ARCHIVED Help Me With Quinoa
Roda replied to organicmama's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I rinse it regardless if it is already washed. I don't think they rinse it good enough, at least for my taste buds. -
ARCHIVED Can An Infant Have Gluten Problems?
Roda replied to glutenfreemamax2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
When I breast fed my youngest son I had to eliminate all dairy, oats, rice and tree nuts. Reflux was still an issue, but I didn't know about gluten at that time. Funny how I look back now and realize I felt pretty darn good during those first 12 months of breastfeeding, I was gluten light without knowing it. He was almost 4 when I was diagnosed and he... -
I have made the Betty Crocker brownies with coconut oil instead of the butter. YUM!

ARCHIVED Help Me With Quinoa
Roda replied to organicmama's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Make sure you are rinsing it very well. It has a bitter coating on it and if you don't rinse it it will taste off. I have made this several times and love it. Good for the cool weather days. It is a peruvian quinoa stew. It is vegetarian, but it probably would be really good made with chicken stock and bits of chicken too. I'm having this for supper... -
ARCHIVED Endoscopy Looked Good
Roda replied to svroche's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would at the very least consider him gluten intolerent and put him gluten free since all his testing is completed. My oldest boy has been negative on everything for the past three years and even had a negative biopsy in Aug. I've finaly come to the realization that tests don't always answer everything for us. He has been gluten free since the end of... -
ARCHIVED Gerd Vs. Celiac
Roda replied to Duhlina's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I agree, it really is pointless to do the genetic test. You have a diagnosis! What more are they trying to prove? My boys or I have not had the genetic tests, and unless I have it done privately, I'm not going to either. -
I make my own laundry powder: 2 cups borax, 2 cups washing soda, 1 bar soap (fels naptha, zote, etc.) ground/shredded fine. Mix all together for laundry powder. I've been drying my soap out in the microwave then adding it to my food processer with some of the other ingredients to get it powdered. It works well. I use about 2-3 tablespoons full per load...

ARCHIVED Why Does My Bread Have A Bump On Top?
Roda replied to Katrala's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Heck yeah, french toast for breakfast tomorow. Nobody else has tried it yet, but I don't think they will care for it as is. But they will be happy in the morning when I tell them I'm making french toast sticks! -

We use the Log Cabin All natural table syrup and like it. -
ARCHIVED Why Does My Bread Have A Bump On Top?
Roda replied to Katrala's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Bread wasn't crumbly, but way to sweet for my taste. If the boys don't like it I can make bread crumbs out of it. So not a complete waste. I'm trying to find a good bread to make finger sandwiches out of for our halloween party. I figure if my kids, and especially my husband, like it (hubby hates gluten free bread) then I can pass it off to a bunch of... -
ARCHIVED Gerd Vs. Celiac
Roda replied to Duhlina's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Definately the GERD can be a symptom of celiac. It was my main GI complaint and was relieved by going gluten free without meds. A little over a year after I went gluten free I started having bad GERD symptoms again. I had another scope and I had developed a peptic ulcer (I didn't have any ulcers on my initial scope). I did go on zantac to help heal the... -
ARCHIVED ? About # Of Biopsies....confused....
Roda replied to carecare's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would insist that at least 8 samples are taken just in the small bowel in different spots along with the other biopsies in the esophagus/stomach too. -
ARCHIVED Why Does My Bread Have A Bump On Top?
Roda replied to Katrala's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Made this loaf today. A little on the sweet side, but has a nice texture. I do think I let mine rise a little too much, because after I put in in the oven it over flowed and the extra plopped down on the sheet I had underneath. I have a long clay bread pan I will try it in next. I may use less sugar also. I didn't follow their instrustions for the flour... -
ARCHIVED What Are Your Favorite Foods/snacks That You Can Still Eat?
Roda replied to maitrimama's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Well said KM. It sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders!! This is the kind of attitude I'm trying to instill in my two boys. My oldest son, who is 10 1/2 is very much like this. He does or doesn't do something because HE wants to not because anyone else wants him too. He has been a trooper (he is not diagnosed celiac but doing a gluten free... -
ARCHIVED Spouse Is Nonsupportive
Roda replied to heyteacher's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm sorry you are not getting the support you need right now at home. If you haven't gone gluten free then if you want you could request the blood work: IgA/IgG tissue transglutaminase(tTG), IgA/IgG deamidated gliadin peptide(DGP), and total IgA. You could also do a scope/biopsy. If you want testing, and after you exhaust all the testing you want, do... -
I have something similar. I have a dry scaly patch just under my eyebrow. It will itch, get dry and scaly, slough off and the skin be red. Then the process starts all over again. I also get red and irritated behind my ear in the crease and on the back of the earlobe. It will do the same thing as the patch on my face. I tried everything immaginable to...

ARCHIVED Gluten Is Still Sneaking In On Me
Roda replied to Roda's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks, that means a lot. I do still have creon and I have to be careful and not take to much. The symptoms right now are very subtle. My husband has been sick with GI virus, URI and now sinus infection so there is sickness going around. I may eventually pay a visit back to the GI to at least get my blood drawn again. I'm curious to know what my levels... -

Canola oil. I've never thought to check for CC in oil. Something to consider. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Is Still Sneaking In On Me
Roda replied to Roda's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Stomach bothering me a little today, but I KNOW I didn't get any gluten. I did make fried potatoes for the boys two days in a row. Of course I ate them(they were so good) and feel like I still have a "fat" issue going on in the background. I'm not bloated up like I get when I get glutened. Eventually, I will get the gallbladder looked at again, but for... -
ARCHIVED If Your Skinny Child Gained Weight On gluten-free Diet . . .
Roda replied to Staceyshoe's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My youngest at his 5 yr check up was in the 10% for weight. At 6 year check up he was at the 50% for weight. Not sure if all the weight gain was from going gluten free three months prior or not( I do feel that it contributed a lot though) but they were impressed! He has grown leaps and bounds over this past year since he has been gluten free (1 year in... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Daughter In College
Roda replied to atzmmommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think there is a very high chance that over the summer program and eating at the college cafeteria, that she is getting gluten and cross contamination. Both could be causing the weight loss/lack of weight gain. You need to advocate for her so she can eat safely either in the cafeteria or get a waiver for the meal program so she can cook/feed herself. -
Were the plates removable? If they were then what about reseasoning it? There are people on here that say they have put their cast iron pans in the oven on the cleaning cycle to remove the gluten and then reseason.

We all go through our own way of dealing with this disease. I was angry in the beginning. I'm not angry now, but do get annoyed since I seem to be getting more sensitive. I don't get many invites anywhere either, but this isn't much different than before. I just don't have many "couple" friends that we do anything with. As for the people we do socialize...

ARCHIVED Gluten Is Still Sneaking In On Me
Roda replied to Roda's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Last year he didn't use the term refractory, but said sometimes it can flare up and the steriods can help. Funny, since I have quit the salsa and tortilla chips I have been fine so far as symptoms go. I haven't had any steatorrhea which is a sign that I have been glutened. I'm not as worried as I was when I posted this originally about the RF. I think...
