ARCHIVED Benefits Of Giving Up Gluten Are Few, Unless You're A Celiac - PerishableNews (press release)
Takala replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
There is the bleeping quote by the " registered dietician" again about how supposedly the gluten free diet is becoming a "fad," and "leads to nutrient deficiencies and weight gain." I wonder if this person ever thinks about getting cross contaminated from kissing somebody or sharing a dish at a restaurant. Probably not. -
If you eat a low carbohydrate diet, you have to eat more fat, and vegetables and fruit or you will go hungry, simple as that. When I was doing the SCD years ago, and trying to still be physically more active than most people, I found that out in a hurry. Suggest you add the egg yolks back in to your omelets. Add a serving of fruit on the side. Add...

What do I make of it ? Stop popping Valiums, they'll make you depressed. Stop listening to Rush, that would make anyone depressed, hopeless, and hostile. Start taking a B complex vitamin, a multivitamin, and a calcium magnesium supplement. All are calming. Eat a fresh fruit and vegetable every day. Exercise. Go For A Walk Everyday...

ARCHIVED Do You Pee A Lot?
Takala replied to scuzy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I used to have to go a lot, lot more, and had frequent UTI's. It was protein and calcium crystals in the bladder, irritating it, because the body will rob your bones when it's malnourished, to maintain calcium levels in the blood, only nobody knew why at the time. I got a little bit better by taking a lot of calcium citrate, don't take calcium carbonate... -
ARCHIVED Arrowhead Mills And Cross Contamination?
Takala replied to MissPatient21's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm doing better off of their peanut butter and on another brand that is merely "peanuts, salt" and labeled as not being made on shared equipment, while the Arrowhead was labeled gluten free but made on shared equipment. I'm not that sensitive but I kept getting really groggy after having peanut butter at lunch. No more. -
You can also make a gluten-free bun in a cup, microwave, only do it in a ramekin so you have something shaped like a little round cake. Then do as you described, slice in half, to make 2 half moon shapes. Then stand on the flat end and slice into the round end. Recipe, roughly, is a small glop of olive oil, 1 egg, dash apple cider vinegar beaten in...

______ Good explanation, but I suspect that we might be more vulnerable to other food sensitivities or food allergies than the general population. A possible consequence of leaky gut.

ARCHIVED Glutened - How Do You Cope With A Severe Reaction Out And About?
Takala replied to T.H.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
_________ Ah, Cattle Cars With Wings. Why I loathe flying, the stewardesses always treat me like a cross between a leper and a pariah, because I'm sure somewhere earlier during the security check they flagged me for attempting to pack trail mix, a few Lara bars, and a hard boiled egg so I wouldn't starve to death if I was taken hostage in the airline... -
ARCHIVED Glutened - How Do You Cope With A Severe Reaction Out And About?
Takala replied to T.H.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh, girlfriend, doesn't that just blow like a Santa Ana in the fall, or what ? People may disagree with this, and that is okay, but since this is my immune system going boinkers, I will put a damper on it, I try to drink a lot of water, and I also will take a Claritin antihistamine and some sort of NSAID such as an ibuprofen (Advil type thing, make... -
ARCHIVED Any Campers, Backpackers, Hikers Out There?
Takala replied to Lostfalls's topic in Sports and Fitness
__________________ You gotta snack more. On the keeping up energy when hiking, if I'm strickly adhering to a lower carb diet I'm okay because I can run off my body fat- but if I've been higher carb, I can get into trouble. I carry a lot of homemade trail mix with me and eat it and drink water before and during, and I always have a stash of Lara bars... -
ARCHIVED Getting Back With Sweetie, He's Going Gluten Free
Takala replied to txplowgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For the lactose intolerant you can always take gluten free yogurt, such as that Greek Fage stuff, and thin it with some water to make a creamy sort of liquid for gluten free cereal. Add enough artificial sweetener and flavorings such as a dash of cinnamon or vanilla and it's workable. You can also take unsweetened boxed milk substitutes such as hemp milk... -
ARCHIVED What Would You Do In My Situation?
Takala replied to KevinG's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would have had a very different adult life if the internet had been available for me to research on at half the age I am now. I would have avoided a lot of damage. I had to self diagnose as an older adult based on a combination of research, observing my symptoms, and medical tests and trial and error elimination diets, because the medical doctors... -
ARCHIVED Celiac diet costly - Calgary Herald
Takala replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
Well, that was exasperating. It may be "commonly accepted" that in theory oats should be safe, if they are raised and processed gluten free, but it doesn't mean that in reality every celiac or gluten intolerant person can still eat them- reactions vary. The writer says that a loaf of bread costs her $7.49. This is why so many people, if they chose... -
ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed, Questions Inside Post
Takala replied to Lindsay630's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This is the best auto immune disease to have, if you have to have one, because all you have to do is stop eating gluten, and it relieves the symptoms. Very easy compared to the alternatives ! Get a new toaster, colander, and cutting board for yourself, minimum, if your family does not go gluten free. If you're baking gluten free breads, get a new... -
ARCHIVED Distilled Vinegar Question
Takala replied to Mizzo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So far, Heinz vinegars such as used in their ketchup has been safe. As for other brands of mustards, do not automatically assume they are gluten free, they vary in what the other ingredients can be. Same for other brands of pickles or pickled type sauces such as prepared horseradish, etc- the vinegar itself may be okay, but the "other" seasonings may... -
________________________ It's a good idea not to give people bad advice that will result in their getting cross contaminated. Repeat: Oil residue is extremely hard to remove from most surfaces without a thorough washing. Hair conditioner does NOT wash out. Suntan lotions are designed to stay on with water exposure, and sweating, for several hours...

