  1. I'm not the gene person, I'm just bumping this up and hoping someone else more literate sees it. But, I think that means he's got the DQ2 gene, just like 30% (roughly) of the population. However, having the gene does not mean one automatically goes on to become celiac, it just means that the person is capable of it. Most celiacs have DQ2, but, obviously...
  2. Oh, lmao, Dr. Green's response to a Katie Couric question re the fad aspect of gluten free diet ! Response: Actually our (United State's) use of these products is low compared to the rest of the world. LOL.
  3. No, I'm not bitter, I try to avoid glutening myself as best I can because I don't like the side effects, and I am grateful to the other bloggers many years ago who were blogging against conventional medical wisdom and writing about diet, starch, gluten, and inflammation. Of course, I have pretty good support at home, because my spouse decided spontaneously...
  4. To find this do google or other search engines like this: gluten free McKinleyville CA gluten free Eureka CA gluten free Arcata CA Or any other town and state in the area near where you will be staying. See also: Norcal Gluten Free - Open Original Shared Link Gluten Free Group of Humboldt County on facebook - Open Original Shared Link Find Me...
  5. This reaction to eating gluten, after being off of it awhile, does not happen to normal people who are eating a glutenfree diet for awhile for other reasons, such as living in a gluten free home with family members. So it is unique to the celiac and gluten intolerant. If you had not started the gluten free diet, you would have still developed those neurological...
  6. If you have a first degree relative (such as your brother or parent) with celiac, that means your risk for developing it is MUCH higher. If you have the genes for celiac, that means you're also much more likely to have it. If you have the symptoms, and the first degree relative with it, and the genes, and the doctor is still saying you don't have it, well...

    ARCHIVED Eggs?

I'm trying to imagine chickens running around with massive Leaky Gut Syndrome, and then shedding gluten through their pores in their skin, instead of just pooping the gluten out. Sort of like it's already breaded for deep frying. It's Poultry of Mass Destruction !
  8. Electric fence corner insulators. Just spray paint 'em yellow first.
  9. It's not possible to tell, because the dim sum could have contained so many different ingredients. But don't eat that, again, and you'd better start carrying benedryl antihistamine with you.
  10. Take it easy in the beginning, and listen to your gut. I actually had more trouble finding a yogurt I could tolerate, because various different ways of making yogurt uses dry milk as thickeners, and I don't think the lactose was getting processed out by aging. I tried organic yogurts and had the same problem. Finally found a plain greek yogurt that works...
  11. Isn't Velveeta cheese gluten free ? So the teacher should make the entire project gluten free by using Velveeta instead of cheezewhiz, the celery, and then any gluten free cereal, (Rice chex, corn chex) or something like raisins for the "coconuts" or M&M candies. I doubt she has thought of THIS option. I did a google image search of "chicka chicka...
  12. The longer you are on a gluten free diet, the more intense the reactions to cross contamination can be, so there is little motivation to "cheat" at all. Plus, after a short while, most people adapt to the tastes of their new, healthier diet, and "regular" food doesn't seem that appealing, and the gluten isn't missed. So it is just the social aspect that...
  13. If you get SICK from eating gluten, with those results on a celiac panel blood test, do NOT let Kaiser try to b.s. you that you really don't deserve an "official diagnosis" if your biopsy, for some strange reason, comes out negative. This is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT if they then tell you to stop eating gluten, anyway. Kaiser HMO - do not trust them, and...
  14. Yes, it's possible they didn't see it. It may not be visible to the naked eye or the damage can be patchy, and they did not look in an area which had the damage closely enough. For celiac, they are supposed to look in the area where the stomach and intestines meet, the duodenum. They are supposed to take enough samples for biopsy that they get a good...
  15. Get a full celiac blood panel run. Be aware that some of us with neurological symptoms don't test out easily to confirm. After testing, stick with the gluten free diet since you are having a good response, and you should be able to avoid the complications of long term nerve damage. If your doctor is not responsive to your requests, find another one...
  16. Sigh. I was within "normal" when these types of tests are run. So your joints can be blowing up big time, and some docs will announce you're not arthritic even if you've told them you are a sero- negative already. Good thing I have lousy looking xrays, if I can get them to scan the right body part. Oh, but wait, they won't do that, they'll look somewhere...

    ARCHIVED Rheumatologist

IF you can get your HMO to get the referral and then pay for it, you can try to consult with a rheumatologist, and I am recommending, as always, that you pursue medical diagnosis. However, mentally prepare to be disappointed, as they will not necessarily be celiac or gluten literate, at all. Furthermore, rheumatologists are not really interested in...
  18. I see darker print !!! I'm not really going blind after all. Just age related cranky. Thanks ! Safari seems to have spell checker wurking. For some wurds, not udders. Somewhere there is a Password Valhalla, where old passwords go to the Summerlands. The password hints go to the meadows of Folkvanger which is ruled by the Norsk...
  19. Since you know your are already at least gluten intolerant if not officially celiac, you tell the Gastro doctor you are unable to go back on gluten for testing because it incapacitates you. Then it is up to he/she to devise the next steps. Don't make yourself sick just for test. Your symptoms could be chronic mild levels of cross contamination and/or...
  20. PF Chang's is good for Chinese. In and Out Burger, the burgers can be made "protein style" wrapped in lettuce, and you tell them you have a food allergy (that is what they said to tell the order taker) to whatever you're trying to avoid, so you would need to visit the website and see what normally goes on the burger will do or not. I tell them it is a "wheat...
  21. I hate it when websites show their "new and improved" version as smaller print, lighter in color, with a more busy background and even more avatars scattered around. And now there is a doubled headed thing to the left of this reply box which seems to say I am a couple or a two headed turtle, and I am posed with a male borg-type creature, with no eyes, nose...
  22. It was the "Food Should Taste Good" brand. I do not see the flavor that I had on their current website, it was a cinnamon flavor with corn, and it tasted like a graham cracker. They may have changed their formulations, because I see now that some of the flavors contain corn bran, but I remember at the time researching, and it was on this site that someone...
  23. I avoided them (gluten free oats) for years, because I just didn't feel like finding out, I assumed that I would be okay, since I ate them before going gluten free. Then, one New Year's Eve, years later, I got accidentally oated by eating part of a bag of supposedly "gluten free" chips that used oat fiber, but did not disclose on the label. I reacted. ...
  24. Mati's Indian Food, the Sacramento, CA mid-town Indian buffet known for their great food that is also, incredibly, gluten free, (except for the naan and samosas) will be closing after this Saturday, October 27th. We ate there Thursday evening, and received the sad news from them, and they said to pass the word along, that this Saturday evening was going...
  25. We are gluten free at my house, and my spouse actually cooks a great deal, but..... I still am amazed at the "counter- blindness" I see with regards to crumbs, dust, and grease. It's a small kitchen and it's aggravating. He claims he wipes up, but it seems like I am always doing the same thing. He also uses a coffee maker that the only thing I do with...
