  1. You have two choices: You can get tested, if that is an option for you right now since you mentioned you don't have health insurance. If you don't care about a formal diagnosis, try the diet for 6 weeks or so and see if you notice a difference. Remember though, if you go off gluten for any length of time, you pretty much ruin your chances of getting an accurate...
  2. You already indicated a few of the things that popped in my head. I get that way when I get glutened, and you have described a lot of how it makes me feel. I usually find that apple cider vinger with some water (like 1 tsp in a shot glass w/water) helps ease that burning sensation. I think I am on the low side of stomach acid production, and when I get glutened...
  3. I just read the full article. It was very interesting. I think it is noteworthy that the purpose of the article wasn't to determine whether the children could safely ingest gluten, it was whether mass screening was effective or not. (Which is also the title of the article) There were clear ramifications for most of the children whose PARENTS didn't believe...
  4. I'm IgA deficient, too. I don't know what other tests are IgA based, but since IgA is an antibody, my guess is it would be specific to immune system issues, if it is used in other testing. If you are not gluten free already, ask your doctor to run the IgG version of the tTG test. It is useful in those of us with IgA deficiency. It's not as specific to celiac...
  5. Just wanted to lend my support!! I quit about 5 1/2 yrs ago, and haven't looked back. The hardest part for me was the first couple of weeks, but my husband had quit a couple of months before and was really starting to hate it. So he was very supportive. He kind of annoyed me at the time, but I knew it would be worth it. Keep it up!!!!
  6. You know, a dietician once told me that. But now, I'm looking into it. Seems like it did hinder absorption, not totally, but did hinder it. I'm investigating as we speak....more to come. Maybe she was giving her opinion? EDIT: Open Original Shared Link I have a feeling this was because my mom eats very little dairy, if any, and since all RD...
  7. OMG! sbj are we agreeing on something!!!
  8. I didn't say it wasn't weight bearing, I said it wasn't enough. Walking is often recommended because it's easy, it's free, and it's great cardiovascular exercise. I know plenty of people who walked for exercise for years and have osteoporosis, one in particular has kyphosis. Thanks, but I'll stick to my 30 min of hydraulic machines. In addition, people...
  9. Thank you sbj for mentioning exercise, it is absolutely vital that you do weight-bearing exercise. Walking is not enough, however, you need to actually do something involving weights, ie hydraulic machines, free weights, etc. And if you take calcium in the morning, make sure it's not with your coffee. My mom is 59, has reversed her osteoporosis into...
  10. Scott is simply providing a list of what foods/products are safe to use on a gluten-free diet. His personal feelings on these items is not noted, nor should it be. As regards their use with the gluten-free diet, they are safe. Everyone should make their own choice, backed by their own research.
  11. HI, and welcome to the forum As you said, your results had no chance in being positive having been on the diet for 8 years. Doctors use blood tests as a way to monitor patients progress and to make sure they are sticking to the diet, so why they thought it would indicate whether you had celiac or not is beyond me. There is a difference in celiac...
  12. I took align for a few months and had no problems with it. You should take one a day. Some probiotics are for the small intestine (like acidophilus), some for the large intestine (I believe Align is for the large intestine). As far as I know, they don't have to be broken down through your liver, because the probiotic stays in the intestine, and the only...
  13. I feel the same way I had seen them referenced here a few times, and I finally came across them and ate almost the whole box. I buy them two at a time now and make them last me a week... LOL
  14. You didn't do anything wrong. It's a fast food restaurant to begin with, and often the employees only care so much about you and your requests. I went to a restaurant the other day while traveling, it was definitely NOT my first choice, but I knew they had a gluten-free menu. When I asked the waitress for one, she said "I don't think we have one. But I'll...
  15. If I am reading this correctly, he has duplicate copies of the DQ2 gene, and that actually puts him in the highest risk bracket. I have double copies of the DQ2 gene, and my risk was 31x higher than someone without the gene. I agree with the advice so far. Testing in children is very inconclusive, and you should definitely seek out another doctor who...
  16. As you know, it's very possible to be asymptomatic and have celiac, although I wouldn't consider you that... since you posted about nausea, that could be your symptom. Either way, peoples sensitivity levels do vary, and what might make me sick may not bother another. You may be CC'd and not know it. That can be both a blessing and a curse, because if...
  17. ok, I'm not Bev, but I had it done last year through Prometheus and it was a little over $500. My insurance paid for about 200 of it... and yes, I was left with the bill. Kcat99, I was pretty much diagnosed based on genetic results combined with dietary results. I am completely fine with it, but do sometimes worry if I ever change doctors. But...
  18. I've wanted to try Mama Dips for awhile, but was a little unsure. Thanks for posting your experience, maybe I'll get out that way one of these days
  19. I wish I could help! But I LOVE that stuff... I'm in NC, but I worked with a lady from Buffalo, and everytime she went for a visit she would bring us bags of that stuff. We went through it like nobody's business!!! I understand the craving, let me know if you ever find it. I'd probably order it online.
  20. YAY PATTI!!!! I'm so glad you got out to eat and were taken care of so well!! Major points for Houston!
  21. If the airline told you that, I would think it's true. They would be the best source of information as to what you are allowed to carry on. What I would be more concerned with is if they'll let the food into the Bahamas.
  22. I think your post is great! Celiac has affected me in many of the same ways. I am much more knowledgeable about what I eat, and I eat so much healthier than I used to. I also learned that I love cooking, too. I've tried to cook things that I was scared of trying before, like Indian, Thai, or Chinese. I feel better overall, I'm sure because of being...

    ARCHIVED Parasites

I think the problem when you start self-diagnosing parasites, specifically, is that you start using things that could potentially be dangerous to your body. It's one thing to tell someone to try the gluten-free diet, that won't hurt you in any way. People choose to not eat foods for various reasons. Different vitamins aren't necessarily going to hurt you...
  24. I sent them an email thanking them profusely for their considerations for us, blah blah blah. And put in there that the price was a bit steep, especially when you take into account that many families are gluten free and it would thus be cost prohibitive for them to eat out. They did respond and say that they valued customer feedback and would pass it...
  25. Hey Valerie I can only offer the same advice, ditch the Taco Bell. You can get tostadas at the grocery store, or corn tortillas and heat them. It won't require a whole lot more work for you, but would cut down on the contamination factor. I ate at Taco Bell once since gluten-free, it was probably a year ago, and haven't done it since. Can't remember...
