ARCHIVED Unsure Whether This Had Gluten In It Or Not
Takala replied to smile's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That quote from the movie was "Soylent Green is People" and they weren't kidding..... -
I hate sauce painting. Take a multivitamin, a B complex, calcium w/ vit D and magnesium. It will come back This is the time of year when everybody's hair falls out because you are seasonally shedding for your winter coat, just like anyone else.

ARCHIVED Substitute For Sour Cream And/or Yogurt In Recipes
Takala replied to Loey's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Coconut milk for the fat and texture with some gluten-free pure apple cider vinegar added for the acid that is in the yogurt. Or you can just add another form of fat such as as coconut oil, or gluten-free shortening, or olive oil, and the vinegar, about a half teaspoon to a teaspoon. And this is for BAKING. -
ARCHIVED Confused Have I Been Diagnosed Now ? Finally
Takala replied to Dellers's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It means that they would like you to try a gluten free diet to see if it will relieve your symptoms, in spite of the fact that your bloodwork and biopsy were "normal." Gluten intolerant is what they call people who are ..... gluten intolerant, who can't eat it without reacting to it, but who may or may not have the "official diagnosis" which is usually... -
ARCHIVED I'm About To Start An Elimination Diet...
Takala replied to StacyA's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This doesn't make sense. Why not just give up dairy or give up dairy with lactose, such as milk, and use dairy without it, such as aged cheeses and some yogurts ? -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Have This Problem?
Takala replied to Rowena's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have seen Contadina brand canned tomato paste, with added flavors with gluten. Right on the label, is wheat. Never assume. That is what gets you in trouble. Most canned single ingredient items are going to be okay. Some are not. -
ARCHIVED The staff of life isn't for everyone - Sacramento News & Review
Takala replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
_____________ Because she was just repeating it, without understanding where the original talking point came from and why it was being used. Celiac is a very real auto immune disease. Gluten intolerance is a very real auto immune disease. It is not a "big fad" and questioning the increasing incidence of celiac and the need for celiacs and gluten... -
ARCHIVED The staff of life isn't for everyone - Sacramento News & Review
Takala replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
O.M.G. That isn't the worst article I've read recently, but it is up there. And I have been to that store in Sacramento. Somebody needs to tell the owner that if she does interviews, chances are very good that the person writing the story, if they are a typical reporter, (no serious math/science courses, superficial research) will be an idiot... -
If they were putting peanuts in drugs willy nilly and randomly there would be heck to pay, but put wheat in and it's so what, it didn't kill you. And this is eventually going to lead to another massive poisoning like the melamine in the pet foods, and then in the Chinese baby formula, because if they can't track the gluten they can't really track...

