ARCHIVED Aaaagghhh... Ginger Ale?
Takala replied to Em314's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
When in doubt, test yourself on the elemental form of an ingredient, in this case, you would take some fresh ginger root, wash it off, and grate it, perhaps brew it in plain water in the microwave in a cup, then try it with a form of sweetener that you know you can already tolerate. Then try carbonated water or club soda separately, the next day. If that... -
ARCHIVED Explanation Of Biopsy?
Takala replied to Sarahsmile416's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Make the doctor give you some sort of "explanation" as to what IS causing the acid reflux which is causing the damage. Then you have 2 choices. You can either go on one of these wild-goose chases, take the meds, and go on one of these heartburn diets where you eliminate all these different acidic, spicy, fatty, dairy, and fried foods that supposedly... -
ARCHIVED Getting Ready For The Gi Visit
Takala replied to powerofpositivethinking's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have you had any doctor run a celiac blood panel set of tests yet, as the GI doc will not do the endoscopy without that. And the doctor may not do "pill cam" but the other kind of searching with a flexible tube, light, and camera. Secondly, on a tangent, the artificial hormones in the progestins in birth control pills can make women seriously depressed...- 4 replies

ARCHIVED Is This celiac disease, Ncgs, Or Pre-Diabetes?
Takala replied to Seeking2012's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Regarding diagnosis, all I can say is "So?" These esteemed, respected medical institutions can blabber all they want about the level of what they claim is their perfection at creating the "perfect" diagnosis, but it is all speculation because the majority of celiacs are still likely undiagnosed, because of the shabby, disjointed, for profit motivated medical... -
The day this website starts having the various lobbyist trolls harassing the people for wanting to stick to a gluten free diet instead of being Big Pharma's ongoing lab rats, is the day a lot of other websites are going to start to take its place. My "job" here on earth, having taken decades to figure out what was making me (and others) sick, is not to...

ARCHIVED Confusing Diagnosis
Takala replied to luckyald's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't think it would hurt your at all to try a gluten free diet. You may lack a formal diagnosis, but if you feel better and your symptoms clear up on one, they may take that into consideration and at least categorize you as non-celiac gluten intolerant. -
Perhaps the inmates needing a gluten free diet, should send the wardens the information from the media portraying the diet as a sort of horribly difficult regimen which is difficult to adhere to, is less nutritious, and doesn't taste very good. You know, a bit of reverse psychology using all the talking points by the wheat lobby we all know and love so much...

The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Takala replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Something funny..... my topical allergies to hay are flaring up a bit... the other day I carefully wiped out all the dog crates, then pro-actively powdered each dog with diatomaceous earth, because I don't want to hit them with chemicals during the time of year that it's cold enough the fleas die if they go outside. We then took all the sheets off the bed... -
No, you just need to save up enough nerve to be able to set boundaries with whatever situation you end up in. Roommates are really dicey, without the extra food safety issues, while living with relatives is also bad sometimes, because emotionally you would expect them to be willing to make an effort. It sounds like they are trying, but are not perfect...

ARCHIVED Biopsy ...so Frustrated At Myself
Takala replied to VeggieGal's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Certainly not your fault that they didn't sedate you thoroughly ! A lot of these docs ought to do a week's tour with an equine veterinarian making barn calls running naso-gastric tubes for colics to check for reflux, and then they'd learn what sedation really means - they can't knock them out because the horses have to remain standing and semi-conscious... -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Takala replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
WTF somebody lives in Florida and they come home with, first, salmon, and secondly, glutenoid salmon ? That takes some special kind of talent. Then they put this stuff on the grill as if heat can make the problemo go adios. Is 2013 the Year of Magical Thinking ? You'd better tell him not to show up next with imitation crab -
ARCHIVED Cross-Contamination
Takala replied to eleanorj's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Porous, soft surfaces should not be shared between gluten and non- gluten cooking. That means don't use the same teflon-coated pots and pans for both, nor the same wooden, plastic, silicone, and rubber. Well cleaned glass, ceramic, and plain slick metal are okay. The toaster really needs to be dedicated gluten free, so you'll need a new one for that. So... -
ARCHIVED Pest Resistant Molecules In Wheat
Takala replied to kareng's topic in Publications & Publicity
Sure, whattheheck, just put WGA in to rice, who cares. Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean that they (GMO special interests) aren't out to get you. -
ARCHIVED Pest Resistant Molecules In Wheat
Takala replied to kareng's topic in Publications & Publicity
So the wheat "looks" at us as big munching bugs. Or my stomach looks at wheat as bio- bug repellant. Or I have a lot in common with insects that eat grains. I could be descended from grasshoppers. Or insects could be becoming more like us, as we keep changing plants to resist insects, the insects benefit from our accidentally making the plants less compatible... -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Hypoglycemia

