ARCHIVED Diagnosed By A Gluten Free Diet Alone?
dilettantesteph replied to dizzygrinch's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
When I wore my glasses which I did all the time, my vision was becoming unfocused. At first I thought it was a side effect of diabetes, which I didn't know I had, but is related to celiac. My vision was getting worse and worse until one morning before I put on my glasses I realized that I saw better without them. I got them 10 years ago or so when I could... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Belly Part 2: What Kind Of Jeans Do You Wear?
dilettantesteph replied to munchkinette's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I was so happy when low waisted jeans came into style. I couldn't handle anything tight around my waist. This way my waist can do what it wants in terms of expanding and contracting and the jeans still fit. Just be sure to have a long loose top. -
ARCHIVED 5 Y/o Sick Since Starting School
dilettantesteph replied to margie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You are justified in getting teary. I thought I had it bad! At my kids school there are lots of assistant teachers following kids around. I wonder if your child could get one until you can get the situation resolved. Of course it would have to be someone willing to learn about celiac. There must be some contamination coming from somewhere. Or could... -
ARCHIVED Blisters On Tongue And Mouth Sores
dilettantesteph replied to DinaB's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I got them all my life until I found out that I had celiac disease and stopped eating gluten. I haven't gotten them since. My son, whose diagnosis saved my life, gets them when he is glutened. They take a long time to go away. I have found them listed as a symptom of celiac. -
ARCHIVED Need Help...high Calorie/fat Ideas Gluten/dairy/soy Free
dilettantesteph replied to RissaRoo's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My son was diagnosed with celiac disease in December. He also had reflux. He threw up 10 times a day and has always been skinny. He went on an acid free diet I found on line, I think it was no fat, tomatoes, soda, dairy, chocolate, citris. After a couple of months the reflux went away, and he could go on a normal diet again (except gluten). He also was... -
ARCHIVED 5 Y/o Sick Since Starting School
dilettantesteph replied to margie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You might want to check to kind of soap used in the classroom and bathroom. They could implement a food free area in the playground. My son got sick at school a lot too, and they kept insisting that it was school phobia. Very annoying! There should be a food free area in the classroom. We are working on that at my son's school. Is he bringing his own... -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed By A Gluten Free Diet Alone?
dilettantesteph replied to dizzygrinch's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My son was diagnosed this way. The doctor wanted to do a blood test, but regretably, I didn't listen to her and tried diet alone. He seemed better within a couple of days. This is after I had tried the diet myself. My diarrhea that I had for years went away overnight. You should notice an improvement right away, but it depends on what your symptoms are... -
ARCHIVED Benefits Of A 504 Plan With The School
dilettantesteph replied to Breila's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Are you likely to be able to get a 504 plan with a pediatricians note if the diagnosis is based on response to diet and not tests? Are they likely to get that involved in the diagnosis? Would trying to get a 504 plan open a whole can of worms for me? -
ARCHIVED I'm Moving To Providence, Ri
dilettantesteph posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have to move to Providence, RI. I can't leave my grocery store. They mark all their store brands as to whether or not they have gluten in them. I have never reacted to any of them and I have reacted to all sorts of other supposedly gluten free stuff. Can anyone out there put my mind to rest. Do yiou have info on the best stores, restaurants etc.... -
ARCHIVED Grr! Periods Mess Everything Up!
dilettantesteph replied to mysecretcurse's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Some friends and I have noticed that regular exercies really helps with menstrual cramps, and it's good for you too. Might like to try it. (And don't be pissed with me.) Stephanie -
ARCHIVED Briannas Salad Dressing
dilettantesteph posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm trying to figure out a reaction. Anyone have problems with Briannas? It was poppyseed, which they said was gluten free when I e-mailed them. I think it was the only new thing that I had, but I'm not sure. Stephanie -
ARCHIVED Depressed - Troubles Eating
dilettantesteph replied to Genie75's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I get really depressed when I am glutened. It isn't just because I feel bad, it is because celiac messes with your neurotransmitters. Really watch for all those hidden gluten sources like medications, vitamins, envelopes, cross contamination with processed foods. If you get yourself really free from gluten you just might find that all those other bad things... -
ARCHIVED Do Sensitivity Levels Go Down?
dilettantesteph posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
For those of you who have been gluten free for a long time, do you find that you no longer have as many issues with things like cross contamination because, perhaps, the amount of gluten that you need for a reaction has gone up? I'm hoping. It seems like the symptoms get less severe as I get more healed. Comments? -
ARCHIVED "manufactured In A Facility That Processes Wheat"
dilettantesteph replied to *lee-lee*'s topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Don't do it! My son and I have gotten sick so many times from that sort of product. -
ARCHIVED Ok- I Give Up!
dilettantesteph replied to Gina C.'s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Before I found out that I had celiac and went gluten free I got a yeast infection every time I had sex. Not too good for my relations with my husband. Things are much better now. Apparently when the guts are inflamed they are a good place for yeast to live. I wouldn't assume the gluten free diet isn't working. There are so many things that contain gluten... -
ARCHIVED Newbie..need Help With Bread Please
dilettantesteph replied to Mandy2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I haven't found a already made bread that I like. I spent too much money on bread that I threw away because I couldn't force myself to eat it, and no one else in my family would either. Now I make the Bob's Red Mill bread mix from time to time. I make it in muffin tins to make buns and that is pretty good. Even my non celiac daughter likes them. -
Found out I had celiac disease at 48 when I went gluten free after son was diagnosed. Mother died of lymphomia at 47. I know I've been sick for a long time. I have had problems with UTI forever. Spent time getting tests in hospital at 3 years old. As a teenager I started drinking cranberry juice and that stopped the UTI problems. Much later some study...

I feel the same. Haven't done it though. Those things are too tenpting. These gluten reactions really suck. I finally decided to carefully check any new thing I eat on this site first to see if any super sensitive person has written in saying they had a reaction. Last time I did that, didn't find anything and still got sick! Stephanie

ARCHIVED Gabe Got Glutened
dilettantesteph replied to FoxersArtist's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I feel for you. I am so sorry. My child is fortunately old enough to say no for himself. At times like these I try to concentrate on the positive. How good it is that we now know the source of the problem. It is great that he is not like that all the time and he will be better again soon(?). My son was so skinny all his life and now he is finally putting... -
Just curious because I am sensitive to gluten-free oats and seem to also be sensitive to small amounts of cross contamination. Other celiacs can eat things that make me sick. That might just be that I am early in the diet and not healed yet. I am wondering if there are subclasses of celiac disease out there. Someone else wrote that she thought that people...

ARCHIVED School Absences And Leaving School
dilettantesteph replied to CeliacMom2008's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son, 11, missed 49 days of school last year, during his diagnosis. They kept threatening us with child protective services. They were convinced that it was school phobia despite the celiac disease diagnosis that I brought in. On the few days when he was well enough to go in, they would take him out of class to talk to the social worker about his school... -
ARCHIVED Can The Pressure End A Marriage?/
dilettantesteph replied to glutenfreegirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It has definitely been hard on my marriage. My son (11) was diagnosed and that is what made me realize that I had the same thing. In trying to not get sick I had already gone through a series of changes in diet and at first this probably seemed like another. You would think my husband would have taken things more seriously with my son and his doctor... -
ARCHIVED Best Doctor Ever!
dilettantesteph replied to betsyabailey's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son's(11 years) doc (ped) was equally wonderful. I wonder if I didn't even need to do the gluten challenge with him, which also made him really sick. We only lasted 3 days. Maybe the fact that going gluten free made him stop throwing up would have been good enough. She also probably saved my life by suggesting that it might be celiac disease that...
