ARCHIVED Will Celiac Ever Be A Trait And Not A Disease?
lizard00 replied to foodiegurl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I hate it, too, to say I'm 'diseased'. On the other hand, the word disease catches people's attention. People took me seriously to begin with, but you throw the word disease at them... it's not just some diet that you're doing to lose weight or for attention. I'm not sure it would ever change. It's an autoimmune reaction to a normal food substance... -
ARCHIVED Question About Labs And What To Do Now... :(
lizard00 replied to siligurl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi and Welcome The first thing I noticed is that your total IgA is low. This has a direct bearing on the outcome of your labwork, since all of your tests are IgA based. Basically, your results are going to be negative because you don't make enough IgA. You can have them run the IgG versions of the tests, and if that comes back elevated, it's a good... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Make You More Susceptible To Swine Flu
lizard00 replied to UnhappyCoeliac's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I would like to remind everyone to please stick to the original topic. The original poster initially asked whether having an auto immune disease, such as celiac, puts us at a higher risk for catching the flu. Thanks -
ARCHIVED Got The Blood Panel Done While On gluten-free Diet
lizard00 replied to karenhockley's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You already have a celiac diagnosis. While it was once believed that it was a childhood disease and could be outgrown, research has proven this to be wrong. There does appear to be a period where you seem to be 'cured', but this is not the case. Sounds like your doctor needs some educating! You should get your kids tested, since it is hereditary. Doesn... -
ARCHIVED Is Joint Pain Associated With Celiac?
lizard00 replied to kimy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum!! Yes, joint pain is often associated with celiac. Open Original Shared Link This is from the National Institute of Health. The list is by no means exhaustive, but might help you with any other symptoms you may be having. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Make You More Susceptible To Swine Flu
lizard00 replied to UnhappyCoeliac's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It's also likely that this person had type 2 diabetes, which is NOT an auto immune disease. It is almost always brought on by lifestyle choices. Using only the information provided, I would venture to say this person probably wasn't very healthy to begin with. -
ARCHIVED From Scratch Pancakes
lizard00 replied to Roda's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I think mine get thicker because I can't use eggs. The egg replacer works fine as far as binding/rising the pancakes, but I don't think it adds enough liquid (only 2 T of water). My theory anyway... It's the best recipe I've tried so far, and my son and my husband love them. And they've had to eat some other scary experiments... -
ARCHIVED Ahh! So Excited!
lizard00 replied to Scout8501's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for posting that! I had a similar situation with my doc, she didn't understand that having an IgA deficiency would skew all the IgA tests. And she didn't run the IgG version, either. I wish I knew then what I know now! It would've been a lot easier. -
ARCHIVED From Scratch Pancakes
lizard00 replied to Roda's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've been working on pancakes, too. I never ate them before (they always made me sick, even as a child) but my son LOVES them... so I've made about 3 batches now that have turned out great. I use Carol Fenster's mix, but this would probably work with just about any recipe. Her book says to let the pancakes sit for 5 minutes before you start cooking them... -
ARCHIVED If Your Kid Is "glutened" Should You Consider Vaccines?
lizard00 replied to inskababy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yes, people can react to MSG. I do. But MSG, whether you feel it's safe to consume or not, is not a source of gluten. -
ARCHIVED Are The New Food Labeling Laws Innefective?
lizard00 replied to RESO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Since most beer is made from barley, it wouldn't have to be stated, because listing the beer as an ingredient is sufficient. Barley doesn't have to be clearly listed. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe if the company discloses in the ingredient list "wheat protein", it's not required to list it under the warning, or any warning for that... -
ARCHIVED If Your Kid Is "glutened" Should You Consider Vaccines?
lizard00 replied to inskababy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Pardon my snarkiness, BUT... You posted about a very controversial and sensitive subject on a PUBLIC forum. You cannot realistically expect that no one is going to post regarding their disagreement with you. And if someone is sending you nasty PMs... report them. PMs are subject to board rules, too. -
ARCHIVED Which Tests Should I Request For A Diagnosis?
lizard00 replied to Tim86's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't know a specific price range for the testing, it would probably depend on the lab. But, I would think that it would be cheaper to do them all at once, and if they're going to take your blood, why not get the whole panel done to avoid having to go back for more bloodwork for the same disease? If you are still eating gluten, genetic testing is... -

ARCHIVED First Trip To The Gastro Didn't Go So Well
lizard00 replied to Seamuskitty's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had a bad first gastro experience, too. And I would also agree that you should go to a doctor recommended by your celiac group. They are the ones that usually know better, and since almost all of us have been treated that way by at least one doc... My doctor told me I had to have the gene to have celiac, and looked at me like I couldn't possibly have... -
Congratulations! I am so glad to hear that he is doing so well for being so early. Get some rest!!!! I know it'll be hard, but try.

ARCHIVED Raw-vegan Diet, Not Losing Weight. Help!

1200-1300 calories a day. JUST for one week then increase your intake to 1500-1600 for three weeks. -
ARCHIVED Raw-vegan Diet, Not Losing Weight. Help!
lizard00 replied to rtwaite's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I think that what makes a weight loss program effective is whether or not people can reasonably stick to it, and that you learn something in the process. I don't know too much about calorie cycling vs counting calories, but from what I know I would say that it is probably not the easiest to stick with (as you mentioned) because you have to remember a... -
ARCHIVED Cheeseless For A Reason?
lizard00 replied to mandy-c's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've started wondering this about myself recently. I can't eat most cheeses, either, but ice cream doesn't seem to bother me. I haven't had straight cow's milk in a loooong time, the last time I had it was close to a year ago and I remember it tasting funky. (Which I think was only because I hadn't had it in so long) Sour cream and yogurt also bother me... -
ARCHIVED Whole Foods/gluten-free Pantry Bread Mix
lizard00 replied to JustCan's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I make the Whole Foods brand mix all the time with no eggs. I use the Ener-G brand egg replacer for that and find that I don't have to make any changes with it. It turns out great! I personally wouldn't go the banana route with this bread, unless you want banana tasting sandwich bread. But I may try the flaxseed substitution... I had forgotten about that... -
ARCHIVED New Here...questions Already
lizard00 replied to Lynnie's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
LOL No, I'm not the owner. There is an owner, Scott Adams, who owns the whole celiac.com website and the gluten-free mall. I'm just one of the moderators. We help Scott keep the board running, and I just happened to be on here tonight to move some of the stuff around. Feel free to ask any questions! That's why we're here -
ARCHIVED New Here...questions Already
lizard00 replied to Lynnie's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
It's generally because your post hasn't yet been pinned, or it has been moved. I just moved some of your stuff around: I set your duplicate post invisible simply because you had posted it already and had a lot of answers. Just helps keep things more consolidated, and then I moved your originial post into the "Pre-Diagnosis/Testing/Symptoms" forum... -
ARCHIVED How Careful Do I Need To Be?
lizard00 replied to kdonov2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This is worth repeating. Why don't you do an experiment and be very careful about all sorts of contamination for two weeks, and see if you start to feel better. I just had a conversation with a friend of mine about this, who is also gluten intolerant/possibly celiac. She would eat bread occasionally. I told her the same thing and this is the second... -
That's great! I read your other post, BUT I don't remember if you have other intolerances or not. So, if you can do rice, pick up some rice pasta (Tinkyada is the favorite brand around here) and voila! You have pasta again. I have given Tinkyada to quite a few people and didn't tell them that it was rice, and they never knew the difference. In fact, a few...