ARCHIVED Looking For Chili Recipe
Takala replied to Wenmin's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
_________________ Use canned pumpkin for the thickener. If you don't want to use a chile powder, you can use chipotle tabasco sauce or a few small ripe jalapeno chile peppers, finely diced, seeds discarded. Do not touch seeds and then touch anything else first without washing your hands. Cumin is a good spice to add, as well as some pure apple cider... -
ARCHIVED I Have Celiac, But No Sickness When I Cheat... Help!
Takala replied to moats1234's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Don't get too cocky. The longer you stay off, the more likely you're going to notice what it feels like. I've gotten really sick a few times from cross contamination where I never did find out for sure exactly what it was, other than I had eaten something out of the ordinary that day, that had the possibility. One of the things that really aggravates... -
ARCHIVED Pumpkin Muffins! - It's Fall! - Scd Legal!
Takala replied to ShayFL's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I make mine in a dedicated blender, in small batches, and while it's sort of meal like, it always bakes up better than one would expect. Then again, I like sort of dense bread as opposed to fluff. -
ARCHIVED Ater 3 Weeks I Discovered Pristiq Has Gluten In It
Takala replied to Blessings's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
How awful. According to wikipedia this drug is made by Wyeth in Puerto Rico. Most drug manufacturers get their raw ingredients from China, and there is just not the consistent quality control for the filler starches or binders from the exporting end. In this country we also have no requirement (so far) that the major allergens be called out on the label... -
ARCHIVED 4 Tazo Teas Have Gluten
Takala replied to BRUMI1968's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Watch out for Starbucks because that is the brand they sell. They almost got me once when I asked for plain green tea on a trip and they put some sort of flavored green tea in the cup - which I thankfully sniffed before taking any sip out of. Ask to see the teabags to be served in the original wrapper and you dunk it. 2 weeks ago at another restaurant... -
ARCHIVED What's The Bread That's Inedible But Makes Good Stuffing?
Takala replied to luvs2eat's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
__________ Re Cornbread stuffing It's American. Corn, tomatoes, potatoes, beans, squash, all are original native foods, as well as quinoa, amaranth, and some others. This sets off a drool reaction in me, and I'm not even Southern, altho I can cook a little that way. Cornbread is a traditional sort of bread that goes with country cooking in Appalachia... -
ARCHIVED Halloween Candy
Takala replied to Dixiebell's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
"When in Doubt, Throw it Out !" by law they have to disclose ingredients and point of origin so you may want to contact the FDA and save the empty bag after pitching the contents. The stuff might even have been recalled or re packaged. Here is a safe Gluten Free or Allergen Status Halloween Candy List for 2010 - Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Can't Control Hypoglycemia And Celiac Together? Help :o(
Takala replied to Melissaann829's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
_____________ Oh, for the love of ***** . "dieticians." should take the white rice and potatoes and .... nevermind. You need to become a high fat and protein nibbler, but currently you may not be able to handle fats well for a little bit. How are you with the cheese, okay ? If not okay, that ability to eat cheese may come back later or... -
ARCHIVED Help I Feel Like I Am Killing My Husband
Takala replied to ksymonds84's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
By process of elimination: If he's eating Udi's and Rudi's, then those ingredients are okay. I found a list for Deby's gluten free flour blend which says it's "rice, potato, tapioca, xanthan gum. " You said this was used to make fried calimari ? what was the calimari fried in, and was the pan free of cross contamination ? udi's bread is "Water... -
ARCHIVED What's The Bread That's Inedible But Makes Good Stuffing?
Takala replied to luvs2eat's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
_________________________ I've been making my own gluten-free bread for years. Recently we went to a good gluten-free bakery and got some really good fresh gluten-free stuff. So my spouse, now emboldened, goes to the store and reconnoiters the frozen bagel section and asks me which brand I thought would be better to try next - Kinnickinick... -
Are you on a B vitamin complex and calcium/mag mineral complex to help with cravings ? Are you eating enough dietary good fats ? My spouse and I make special trips once in a while to gluten free bakeries to stock up on that sort of "treat" stuff I can eat safely. Other wise, even 7 years into this, I still have some aversion to what people think of...

ARCHIVED How Do I Teach A Grandparent To Be Vigilent?
Takala replied to twohokies's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Is the child's pediatrician on board and can you drag her to an appointment ? Or is there a support group around you can take her to ? Is your house gluten free that if she's coming there and you've made sure she didn't bring anything with her, you can have it be safe there ? Since this is a hereditary disease there can be a TON of denial going on... -
I'm not sure how one approaches a British physician on this. I would research what the symptoms are on YOUR side of the pond, see how many you can match to yourself, and then maybe go and say, every time I eat chips that come with battered fried fish I feel really sick to my stomach, or have to go too many times. There probably is a food that is supposedly...

ARCHIVED Should you be eliminating wheat from your child's diet? - CBC.ca
Takala replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
Uhm, uh, yeah, we're supposed to comment here if we want. Why would the board owner be wanting to delete a bad article when he can have real life celiacs and gluten intolerants reading them and critiquing all the mistakes, especially when they're that bad. I have noticed this year after reading dozens of these stories and seeing a few things on video... -
ARCHIVED Bread Cost Effectiveness
Takala replied to SayJay's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
_____________ Depends on what you end up using as ingredients and what your tastes in baked goods is, plus whether or not you like to bake and experiment, or just want to get it over with. Some people just want to buy a pre made mix and dump the thing in the stand mixer with the eggs and liquid, or into the bread machine, and have bread show up an... -
