ARCHIVED Colonoscopy Tomorrow
melmak5 replied to Teacher1958's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
MargStar Please feel free to PM me, I think overall I had a good experience, minus the prep. I have panic attacks in doctors offices/hospitals. So I got extra med to help relax me. They prevent some memories from forming, so I remember nothing of the beginning of my colonosocpy, but I do have memory of the middle, and then again of waking up.... -
ARCHIVED Colonoscopy Tomorrow
melmak5 replied to Teacher1958's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thank you all so much for your support! I apparently had a bad reaction to the prep (mag citrate)... it is not suppose to feel like fire and shards of glass on the way out. They found one polyp, everything else looked normal, but they took a bunch of biopsies, which I should know about in 2 weeks. They don't know what type of bacteria are overgrowing... -
ARCHIVED Colonoscopy Tomorrow
melmak5 replied to Teacher1958's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am leaving for this shortly. I think something went not so well. It felt like I was passing shards of glass and lemon juice all night. I got no sleep and have been painfully bloated, distended, gassy, gurgly and an overall crank. I don't know if the prep just had a lot of sugar = the bacteria in my gut to go wild, but I have no sensation of "squeaky... -
I am kinda in your same boat. I have been diagnosed and gluten free for 5 weeks and am battling a lot of D. I just just tested positive for bacteria overgrowth, so hopefully that is part of the problem. It broke my heart (I work in a cheese shop) but giving up dairy and soy have helped me. I would say the first couple days were the hardest, but once...

ARCHIVED Embarassing Poo Question
melmak5 replied to tuxedocat's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I second the "teach." Think about how much we talk about eating food, poop is normal, everyone does it. (And its a really good indicator for what is going on in your body.) I just learned that if your poop smells sweet, (mine has been smelling like blueberries, even though I haven't eaten them), its a sign that you might have a bacterial overgrowth in... -
CarlaB - Thanks, I will definitely try to find out what bacteria are harboring in my guts. The technition would only say the test was positive, so I have to wrangle a doctor into calling me back to find out what's next. I would have never thought to take the probiotics with the antibiotics (I have been taking probiotics for 2 months now and was going...

Update - Bacteria Overgrowth Study came back positive today I have never been so happy! This is most likely the reason why it hurts 5-30 minutes after I eat! Antibiotics here I come!!

ARCHIVED Why Is The Biopsy Necessary?
melmak5 replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am 26 and I was given the option by my first GI to either take the blood work as diagnosis or do another endoscopy (the first one was done months prior because they thought I had something wrong with my esophagus and they didn't do a biopsy then). I chose not to start eating gluten again and do an endoscopy. For me, I had lost too much time at work... -
ARCHIVED Colonoscopy Tomorrow

darkangel, that is horrible. I get panic attacks in doctors offices/hospitals, so I am hoping to really instill in these docs how ESSENTIAL it is that I not have a memory of this. I know its really important, so I am going to do it, but apparently my coping mechanisms are a little on the fritz... hence the preoccupation with grooming. I cannot wait... -
ARCHIVED Feel Like I Am Going To Lose It!
melmak5 replied to Mickide's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Mickide, welcome. I got worse before I got better on the gluten free diet. My doctor said it usually takes a minimum of 2 weeks to start feeling better, but can often take many months. I have been gluten free for 8 weeks, and I am still not "healthy" but things are getting better. (After 2 weeks I did notice that I was less tired, not falling asleep... -
ARCHIVED In Need Of Healthy Weight Gain
melmak5 replied to Lisa's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Flax seed or fish oil might help. I know some people who add a tablespoon or two to morning smoothies. The key is the banana, it helps with texture and masking some of the oil's taste. You can use sorbet instead of ice cream or yogurt, but you don't need to. Just add extra juice or fruit. I think berries, especially blue berries also help with the... -
ARCHIVED In Need Of Healthy Weight Gain
melmak5 replied to Lisa's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Nut butters are amazing. (pre-celiac I cut out my spoonful of peanut butter a day and lost a few lbs in a month) I really like almond butter. Its really good on gluten-free toast drizzled with honey/maple syrup. My favorite is on sliced apples or bananas, even celery. Olive oil might also help. Drizzle a little atop steamed veggies, salt and pepper... -
ARCHIVED Colonoscopy Tomorrow
melmak5 replied to Teacher1958's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Its totally funny because I have never been fully naked in front of a doctor before. I am worried that if I am spending the evening and morning in the toilet I might not have enough time to shave. I was worried earlier that I haven't dyed my hair in months. The doc won't even be looking at my head! I didn't even think about make up, but I am not a... -
ARCHIVED Colonoscopy Tomorrow
melmak5 replied to Teacher1958's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am becoming mildly nervous. For some reason I keep worrying that I will not maintain an appropriate level of grooming. I know that doctors probably don't care if my toes are painted or not, yet this is all I can worry about. Its kinda funny that I am not freaking out about whether or not they find something in my colon, no, its trying to allot enough... -
Sheryll, thanks so much. I have gotten new kitchen pots/pans/utensils/cutting board/toaster and one of my house mates even had the great idea of getting a big tupperware bin to store them all in. Once I found the courage to talk to them about all of this (they are both adults) I was amazed at how helpful they have been. They do forget to wipe down...

