ARCHIVED Need Advice About Conflicting Test Results Please...
GFinDC replied to BellaBella's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome Scap, You are correct, the celiac antibody tests are useless if you have been gluten-free for that long. The antibodies start to drop of when gluten is removed. How long that takes is not fixed in stone, but the Chicago Celiac Center suggests two months. It is possible to develop new food intolerances also. You may have become intolerant... -
ARCHIVED Wheat And Swelling Legs But Negative Antibodies? Help!
GFinDC replied to ButterflyChaser's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, Edema (swelling) is possible with any allergic reaction. It can happen in any part of the body. Face, hands legs, feet are all fair game. I used to have lots of swelling in my feet and ankles and some in my face. For me it was grapes, and several other things that caused it. Not everyone who has celiac passes the celiac tests. It is possible... -
ARCHIVED Ack! Is This A Wheat Allergy Too?
GFinDC replied to gatita's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You are quite welcome Gatita. There is something called cross-reactivity with allergies that you may be affected by also. Cross-reactivity is when the allergic reaction kicks off to other foods besides the main allergen. Be wel! -
ARCHIVED Tested Today!
GFinDC replied to SMDBill's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
NP Bill. My mother had Grave's disease too. They killed off her thyroid with radioactive iodine. She used to get red in the face, have a fast pulse, and even got irritable. Which was very unlike her. Other posters have reported their throats swelling on one side or the other, and the swelled area feeling warm or hot to the touch, In my mother's case... -
Welcome Weoprogirl! Sounds like you have one smart family there. That's neat that you all stopped casein the same week. Celiac destroys the vili lining the small intestine. Those villi produce an enzme called tactase which digests the sugar in dairy called lactose. After a while on the gluten-free diet those vili may heal and start producing lactase...

ARCHIVED Newbie Here, 11 Months Since Going Gluten Free And Still Bitter?
GFinDC replied to Framefunnyfarm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi TripleF, That's a pretty horrific story. It's unfotunate that so many people with celiac have this kind of story. But many do. The doctors should test for celiac but often don't think of it or even refuse direct requests to test people. I am not bitter though. I have found a way to feel good most of the time and that is great. My sister figured... -
ARCHIVED Tested Today!
GFinDC replied to SMDBill's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Bill, The doc sounds lke a good one. The autoimune thyroid disease associated with celiac is called Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. With so many generations of your family having thyroid issues there is definitley somethig going on. Either all of them are iodine deficient for some reason or they are suffering from a common problem. Like celiac related... -
ARCHIVED 6 Month Follow-Up After Celiac Diagnosis - Still Poor Growth
GFinDC replied to mom2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thyroid is what I was going to suggest checking also. It is not a complicated test, just a little blood for the lab. Autoimmune diseases tend to like each other, so people can have more than one. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease that celiacs can get and women get it more than men. You can get Hashimoto's at any age, even as children... -
ARCHIVED Ack! Is This A Wheat Allergy Too?
GFinDC replied to gatita's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep, scary stuff. You can avoid if you know the allergen is present, but you may not always know. So being prepared ahead of time is important. Carrying an EPI-pen and a med alert card is a good idea. You may not be able to help yourself, so it is important to let others know what to do. Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Cheese For 1St Time In 3Mos
GFinDC replied to Raining Skittles's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The enzymes might help. Certainly if it is lactose intolerance then a lactase enzyme should help. If it is casein intolerance though they may not help at all. I had a bottle of DPP-4 that said it could help digest casein but I never thot it helped. But maybe if would work for someone else. -
ARCHIVED How Did You Come To Realize You Had A Dairy Issue?
GFinDC replied to mommyto2kids's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hah Hah Dave, you caught me! We hoseheads have to stick together I guess. My lactose intolerance started after a virus went around. After i got over the virus I got bloated and D every time I ate dairy. Stupid virus hit most everyone in the office but I don't remember anyone else having that happen. That was 7 years before gluten-free. I... -
ARCHIVED Afraid Yet Optimistic, For My Husband
GFinDC replied to nicoleashley's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Ooops, I agree with everything 100%, except the barley/malt part. Just the phrasing makes it sound like barley may not be a problem later. But it will be since it is one of the 3 grains that celiacs react to. I know you know this and it is just a finger/brain fart commnuication typing issue (like I get all the time). Just wanted to clarify for the newbie... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed with Questions
GFinDC replied to L.J.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hah, Squirmy, drat is right! Or something more colorful even. Actually, the Hain mayo works fine, just kind of pricey. So now I am going to have to try Eggbeaters just to see how awful they are. No shrooms for you eh? I can hear the soup Nazi now, No shrooms for you! Well, I don't think they make shroom-beaters. Seeing stars is great in Holywood... -
ARCHIVED Cheese For 1St Time In 3Mos
GFinDC replied to Raining Skittles's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Gatita, Taking pro-biotics may help you digest the dairy better. Since you have been off dairy for a while your gut bacteria may not be used to it. Some multi-strain probiotics may help if that is the issue. -
ARCHIVED Ack! Is This A Wheat Allergy Too?
GFinDC replied to gatita's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, If you decide to do another food allergy test for some reason, be sure to do it at the doctor's office. That way if you have a severe reaction and can't breathe, they can try to save your life. That would be good, eh? My ex had her son tested for wheat alergies at the doctor's office and he had a bad reaction that was unexpected. They were able... -
ARCHIVED Another Other Allergies?
GFinDC replied to gfbill's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, Recovery from the gut damage can take some time. Yourt vili need to heal so they can start absorbing nutrients properly again and repair themselves. Also the healing process can take a lot of enrgy. The bacteria in your gut may change with some dieing off an new strains taking over. Recovery is not alwys a straightline progress. Keep going though... -
ARCHIVED Worse Attack After Starting Diet And Being Exposed?
GFinDC replied to amiglute's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep, that does happen. Bunnie is right, if your body reacts badly to gluten you shouldn't eat it. Most people with celiac don't know they have it. Symptoms are often in places besides the gut. Symptoms in other parts of the body are sometimes misdiagnosed as some other condition. Some people are "silent celiacs" and have no obvious symptoms aslo. -
ARCHIVED Newly Self-Diagnosed - Get Tested! My Story...
GFinDC replied to SMDBill's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for posting your experince Bill. That's great advice. It doesn't alway work out that damage is detected with the endoscopy, but when it does it is good to know about the extent of damage. -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed with Questions

