  1. One time last summer we were at some outdoor gathering and I came up to my spouse to give him a kiss and he turned his head at the last second and kissed me on the cheek. I gave him a really odd look and he said - but "you didn't know that I just ate a regular sandwich when you weren't looking." It's not consistent. I mark my water bottles with a sharpie...
  2. Clearly Another BYOGF Situation according to The Sacred Text of Avoiding Holiday Disasters.
  3. You mis read the article. She wasn't criticizing gluten free foods, she was criticizing the fact that Whole Foods marketing ploy is to make them more expensive than they would be otherwise at the regular grocery competition, and that this marketing ploy of higher prices, fancy decor, and exclusiveness was showing that the impact of the economic recession...
  4. Your health trumps their feelings. Bring all the food you intend to consume yourself. It would be easier to make yourself a plate of it up and pack it in a large cooler, along with your desert serving and some snacks. If you are feeling magnanimous, you can also bring some gluten free things for the glutenoids to eat, like a gluten pie, rolls, etc,...
  5. That's a good article but I think from what I have seen on wikipedia about the genetic distribution, the incidence in the Irish is much higher than stated, she has it lower than the world average.
  6. That's the basic recipe we use, but we have also done it with canned coconut milk for a dairy free version, honey (less by measure) and used pecans on top instead of crust. It is really rich this way. The wheat is not missed.
  7. Fresh sage is really good in stuffing.
  8. Good article. The writer used the Asian Indian cuisine names for the alternative gluten free flours. There was one typo where they used "allergy" twice in a sentence where they were meaning to use the word "intolerance" when describing the difference between food allergies and intolerances. LOL at the Lady Gaga pic in the header.
  9. For a single bun, you can make a "bun-in-a- cup" in the microwave, in a small bowl or ramekin. You can also make a small batch of batter and make 2 or more, one after the other. Any sort of quickbread recipe can be cut down to make one of these, and it cooks in about a minute and a half in the microwave. These are also called "wonder buns," Open Original...
  10. I tend to avoid "modified food starch" in any processed foods that do not specifically say "gluten free" or "starch was derived from corn" right on the label, precisely because of these reactions. I know my reactions are real, and I know what supposedly "safe" foodstuffs they came from. Unless the company is willing to say what country and what manufacturer...
  11. You can use coconut milk instead of real milk for coffee creamer.
  12. I put extra virgin olive oil in one cruet bottle and gluten free vinegars in other cruet bottles, and just sprinkle it on the salad, then add some salt and maybe some sweetener. Sometimes some fresh chopped herbs like parsley, cilantro, or basil. Super fast and easy. I have also done this mixing it in a small bowel and added things like lemon juice...
  13. Former SCD now recovered to where I can do some grain carbohydrates. Eating more (good) fat to act as a slow burning fuel so you don't crash and burn as often, as well as the protein and vegetables, is the trick to this.
  14. I have had horses all of my adult life and have allergies to a lot of things associated with horses, but not to the actual horse itself. I'm allergic to some hay. When I feed, I put an oversized long sleeved shirt on backwards over my other shirt, so it acts like a smock with the buttons at the back, but I don't have to button it. I also wear a baseball...
  15. The Gluten Free Girl, aka Shauna in the LA Times piece, very upbeat, just like the person it was about. And she is a great recipe maker, too !!
  16. Oh, very nice response by Dr. Vicki after all the negative publicity about the supposed bad effect of the gluten free diet being pushed by the MSM all year.
  17. ______________ "Doesn't want your son to be different ?" Fact: Over 30% of the population carry the genes that pre dispose or give them the ability to develop celiac disease or gluten intolerance. The triggers are not all known, but can be things like infections, surgery, or perhaps exposure to toxins. If he inherited part of those genes from Husband...
  18. Well, you could always wait for the autopsy.... Remember that one of the symptoms of celiac and gluten intolerance is brain fog or fuzz on the part of the sufferer, lack of wanting to change diet but this myth that the medical profession can somehow produce a medication to relieve the symptoms, and denial on the part of the medical profession that...
  19. That is a good link about the reactions to chai lattes at Starbucks. I used to get a consistent, bad reaction (migraine) from them and could not resolve the issue after grilling them about the ingredients- they said they were using Silk soymilk, and Silk is insisting that they're gluten free also. So if it is supposedly not the soy milk, then it's either...
  20. I've had a reaction to it that was not a gluten reaction but definitely something. It reminded me of reactions I've had in the past to antibiotics, a slight pinpricky - itchty sensation a few hours later on my legs. It really bummed me out as I really like chocolate mint. My theory is that I'm either sensitive to the food coloring, or an unknown ingredient...
  21. It's more a matter of seeing what is available where you shop, then researching the contents if it does not say "gluten free" on the label. Even with a fresh turkey, your main concern is did they inject it or soak it in anything, and if so, what did the broth contain ? I know the year before last, I messed up. I normally pick up the fresh turkey at...
  22. I am more independent minded than most. If a group of people whose purpose was supposed to be concern about my welfare kept asking me to go to a place where I was in danger of getting sick, I would just tell them no, I can't go there because it has a great chance of making me sick and let the chips fly where they may. I don't expect people to be able...
  23. I never did get what was so great about stuffing, so that's not a big deal to miss out on an overcooked sodden little wad of bread. We cook our own special holiday dinners gluten free. I can't think of anything that can't be converted if it is necessary to use an item that had flour. But most Thanksgiving food is gluten free anyway. Turkey, vegetables...
  24. Ugh, costochondritis. It's the pits. Yes it eventually goes away. But she may have to tinker with the gluten free diet and refine it for her own needs at first. I went completely grain free in the beginning, which is not as difficult as it sounds, I just used a lot of almonds and almond meal instead of grain. Once in a while a gluten free commercial...
  25. Depends on the situation, but I usually say I have auto immune disease and I'm gluten intolerant, but by being careful with what I eat, I can control the symptoms very well and I'm partially recovered, other than the arthritis. If it's a restaurant, if they don't know, I will say "food allergy" I am allergic and cannot tolerate at all any wheat rye...