I was lucky to be seeing a psychologist throughout my medical ailments and testing process. (I had two immediate family members who have been very ill) It was the hardest thing I have ever done, walking through the door. Harder than all of these tests, pain and not knowing. My therapist was the first, and only person for a long time, who didn't think...

ARCHIVED Cow Milk And Soy
melmak5 replied to breadless in wonderland's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I should have prefaced that I am really biased. I have been soy-free for two months and last week I ate a handful of chocolate covered soy nuts and it was like a grenade went off in my gut. I was in pain, burping and regurgitating and horrible D. I love tofu, it just doesn't love me. Good luck figuring out what works for you. -
ARCHIVED Colonoscopy Tomorrow
melmak5 replied to Teacher1958's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks Teach. Yes, colonoscopy. But the prep is mag/citrate so perhaps if its not golytely (sp?) it requires different pre-prep. One week before its no NSAIDS Three days ahead its the "low residue" Day before is clear liquids, no red/pink/blue/purple dyes, jello, black coffee/tea Day before - 7pm 1.5 bottles of mag/cit 4-6 hours prior 1.5 bottles... -
ARCHIVED Cow Milk And Soy
melmak5 replied to breadless in wonderland's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am new, but to my knowledge if you have intestinal damage you can have "temporary lactose intolerance" and it is best to avoid all dairy till you have healed. Soy is really hard to digest, and you want to give your body a break and give it things that it doesn't have to work so hard to process. Also, not all soy milk is gluten free. I have found... -
ARCHIVED Colonoscopy Tomorrow
melmak5 replied to Teacher1958's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So I have mind scheduled for next Wednesday and I just got the instructions that say that I cannot eat the following starting 3 days in advance: NO: seeds, nuts, dairy, juice with pulp, fiber supplements, whole grains, potato skins, raw or dried fruit, cereals (not a huge problem , raw vegetables, fibrous cooked veggies, cold cuts, meat substitutes,... -
Jestar - Thank you, I think that is exactly what I am going to do.

I had meltdown two days ago. I got really sick... having to sleep on the couch cause its closer to the bathroom, and I ate the last of my cooked rice. I started crying because I didn't have a significant other to cook for me and the last thing I wanted to do was to cook, anything. I just wanted to sit on the couch and have someone else do all the thinking...

Jestar - she is questioning whether Celiac is the right diagnosis or not. She wants to "rule it out." But I really don't want any more pain or bleeding, so I think I am going to just ignore her for the time being and do the test, see what they say and go from there.

Thank you MommaG I bought new pots/pants/utensils 2 weeks ago, and I have a separate giant tupperware bin that I store everything in and my house mates are not allowed to touch. My "real" gluten-free date is because I found wheat in my lip balm and multivitamin and oatmeal in my body wash. So I am as sure as I feel I can be. I did cut out soy a...

I know asking the internet for advice is sometimes like using a magic 8 ball for life decisions, but I feel like I am in a pickle, so here goes... 5/02 - Woke up in the middle of the night coughing and in pain, above breastbone (difficult to eat for 2 days, regurgitating food) I was put on acid blockers 5/11 - Clear endoscopy, no biopsy 5/18 - Abdominal...
