ARCHIVED Stomach Acid Deficiency - Is This Possible?
GFinDC replied to CNV2855's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think it is normal to have digestive issues after a glutening. Low stomach acid, high stomach bacteria, poor pancreas function, gallbladder affects or a bunch of other things might cause issues. The treatment is a strict gluten-free diet. I have taken and still do take Betaine HCL sometimes. If you have low stomach acid it might help to kill off bacteria... -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed Celiac, But Not Allergic To Wheat?
GFinDC replied to Greg Rappaport's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Enterolab has a test for soy intolerance I think. along with egg and casein and something else I don't remember. I've never used their tests myself. I did elimination diets to find my intolerances. There are 5 different kinds of immune cells I think. IgE is the allergy ones, and the others are good for self destructing your body, and killing off germs... -
ARCHIVED Lactose Intolerance Recovery
GFinDC replied to SEAliac's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Welcome funnydoc and thanks for input on the dairy posts. I hope you enjoy our little corner of the internet and stick around. We will be glad to help if you have any questions about the diet too, lots of us have learned the hard way how to adjust to the gluten-free diet. We like to share though and help new people. If you get bored there is a funny... -
Yogurt is generally more casein protein than lactose sugar. The bacteria eat the yummy lactose sugar to make yogurt. So you could be reacting to casein protein or leftover lactose or the angst of life or all three! Sorry, I am in a mood today. anyhow, hard cheese are mostly casein protein and probably some other protein too. So if you eat hard cheese...

ARCHIVED Lactose, Casein Intolerant As Well :-(
GFinDC replied to JH85's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yep, label reading is a good thing to do every time you buy something. Even if you bought product previously as ingredients can change. Even then it's easy to get in a hurry and not notice something in that little tiny print. I have to hold packages up to my face to read them often as the print is too small for normal eyes, (read that as my eyes) . I... -
ARCHIVED Tinnitus And Balance Problems/mild Vertigo
GFinDC replied to Pegleg84's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I didn't eat salt for 5 years, unless it was already in some food I had bought. I thought it was causing my high blood pressure so I cut it out. I did the same thing with sugar, and still don't use sugar except rarely I'll use a little molasses. I wasn't feeling well and so one day I decided to test my thyroid function. I suspected I might be low on... -
ARCHIVED What Were Your Symptoms? What Got Better?
GFinDC replied to JoshB's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Josh, Are you sure aliens aren't testing you? LOl, sorry silly joke related to your poll thread. Anyhow, I had zook loads of symptoms before gluten-free. Most of them got significantly better after going gluten-free, but I never got to feeling just right until I did 3 elimination diets and got some other foods out of my diet. Celiac can cause... -
Anybody Experience Puffy Swollen Face?
GFinDC replied to emryee's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Emryee, Welcome to the forum! I have had lots for the swelling puffy parts issues myself. My feet used to be swollen and my ankles and feet were marshmallow man style also. I quit wearing socks except at work and always took my shoes/socks off as soon as I could when getting home from work. When I took my socks off there were always big 1/4 inch... -
I voted on question one, but tried not entering any vote on question 2. Gong, no-go, the site said I had to answer both poll questions. So, I think the answer to the question "Can you enter a null vote?" is "No". I read once on this site that there are 300 symptoms of celiac disease. I don't know if that is true, or where the poster got that number...

GlutenFreeWorld.tv on Facebook I ran across this Facebook page today and thought it might be interesting for people. The page owner (Mara Alexander) has celiac and does videos about her experiences. Her husband has PKU. They are discussing a trip to Ireland on their next video. I have no financial interest in this Facebook site. Open Original Shared...

ARCHIVED Celiac, Caffeine And Sweating
GFinDC replied to Greg Rappaport's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Greg, There are actually thousands of plants in the nightshade family. most aren't used for food though. The food ones that bother me are tomatoes, peppers and potatoes. Sweet potatoes are ok though, they are a different plant family. And sweet potatoes are better for you than regular white potatoes anyway, they have more nutrients and antioxidants... -
Hi Tennisman, I found my other food intolerances by doing an elimination diet. Actually 3 separate ones because I quit too soon after find the f the first problem food. So I just ended up starting another elimination diet later. Actually I consider myself to be on an extended elimination diet always. I try new foods but don't add more than one...

