ARCHIVED Very Depressed, Suggestions....
dilettantesteph replied to Lindsay630's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You might want to look into iodine supplementation. Do you eat iodized salt? Sea salt doesn't have enough iodine. I had terrible problems with depression when glutened. It had already got better before I started iodine supplementation, but when I did, the rest went away too. Now I don't get any depression when glutened, and a lot less irritability too... -
ARCHIVED Nighttime "accidents"
dilettantesteph replied to WVSweetie Pie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It could be that you have become more sensitive to trace gluten. As I did, I found that I could no longer eat "gluten free" flours. I started buying my grains whole, sorting through them, washing with soap, rinse, dry and grind to make my own flour. That way I didn't need the diapers. I found recently that I need to peel my peaches. That caused the same... -
ARCHIVED Cooking In School Class
dilettantesteph replied to GF Jeannie Marie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son went to study hall during 7th grade "home and careers". At home we did the sewing project, the volunteer hours, and the cooking projects. He put the things into her mailbox and she graded him based on that. Her communication with us was terrible, she wouldn't answer e-mails, but he got through the process without getting sick. Not only is there... -
ARCHIVED Walking First Half-Marathon - Any Advice?
dilettantesteph replied to TrickyMama's topic in Sports and Fitness
I just did my first mini triathlon this past summer. They handed out wet sponges at some point and I almost didn't take one. I'm so glad that I did. It was very refreshing. Be sure to take it. It took about 2.5 hours and all I had was water (about 16 oz) and a few banana chips and I was fine with that. Good luck. -
ARCHIVED Nighttime "accidents"
dilettantesteph replied to WVSweetie Pie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My daughter suggested it to me after seeing an accident when I had ingested gluten somehow. It's got to be embarrassing buying them, but probably better than cleaning up the mess. Maybe I should try it. So far it hasn't happened in the bed. I am a very light sleeper. It has happened right next to the bed though. I hope you improve soon. No one should... -
ARCHIVED Hard Topic To Discuss Tmi Sorry
dilettantesteph replied to cecilia celiac's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I found that baby wipes made things worse. I had started using toilet paper slightly moistened under the tap instead. In a public washroom you can go to the stall, get some toilet paper and moisten it before you go in. That is, if you aren't racing to get there as fast as possible. LOL If you are still having a lot of D, you might need to clean up your... -
I just noticed that the original post was from 2006! I've had problems with both spices, which I think can be cc, and mushrooms, which I think can be grown on straw and hence also cc. I would say those are the most likely culprits. Hope you figure it out.

ARCHIVED Change Bowel Movement Time?
dilettantesteph replied to tehjrow's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I find that I have to go earlier if I get gluten contamination, and when I am really gluten free, I go much later. Also coffee brings it on. If you have coffee in the morning at home, maybe you could try bringing it to work instead. Probably after you settle into gluten free better, things will improve. -
ARCHIVED Hidden Ingredients
dilettantesteph replied to nickim's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Some spices are contaminated enough to bother super sensitive celiacs. -
ARCHIVED Sesame Oil !?!
dilettantesteph replied to NorthernElf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have had problems with both sesame seeds and fish. Hope you feel better soon. -
ARCHIVED 10 Months Gluten Free And Still Not Recovered
dilettantesteph replied to gary'sgirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My son, pre celiac diagnosis once dropped the chocolate part of an ice cream bar on the floor and promptly went down there with tongue out. I think that couches and carpet could be a problem. Maybe you could just get the carpets cleaned (make sure the cleaner is gluten free) and the couch recovered rather than going all new. There are all sorts of... -
ARCHIVED Anybody With Kids Who Has "accidents"?
dilettantesteph replied to abjhenson's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son hasn't had accidents, but I do. When I get trace gluten that is what happens to me. It makes it hard to leave the house in the morning. It usually clears up by afternoon. I suggest that you look into cross contamination carefully. That might be causing her problems. Add new foods one at a time, one per week, or at least every few days. It can... -
ARCHIVED 10 Months Gluten Free And Still Not Recovered
dilettantesteph replied to gary'sgirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am very sensitive to trace gluten. For seafood, I go to the counter and ask them to get me stuff directly out of a new package with new gloves. Then I wash it with soap when I get home. When I got it the normal way I got sick. I imagine someone handled it after handling something breaded. For meat, I buy big pieces, like $50 worth. Wash and cut up... -
ARCHIVED Need Advice From The Seasoned gluten-free Folks
dilettantesteph replied to pixespirit's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I got much more sensitive over time. It's been almost three years now and I am on a whole foods diet. I even have to peel peaches. It seems like pesticides might bother me. On the positive side, I get over glutening much faster now. -
ARCHIVED Does Doubling The Gluten Double The Symptoms?

ARCHIVED 3 Years Dx'd And Still Feel Like Crap! Please Help!1
dilettantesteph replied to Joni63's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I trained last year for the sprint triathlon that I did this summer. I found symptoms returning when I pushed myself with exercise. I think that it made me sensitive to lower levels of gluten. Or maybe, it just made me aware of low level glutening. Anyways, I cleaned up my diet by reducing processed foods and got so that I could train without feeling... -

ARCHIVED Trouble With Kinnikinnick Donuts
dilettantesteph replied to finally diagnosed's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I love Kinnikinnick donuts. My local store didn't carry the chocolate ones back when I could eat them. I had to mail order them and I did. Unfortunately as I got more sensitive to trace gluten I became unable to eat them anymore without having symptoms of a gluten reaction. Are you sensitive to a lot of processed foods? They are very careful there, but... -
I have found stuff that looked like wheat in my corn. Maybe that was your problem.

ARCHIVED Increased Sensitivity After Going Gluten Free?
dilettantesteph replied to williamsburg000's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've been trying to see if eggs are causing my morning sneezing. I cut them out for two weeks and it seemed to get better. Then ate them again and it seemed to get worse. Now I am cutting them out again. There are so many other possible triggers, it is hard to tell. -
ARCHIVED Increased Sensitivity After Going Gluten Free?
dilettantesteph replied to williamsburg000's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I got more sensitive. First I felt great just cutting out bread and cheerios. Then more and more. Now stuff tested to 5 ppm still gets me. I do mainly whole foods. Good luck. -
ARCHIVED On The Couch For 2 Days!
dilettantesteph replied to vbecton's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
When I do, I feel like I've been glutened. I don't know why. Last time for meat, I got a leg of lamb, washed it carefully and cut it into steaks. That worked well, but it was gross cutting it up. I also get sea scallops. I request that they guy put on fresh gloves and get me some out of a new package. When I got some the normal way, I got very sick... -
ARCHIVED "made In A Facility That Processes" Labels Shown To Represent A Real Risk
dilettantesteph replied to Skylark's topic in Publications & Publicity
Thank you. That goes along with my experience. Unfortunately, not having that label doesn't necessarily mean that it isn't. -
ARCHIVED Kid Covered In Wheat?
dilettantesteph replied to K8ling's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Some of us are afraid to eat in restaurants because almost every time we have eaten in a restaurant we have gotten glutened. Some of us are more sensitive to trace gluten than others. We don't want to live in fear, but for some of us, eating in restaurants is about equivalent to others of us eating normal bread. It isn't an unreasonable fear.
