1995

  1. 1) Could be. The symptoms are consistent, but could be other things at well. Trying the gluten-free diet to see if it helps would be a stellar way to find out. 2) No gluten. Ever. Yes, you'd have to throw the chicken away if a crumb got on it. 3) Most doctors are in the dark about celiac. It's up in the air whether gluten passes through breast milk...
  2. Open Original Shared Link It is FANTASTIC! We have heard so many comments from the teachers and parent volunteers in the lunchroom at how awesome Victoria's lunches are. Hers is pink.
  3. This could be it: Open Original Shared Link and Open Original Shared Link . My son's preschool went there on a field trip and had a great time!
  4. In addition to the bloodwork and/or biopsy, you could also have the gene testing done to see if he is dq2 or dq8. That wouldn't necessarily diagnose him, but it would give you a good idea if he is more prone to Celac as well.
  5. Soy is one of the top 8 allergens so its presence will be on the label. I am not an expert however, and knowing the folks around here, there is probably "hidden soy" somewhere.
  6. My husband and I are very seriously considering it. We've talked about it a lot lately. She has also had a lot of other stressors lately so we're trying to do a few things, mainly help her cope with stress which has never been her strong point. One thing we have done is supplement calcium with Viactiv which has helped in many ways (leg pains, etc) but I...
  7. We usually expect DD to go to school (and stay at school) when glutened, but her symptoms don't include disruptive diarrhea. If she couldn't keep out of the bathroom, I would keep her home. In fact, most schools have policies that a kid has to be free of puke and diarrhea for 24 hours. Not just to keep disease from spreading, but also because it is disruptive...
  8. I ask this question a lot. I know my daughter gets depressed. Way more depressed than you think a 10 year old should be and she has a very stable and supportive family, etc. so it's not like there are other traumas or issues she has to deal with. She just has complete emotional meltdown and sadness that she has a hard time describing--even not following...
  9. Let me just clarify something. Your husband is a pediatrician and your child is sick with (whatever) and he thinks that IBS is a reliable diagnosis? Oh my goodness! As the previous post said, IBS isn't a diagnosis, it's a grouping of symptoms related to something else. Whatever that something else might be.
  10. I'm in Colorado, too. Just curious, what line of work are you in? A Master's Degree is a great thing to have that should be able to open up doors in many industries, not just one, but I can see how the fog and depression about Celiac and feeling unwell can cause those feelings of helplessness. I certainly think a new job or line of work would...
  11. I'm glad you are feeling better and that gluten-free is working for you. YAY!
  12. My daughter goes to a Catholic school. They have a chalice just for non-wafer receiving folks that isn't contaminated with the crumbs. She was DXd after her 1st communion, but had she not been, I would have let her use the low-gluten wafer for 1st communion and then let her decide as an adult if she wanted to continue to do that. If your church can...
  13. We love ours and use it a few times a week. We do rice, soup, chili... all sorts of stuff. As long as you heat up the thermos before filling it, it stays plenty warm by lunch.
  14. I'm not sure it's that they are not entitled to a hot meal, but I feel the risk of trusting a full-on cooked meal for my child at school is too much of a risk for error. I can control what my child safely eats by packing her lunch every day. Even with a 504 plan, who knows if they'd mess it all up? I'm not willing to take that risk at all! I can totally...
  15. I second the Yoplait. We buy it buy the truckload it seems. Although, my Celiac is not a fan of yogurt, my son who is not Celiac eats about 2 yogurts every day.
  16. I was wondering this very thing myself the other day. I picked some skins up as well. Our first attempt at spring rolls didn't work so well, but now I have a plan. I bought some coleslaw mix (the cabbage w/ carrots stuff w/out the dressing) and I'm going to toss in some canned crab w/ it and fry them up a bit. A yummy and easily reheatable quick dinner...
  17. This is my two-cents, for what it is worth. While it might not be the answer you are looking for, the spirit of my post is intended as support. We are all here for support. I come here to support my daughter because she is the Celiac, not me. I can learn things here I cannot possibly understand otherwise. However, I am raising her to understand that...
  18. You probably don't have much of a legal recourse. Generally students aren't permitted to heat up foods with the school microwave because then they would have to make it available for all students. I think you're best off sending foods that your child can eat unheated. It sucks, but that is pretty much how it is.
  19. Good to know! DD has been in the dumps about cereal lately. This should help cheer her up!
  20. There are a few schools of thought about this. If a medical diagnosis is very important to you, then I would do the biopsy. As for blood tests, there are many false negatives, but not false positives--and make sure you understand the tests that were run (others here are probably better than me to tell you what is good/bad/ugly when it comes to the blood...
  21. You are definitely not crazy thinking there is a link between celiac and learning disabilities. Celiac can cause a myriad of muscular and neurological problems that would certainly make "learning" difficult for adults and children alike. From the basic level of getting "brain fog" and ADD-like when glutened (which is what happens to my daughter), there has...
  22. I was just wondering this myself! Thanks so much! This opens up the world of onion dip and marinades for sure! Happy happy day!
  23. Thanks for sharing. I'm "room mom" for the Halloween party at DDs school this year and am making it gluten-free. We are going to do caramel corn balls but she wanted to do cookies or cupcakes, too. We made the gluten-free Oreo's on Recipezaar.com today and were thinking of doing those with orange frosting, too. Yours sound nice and yummy for all the...
  24. We have a similar problem here in Denver. We do love going to Noodles though!
  25. My husband and I often talk about how much harder for an adult to be dx Celiac than a child, because kids have their parents watching over every spoonful of food to make sure it is safe! I completely understand the denial--I still go through phases when I think there is no way in the world my daughter could have a lifelong disease--one that if she doesn...