ARCHIVED How Many Ppm In A Piece Of Cake?
GFinDC replied to kellynolan82's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What you do is take your cake and measure how many grams it is. Then you wash the cake in cold water until nothing is left but a glob of gluten. Then you can weigh the gluten glob and do some kind of math thing with a calculator or find one of those friends with a math head who can tell you some numbers about it. This video should get you started on the... -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Joint/bone Inflamation
GFinDC replied to Greg Rappaport's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Greg, I used to have sore joints, knees, shoulders, ankles, and a stiff neck too. I got the soy and nightshades out of my diet and that cleared up. Once in a while I have a little soreness in my right shoulder but not every day like before. The other thing I do is use iodized salt so I know I am getting enough iodine in my diet. I take B-12, a... -
I agree with the idea of taking a break from the alcohol for a while. Maybe a month or two to see how it affects you. It may have negative effects you won't recognize unless you go off it for a while and see the difference. I'd be spittin' nails at a "friend" who tried to poison me. They wouldn't get the chance to do it again that's for sure. There...

ARCHIVED Celiac, Caffeine And Sweating
GFinDC replied to Greg Rappaport's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I gave up coffee and tea a couple years ago. I can drink soda with caffeine but not much of it, and not for 2 days in a row. Or it starts causing bad effects. So I don't really drink caffeine in soda much any more. Or soda at all for that matter. It makes me crash hard, almost to the point of passing out. Just isn't a positive any more. I think... -
ARCHIVED What If A Gluten Free Diet Is Not Strictly Followed?
GFinDC replied to Jen39's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've read quite a few stories like your husbands' on this board. People go to the doctor for some complaint and end up getting diagnosed with celiac disease. Celiac has a really wide range of symptoms and can be confusing to diagnose because of that. Also people with celiac disease have a higher than average chance of contracting other auto-immune diseases... -
ARCHIVED New To Celiac And To The Forum
GFinDC replied to Sarunski's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Sara, Welcome to the group! The reason you can't eat little bits of gluten after a while is that celiac is an autoimmune disease. Your body makes antibodies to itself when exposed to gluten. If you think about germ caused diseases, like mumps or measles or whatnot, once you have them that's it. Your body then knows how to make those antibodies... -
ARCHIVED African Americans And Celiac Disease
GFinDC replied to Bravie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I met a person with celiac at one of our local groups who is African-American. Also, it seems like I read an article a while back saying there are more ethnicities having or potentially having celiac than was once believed. I think they mentioned Asian people having celiac. It is not just a caucasian person's disease anymore. Hooray? Sounds like a... -
ARCHIVED Lost
GFinDC replied to wildapple's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi WApple, A couple things for or you. Soy is bad for the thyroid because it inhibits the thyroids ability to use iodine. It is considered a "goitrogen" for that reason. There are other foods that also are goitrogens. Soy is one of the worst though and you can do some searches and read about infants that were given soy formula and developed goiters... -
ARCHIVED Milk Lifting My Mood And Giving Energy...why?
GFinDC replied to speedy2056's topic in Sports and Fitness
It could be the casein protein also. The American military once experimented with using casein as a fatigue fighter for soldiers. I have reactions to dairy products myself. I once stayed awake for 3 days straight after eating cheese and wasn't even tired. Started sleeping a after that 4 hours and then 6 hours the next day etc. Now that I have been... -
ARCHIVED Lost
GFinDC replied to wildapple's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
could be Dh dermatitis herpetiformis. DH is a skin condition only celiacs get. They biopsy the skin near the lesion or blisters, not the lesions itself. They look for antibodies in the biopsy. Check out the DH forum on this site for lots more info. It is described as incredibly itchy, so that fits. Also, Hashimoto's thyroiditis is more common in people... -
ARCHIVED Free Celiac Testing
GFinDC replied to kareng's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think it's great that they do this free testing. Very helpful for people near Chicago, although I don't think the discriminate against people coming from outside the area. -
ARCHIVED Wow - gluten-free Really Makes A Difference!
GFinDC replied to AMom2010's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There some people with celiac who react to oats like they react to other gluten grains. So it might be a better idea to stay off the oats , even gluten-free oats, for a month or two until you are better in tune with your body gluten free and know the diet better. There are other breakfast cereals you can eat, like BRM mighty tasty gluten-free hot cereal... -
ARCHIVED Devigest & Syntol Defeat Celiac Disease?
GFinDC replied to Ester41's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
DPP-4 or DPP-IV, listed as the active enzyme in Devigest has been available for several years now. You can get it from several makers. It is not new. It won't prevent an auto-immune reaction from starting though, our bodies aren't fooled that easily. There is a product called GlutenEase that has it and other companies sell it also. If it helps a little...
