ARCHIVED Celiac Disease Discrimination
Takala replied to KSUmarlow04's topic in Publications & Publicity
No, no, no, don't "give" them the benefit of the doubt and don't let them force you to purchase and subsidize other student's food. You have (from a legal standpoint) a medical disability that they are refusing to accommodate- when they could do so very easily, just by letting you opt out. I do not know what the contract is that you sign to reside... -
ARCHIVED Living Harvest Hemp Milk
Takala replied to jnclelland's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Haven't seen this yet but I haven't made the pilgrimage down to Whole Paycheck in a while, I'm out of Hemp Bliss. Living Harvest brand was starting to give me bad headaches, so I wonder if this had anything to do with it, I had stopped using it. More likely one company bought out another. Here's a product description and the new carton picture: Open... -
As a "non officially diagnosed" gluten intolerant person, who has had other auto immune problems for her entire adult life, including many neurological symptoms which mimiced MS, and who SELF DIAGNOSED based on a brain scan, showing lesions, that the doctor told me STILL had nothing to do with my diet, I was infuriated by the grotesque "food trolling...

ARCHIVED Any Ideas For Dairy Substitutes?
Takala replied to jststric's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You can find Hemp Milk at health food stores and the big chains like Whole Foods. There are two major brands, Living Harvest, and Hemp Bliss. Something in the Living Harvest gives me headaches, I don't know if this is a batch problem or a reaction to the rice syrup but I switched back to Hemp Bliss again. It tastes sort of odd but once you get used... -
Oh, that is ... not good. Let me study it a bit and formulate a response.

You should post what you eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner so we can trouble shoot it. IF you are that sensitive, you don't want soy milk because a lot of gluten intolerant/celiacs don't do well on it because it depresses thyroid function. Also, avoid Soy Dream and Rice Dream- they are labeled gluten free but many people have reported here that they react...

ARCHIVED Frequently Asked Questions

 :D -
Like we'd want to eat beef patties cooked on a grill where the "angus wheat" seasoning was flying around cross contaminating everything. McDonalds: now entering the category of even more non celiac/gluten-free friendly.

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Have Costochondritis?
Takala replied to Tiff's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yes, I've got it, it's inflammation of the connective tissues of the ribcage and is associated with AS or spondylitis arthritis, a sero negative (non rheumatoid) arthritis. Mine goes along the lower ribcage more. The inflammation moves around from body area to body area. I don't seek treatment for it because it has lessened so much after sticking to the... -
ARCHIVED Help! On The Diet For 18 Days And Still So Fatigued
Takala replied to JillianLindsay's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It could be either, it can be frustrating. Be sure to eat lots of "good" fat such as found in nuts, seeds, gluten-free peanut butter and avocados and olive oil, to provide slow burning fuel. Eggs are also high fat and high protein. You may also need to eat some sort of starchy vegetable, such as beans, (well drained and rinsed), potatoes, or corn, to... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Specialities Rye Bread/flavored Flat Bread Review
Takala replied to Eric-C's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I love rye bread, I have to figure out how to do a decent gluten-free version, at 7 bucks a loaf, I could get motivated. -
Your primary mission is to keep yourself gluten free and happy and healthy. Not eat what somebody else wants. Really, some people get on these "the rest of the world must go vegetarian kicks and eat more grain ! and just won't let go of it. Or they process carbs differently than the rest of us. And I say this as a fan of some of the alternate...

ARCHIVED Staples To Have In Your Kitchen
Takala replied to Jennifer2's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Try to find a health food store, they will have a lot of specialty items that may be cheaper than Whole Paycheck. The closest WF store near me (about 22 miles and 2 traffic jams) is so bad on layout, having scattered my desired items all over randomly, I prefer the smaller stores anyway except for a few items- the one further away is not as bad, but... -
ARCHIVED Do You Become More Or Less Sensitive To Gluten Over Time?
Takala replied to NYCCeliacMom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've been off of it for over 6 years and am finally getting more sensitive, and I'm not the type that reacts as badly as some of you - well, I react, but it's a lot differently. I feel sort of bad reading about some of these reactions sometimes. Then I think, well, maybe nobody would like my reactions, either. -
ARCHIVED Is It Celiac Disease Or Gluten Intolerance
Takala replied to bananababy42's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you are eating a gluten free diet, after some time, you will test negative on the blood panel for the antibodies to gluten in the bloodstream and for the immune system response. If you are eating a gluten free diet, you will also eventually heal your gut lining intestinal villi (almost all of the time) and your endoscopy will probably not show any damage... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Pet Food -- Really Necessary?
Takala replied to OliveBranch's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have most of them on gluten free now (all inside pets) except the barn cats. With the dogs, at least two, both from the pound and both are half of a certain large breed mix, are definitely sensitive to it, so that was a no brainer. The one drools a lot and who wants that stuff around. One dog gets dry food and two others get half dry and half a homemade... -
Romantic weekend, eh ? Don't hate on me for saying this, I'm only the messenger, but .... what did he eat before you got sick ? Yeah, I bet a lot of you never thought of that before.

ARCHIVED Can You Guys Critique My Evening Please?
Takala replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You did fine. Sometimes in spite of the best attempts, this is what happens. Approach it from the mental vantage point of you want to make friends with this waitperson, because you want them to care whether or not you got glutened. Hence, sometimes I've eaten at places where it's a bit riskier because of no official gluten-free menu, and you'd think... -
ARCHIVED Scientific American Article - Aug 2009 Issue
Takala replied to CeliacMom2008's topic in Publications & Publicity
Actually, I don't anticipate a long lifespan. When I had day surgery last year, I instructed my spouse to not, under any circumstances, leave me alone in recovery nor let them give me food- if I had to stay, he was to go to the car and get the packed bag of gluten free food. Given the total incompetence and greed of the medical profession, if I lost my... -

ARCHIVED Just Went Gluten Free And Feel Terrible..is This Normal?
Takala replied to nj36's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, it is possible. I didn't but I have read of so many others... it is a typical reaction. When I was trying to figure out what to avoid, I would get into these funks where I was unknowingly cross contaminating myself. I would do fruit and water and green tea only for several meals and that would clear it up. At first you're hungry, but then your... -

ARCHIVED Soooo Confused! Please Help!
Takala replied to still coping's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Two things. One, if you are diagnosed celiac or gluten intolerant, or , if you KNOW you are gluten intolerant, you can not eat wheat, rye, barley, or things made of them. period. end of story. Two. Whoever told the original poster not to drink water with meals ought to be taken out to the back forty and left there to rot. What rubbish. DRINK WATER... -
Get yourself a big ice chest cooler and pack it full of yummy things for yourself, and also have a carry bag of non perishable foods you know you can eat. I always pack food and then treat restaurant dining as a supplementary activity- that way, I don't worry about the possibility of getting sick. My spouse might go thru a drive thru and I get a sandwich...

ARCHIVED Celiac Jewelry?
Takala replied to Becci's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
___________ Do you have a bead shop anywhere near where you live ? Or have you ever been to a Gem and Mineral Show ? Or something like a crafts vendors display at some activities ? Have you ever seen a Tandy Leather catalogue? Or been to a Michael's craft store? Or a western store that sells a lot of tack supplies for showing, they will have...
