ARCHIVED Almond Butter Cookies
ShayFL replied to msmini14's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Those sound good. Wish I could have eggs and white sugar. But I did find a Teff/Peanut butter recipe on Bob's Red Mill site and I replaced the PB with Almond Butter. Everyone who has tried them, loves them. Shay -
ARCHIVED Diabetes And Celiac
ShayFL replied to dollamasgetceliac?'s topic in Related Issues & Disorders
And make sure you are addressing any deficiencies you have. Many nutrients affect blood sugar: VITAMIN D AND DIABETES Gabe Mirkin, M.D. A study from Bulgaria shows that giving vitamin D supplements to diabetics during the winter markedly improved control of their blood sugar levels. The majority of North Americans require sunlight to meet their... -

ARCHIVED Diabetes And Celiac

This is what I had done: Open Original Shared Link Plus antibodies to insulin and my pancreas. It explains what the HbA1c is. Fasting glucose will not give you the complete picture. Since celiac is connected to "Type 1 Diabetes" (in children AND adults), you may wish to have your doctor check your antibodies to your pancreas as well. Do... -
Cats groom themselves non-stop. Their coat is covered in their saliva. She is putting gluten all over her coat. Everytime you pet her, you are getting gluten on your hands. I would find a gluten-free cat food. I have all my dogs on gluten-free food. They lick themselves. That is my guess.

ARCHIVED Shout Out To The Pros
ShayFL replied to L.A.'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That is a new one. I am not aware of anything that "kills" gluten. Hmmmm and whole wheat has antioxidents (i.e. vitamin E). I wouldnt trust it personally. But that is just me. -

I guess saying "lifestyle choice" makes it sound like something you want to do. And to me that is what the article made it sound like. It lends credence to all of those people that think we are just being "picky" and that there isnt really anything wrong with us. We are just "choosing" to be different. Choosing to avoid something that makes you so sick... -
ARCHIVED Your Personal Celiac/gluten Intolerance Story
ShayFL replied to emcmaster's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Layne, I read your story. I work from home as an artist. I can come in here while paint dries. Bravo!! For taking your health into your hands. Researching and finding what was causing your problems. I feel kinship reading your life story. And I am sure many of us feel the same. I am sorry you went through all of that, but know that... -
Wine is good. Tequilla is also ok and so is Rum. There may be others. But I dont drink and only use for marinades. So you can google if no one else knows. You should make sure any kind of "facial cream" "aftershave" that you put on your face is gluten-free. As well as your toothpaste. Crest. Dove brand is good for creams. And Burts Bees is also...

ARCHIVED Looking For Some Answers
ShayFL replied to A&Z'S MOM's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I believe I got glutened from "pre-sliced" fruit from a store. Better to buy "whole" fruit, wash and slice yourself. Curry powders could have fillers with gluten in them. I wouldnt use them unless they list all ingredients. Things like "spices" are suspect. And "natural flavor". The curry powders could be a significant source of gluten. You can... -
I hope so too Home Based Mom. I remember when avocados were the good fat, then they were bad, now they are good again......LOL Hopefully no researcher or diet author will ever come up with a "gluten is good for you" diet. All it takes is one skewed study and some will run with it.

I agree that "fad diet" is different than "lifestyle" which denotes a permanent change. I guess food manufacturers will have to keep up with the "fad diets" to produce foods for people that are "choosing" for whatever reason. And we all benefit. Especially if more diet book authors shun wheat/dairy/gluten. Let's hope so!!

ARCHIVED Grind My Own Flours?
ShayFL replied to Netzel's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The Vitamix works really well. I still sift, just to be sure. But it is superfine. Yes. I hated to get rid of my old Vitamix that served me for 15 years. It still worked great! But it had gluten in it. So I bought a new one. I could have just bought new canisters, but for two of them it was like 200. And then I thought, if this "old" one breaks,... -
I posted this in another thread a few days ago, I agree that it was good until I got to "lifestyle" choice. Who on earth would choose this lifestyle?

ARCHIVED Living With A Non-celiac Family
ShayFL replied to NorthernElf's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I got a new kitchen at the same time Dx. So it is 100% gluten free. I got lucky here. My family DH and DD agreed, no gluten in the house. We set up a "station" in the garage for gluten products. We used the old refridgerator and microwave, toaster and set them up out there with a table. They can then eat outside of the garage in a patio area. It... -
ARCHIVED What To Expect....
ShayFL replied to RainyZ's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Such wonderful news!! It will just keep getting better. People say insensitive things sometimes. I have done it myself. It comes from speaking before reviewing your thoughts. It is rarely mean spirited. Your neighbor's comment stems from their own insecurities about their weight. It has nothing at all to do with your daughter. So I have tried very... -
ARCHIVED Still Bloating And Cramping After Glutten Free For 7 Weeks

I can tell you that you are not alone. I am around 8 weeks in and I have ups and downs. Had a really bad week last, but feeling pretty good today. And no migraines in the last 6 weeks!!! Yeah!!! Hang in there....it is normal to not heal on a constant incline. -
ARCHIVED My Wife Has Recently Been Diagnosed With Celiac ...help!
ShayFL replied to HarryB's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
And she may need to cut out DAIRY, at least for right now. She can reintroduce it later. But my understanding is the tips of the villi in her intestines are compromised and it is those tips that produce lactase, the enzyme that helps digest milk. Casein which is also in milk bothers a lot of celiacs. And some can never eat it again. I agree to keep... -
ARCHIVED Diabetes And Celiac
ShayFL replied to dollamasgetceliac?'s topic in Related Issues & Disorders
That is interesting Pete. And makes sense that there would not be a standard "normal" reading. I dont actively "worry" about my blood sugar. But I do keep tabs on it. I get regular blood work annually. And with he meter, I only spot check. And this might sound funny, but if I feel tired during the day and want to take a nap, I sometimes check it. If... -

ARCHIVED Diabetes And Celiac
ShayFL replied to dollamasgetceliac?'s topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have had a monitor for 12 years. I get a new one every year. I am not diabetic. But both my Grammy's were. I keep close tabs on it. Keep in mind that the meters are not 100% accurate. They can be off by as much as 10 % - 20% either way. They are just used as a guideline. So dont panic if you get a 140 reading. You might not be "damaging" your... -
ARCHIVED How Clean Did/do You Make Your Kids Keep Their Room?
ShayFL replied to TrillumHunter's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I am a neat freak. My 12 y.o. DD is the exact opposite. For awhile it caused a lot of tension between us. I hated the tension far more than the messy room I decided. So now, we just have a few rules and I leave her alone otherwise. The floor must be clear of debris (fire safety). No food or drink allowed. And once a week she must empty her hamper. ... -

ARCHIVED Grind My Own Flours?
ShayFL replied to Netzel's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have used a coffee grinder, but then I sift it through a fine strainer to get out any larger bits. You dont want to hit those in your muffins. But now I have a Vita-Mix with a grain grinding canister. Works great!