Try eating more good fats, such as found in nuts, coconut products such as coconut milk, and avocados, besides switching some or most of the starches into higher protein versions. -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Foods Cause Gi Issues
Takala replied to celiacSuzie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Or it could be gluten free oats. I was sort of heartbroken to have to give up the Bob's Red Mill Brand (they process gluten free oats in the same facility) when I finally figured out that it I react to even traces of gluten free oats, as that brand is the easiest to find around here. But it made a huge difference. -
Also notice how cleverly the original poster used Shauna Ahern's name in the original post. Ahern, who is a professional cookbook writer and who's husband is a chef, always has a set of people following her around the 'tubes making a game out of trashing her on the internet. Like this: (link) Open Original Shared Link From the comments...

You say you're "67" and supposedly gluten-free for 30 years ? Yet you just got here, and you're trying to guilt trip / get other aged people to lab- rat themselves for Big Pharma ? That would be the same Big Pharma (and some other entities whom are involved in genetic screening and whom depend on USDA agricultural subsidies to grow certain crops) that...

ARCHIVED 20 Month Old...starting Diagnostic Process
Takala replied to wembles's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
How cute. They seem to have mistaken your human child for a baby bovine calf. If you can get them to redo some tests that they missed (see Mushroom's post) and if you do get a referral to a pediatric GI eventually, keep him on gluten until the testing is finished. However, because testing is not completely accurate, esp. in younger children, when it... -
The original thread is from 2008 and that is 4 years ago.... there is no way to tell if that is the original ingredient list, or if the restaurant has changed it during the elapsed time interval. Or the suppliers have changed the source of ingredients... there is that "natural flavorings" which can be anything, again. While their latest pdf download from...

ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Sourdough Starter - Celiac.com
Takala replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
False false. If the lactobacillus has already performed a function in the process of creating bread, such as growing in a starter medium to be used like yeast, or helping to break down, by soaking, gluten- free grains further before baking, then it did perform a beneficial function, even if it then was sacrificed during the final cooking phase. Example... -
ARCHIVED Celiac & Non Celiac Kids... How To Keep Things Fair?
Takala replied to keirasmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That's quite a compliment on your cooking, and I would just humor her (the older one) for a while and bring food for both. The side benefit is that it would reinforce the "at least I'm sharing with somebody" feelings of the younger one also, to have a sibling sharing the same food when they travel somewhere. Treat your kids equally as much as you can, it... -

ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Salmon
Takala replied to Wheresthebeef's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The GMO "Aqua-Bounty" frankenfish "salmon" is a one type of salmon with the genes of an eel and another type of salmon inserted in it. So of course they want to let some company bio-manufacture this crap in a foreign country, and export it to be sold here. THIS is why we need GMO labeling in at least one state in the U.S. to set standards and force these... -
ARCHIVED What Do You Use For Shampoo?
Takala replied to RPM's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The Dove products are okay (for gluten). The celiac itself can cause you to be losing hair, and the resulting non- absorbing of nutrients because of damage to the lining of the gut can play havoc with skin and hair quality. Thyroid problems can also cause hair loss. Going gluten free can result in your hair coming back in thicker (mine did). You can...