____________ I continue to be mystified by this fantasy that one can put wheat filled hair conditioner on one's hair, which is designed to leave a persistent oil based residue, even when rinsed, use a towel on the hair to blot dry it, then rub the towel all over the body and not be coating one's self with gluten. Then touch any food products afterwards...

ARCHIVED Following Gluten Free Diet Without Having Celiac Disease
Takala replied to irish daveyboy's topic in Publications & Publicity
I thought this sounded familiar. There was a whole slew of these back in May, when the article was first done. In the United States, the gluten free diet or a low carb diet is considered radical by the general public, thanks to the completely idiotic "Food Pyramid" eating guide that the US Dept of Agriculture came up with to replace the Basic Four... -
___________ Look, this is a political issue / power trip that is played in academics. You are a dweeb, as is every graduate student, and the professors/advisors want the students to acknowledge their power, so they'll play little games like this. So you have to nip this behavior in the bud, right when it happens, or they'll continue to play...

For "dough enhancer" just use pure 100% apple cider vinegar.

ARCHIVED 1 Month Gluten Free - Still Some Hiccups
Takala replied to IveGotEffinCeliac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Only a month isn't that long. You could still have cross contamination issues that you are not aware of yet. Be sure you are not accidentally getting gluten from old cooking pans, toasters, colanders, cosmetics or pet foods or somebody else's crumbs. Depending on the amount of damage you have it is going to take awhile to get healed up and be able... -
ARCHIVED My Blood Test Was Negative
Takala replied to firefightersgal's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You could always wait a few more decades for the other major side effects and damage, like brain lesions, spinal stenosis, partial color blindness, other visual whacks, arthritis, dry mouth/eyes, hair loss, mystery rashes, neurological damage, tremors, numbness, kidney problems, etc and then have them tell you you're.... still a head case. Much of this... -

ARCHIVED Something New With Larabars? Possible Problems
Takala replied to DaffodElle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Oh, wow, look at all the gluten free packaged nuts they have, I need to check this out as I am having trouble finding PLAIN, UN CROSS CONTAMINATED sunflower seeds. Whole Foods, if you read the bags now, they are produced in a facility with wheat and packaged in Texas - STUPID on their part. I always thought I had a sunflower seed problem and it was... -
You just have to train yourself to read labels, like a reflexive reaction, before you eat anything. This is an auto immune disease reaction which interferes with how you absorb nutrients, hence, the very real physical reaction in turn effects how efficiently your brain is working- or is sort of sputtering and short circuiting. Taking gluten free vitamin...