Ah yes, Hellman's canola was one I used for awhile. But they changed their ingredients to include potato starch so I quit eating it. No nightshades for me. Now i remebmer the egg sub. They call it Eggbeaters. I have never tried them so don't know if they are good or not. I am not sure what they are made of instead of eggs either. Probably ground smurfs... -

ARCHIVED Illnesses With Celiac Like Symptoms
GFinDC replied to zebrapig's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi ZebraPig, There is a newly identified condition they are calling non-celiac wheat sensitivity that can cause symptoms like celiac does. It can't be detected with the celiac disease tests, as it is not the same immune repsonse but a different one. So right now there is no dignostic process for it. And not much is known about it except that it causes... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed with Questions
GFinDC replied to L.J.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Squirmy, The peas are Giant grocery store brand, dry split peas. The beans are black beans from the organic store bulk bin, no brand name on them. I rinse them though. So they have to be soaked before cooking. Usually I add ham and onion and plenty of spices. Actually the mayo was a first time thing to try with them today. Hain Celstial brand... -

Ah yes, good song LJ! I can imagine you hummming that in the donut aisle! After a while you may join us in feeling sorry for those poor beings eating their gluten fixes. You know they are all just empty people shells full of gluten and chemicals right? Kind of like pod people, with their little alien babies inside. Ewww! Thanks Squirmy, U... -
ARCHIVED Am I Just Grabbing At Strings?
GFinDC replied to mars817's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Mars, There is also something called non-celiac wheat sensitivity. The article linked explains a study that was done to document it's existence. If you have that condition, you won't get a positive on celiac disease tests. The immune system response is called an innate response, but the normal celiac tests do not detect that. But you can have similar... -
ARCHIVED Looking For A Few gluten-free Alternatives
GFinDC replied to prairiemamma's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Before going gluten-free I used to make egg puffs with eggs and regular Bisquick. You mix 4 eggs and some milk with some Bisquick. Not much, it should still be thin and yellowy, not thick and doughy. Then add various stuff like meats, veggies, shrooms, cheese etc. Fry with a lid on the pan on low heat until it puffs up good and thick. The lid acts like...
