  1. great words there lisa... i agree with you 100%. there's two ways to approach this disease... (1) you've been wronged and you'll be bitter and paralyzed and let it control you or (2) you drew an unlucky straw but you're going to make the best of it and control the things that you can and have a positive outlook. i've chosen (2). i was diagnosed in the...
  2. hmmm not sure about the shipping on foods by george. i get the english muffins at a local health food store or whole foods, and actually i started seeing them and their brownies at my shoprite!
  3. sorry, i was going off of memory on the Joan's product since i haven't had them in awhile. the foods by george english muffins are much larger and i'd find it hard to believe that they have much more calories. anyway, i was just offering my personal opinion on the products...
  4. hey guys, question for ya: has anyone in the NJ area found the new formulas in their stores? i've been to a stop & shop, my local shoprite and target, and they are carrying Corn, Honey Nut, Chocolate and Strawberry Chex, but they do not say gluten free (and show barley malt in the ingredients). BUT... the strawberry chex showed molasses in the...
  5. be careful, a lot of the gluten free bagels out there taste like gritty dirt! no lie! my favorite bagels are Glutino... they are crusty outside and soft inside just like a real bagel should be! as for english muffins, i've tried Joan's (which are very yummy, but VERY high in fat and calories). the best english muffins i've tried are Foods by George...
  6. all burts bees lip balms are gluten free... the original is my favorite with the peppermint... mmm also, i called wyeth last year regarding chap stick, and all of their varieties are gluten free. i use carmex at home too for the winter when my lips get very chapped... they have only a few very plain ingredients, however i did not call to confirm.
  7. after seeing this thread i RAN to my stop and shop on the way home from work yesterday.... and very disappointed. corn chex, chocolate chex... both the old version.... and NO honey nut. wtf? i was so excited too honey nut chex was my FAVORITE cereal pre-gluten free. and the search continues...
  8. The Roasted Nut Crunch bars are great! I actually called Nature Valley about those about a year ago, just to confirm that there wasn't any gluten hiding in one of the ingredients, but they are gluten free. If I remember correctly, she had also said that they are made on dedicated equipment... so eat up!
  9. i always use Newman's Own salsa.... number 1: it's delicious, and number 2: they are very clear about the gluten content in all of their products on their website! :-) enjoy!
  10. ok so i made Lemon Bars the other day using a recipe from "Barefoot Contessa" on the food network, but adapting it to be gluten free. For each cup of flour in the recipe, i substituted a gluten free mix (1.5c brown rice flour, 1.5c potato starch, 1c tapioca flour). The only thing I would have done differently is to add 1 tsp of xanthan gum to the lemon...
  11. great advice sixtytwo! you have to realize that this is something that you are in charge of and the only thing impacted is your own health and well being. i always ask a lot of questions when i eat out, because i won't eat something unless i know for sure that it is safe. as for mcdonald's french fries, i've heard the jury is mixed on the fries... i...
  12. just because i think it is worth noting.... Thumann's hot dogs have the "certified gluten free" logo on them... and they are my favorite hot dogs anyway. Delicious on a grainless baker hot dog roll or sliced up and stirred into amy's lentil vegetable soup :-)
  13. i still LOVE my coffee, but like you, cynical, it's a little rough on me since going gluten free. i have yet to try 5-hour but i might need it before heading to the gym tonight after a long day at work, so i'll let ya know how it works out for me :-)
  14. When I was on my way out with one of my friends about a week or so ago, we stopped for gas and he ran in to get a little bottle of that "5 hour Energy" drink... he said it works really well before workouts at the gym. Anyway, never try anything unless i know for sure that it is gluten-free, so I checked it out online, and in the FAQ section under "other...
  15. Excellent advice Gemini.... I couldn't agree with all of your points any more :-)
  16. my daily vitamins/supplements include... in the morning (all vitamins are Nature Made): Super B Complex Multi Complete Antioxidant Formula Calcium w/ Vitamin D Vitamin C in the evening before bed i take FloraQ2 probiotic when i've been glutened, i make sure i keep taking the probiotic, but i also begin using Acacia Fiber supplement...
  17. protein shakes always bother my tummy a little bit... but i've found the easiest to digest is biochem sports whey protein powder: Open Original Shared Link i typically only take a protein shake after a workout at the gym to fuel my muscle growth & repair. besides that, i feel that i get enough protein in my diet... consisting of lots of lean meat...
  18. i was diagnosed a year ago, and the list of things that i feel safe drinking: potato vodka (chopin is expensive, but it's the best vodka i've ever tasted and makes a fierce dirty martini, hahaha) smirnoff vodka, including all flavors bacardi rum captain morgan spiced run wine... oh how i love wine now :-) woodchuck cider i also will drink any other...

    ARCHIVED Ct Scan Question!

hey there... i had a CT Scan with contrast of the abdomen for a possible hernia a couple of months ago... i had to drink the fruity flavored barium sulfate (GROSS) and i was worried about the same thing. i googled the brand that they gave me and heard that it was gluten free.... however, i did get very sick from the barium.... tummy ache and all of the related...
  20. yeah i use both pacific and blue diamond almond milks for my cereals and protein shakes, and i rarely use it within 7 days of opening. i would say that i use it within 2 weeks though and it stays fine.
  21. they are listed on Frito-Lay's gluten free listing: Open Original Shared Link however, all of their items except for Lays Stax are made on shared lines with gluten containing products. with that being said, i've eaten tostitos and nut harvest almonds with no problem before, so i guess it's all in your tolerance level and sensitivity. enjoy
  22. there is an organic brand called Applegate Farms that makes lunch meats that are labeled gluten & casein free among other organic qualities. however, they are pricey and small servings, but i prefer the quality to the hormel natural selects. i am hesitant to get any lunch meats from the deli bc of the issues with the slicer. i know that boar's head...
  23. i was diagnosed in November 2007, and just had my follow up appointment and blood work. all of my celiac antibodies and vitamin levels fell comfortably in the normal range! with that being said, over the past 9 months or so, i've used paul mitchell tea tree shampoo, which clearly has "wheat" listed on the ingredients. when you think about the TINY amount...
  24. hey, for many years i was a HUGE coffee drinker, and even moreso in the year that i was diagnosed. since going gluten free and really starting to see results, i started to drink less coffee just because i wanted to go easier on my tummy. then i really started to realize that coffee was making me nauseous more often than not. so recently i switched over...
  25. yes you need to be careful about the vinegar used, but if they use rice vinegar, there should be no issue. i know some japanese places use a little bit of soy sauce in their rice too.... isn't it sad that you have to question everything in a sushi roll, which is usually just raw fish, rice and veggies?
