  1. Acid reflux was my main GI symptom. My PCP doc wanted to put me on protonix right away and I REFUSED! I told him that I didn't belive it was a good idea to be on PPIs long term. He scoffed and told me that I would do irreversable damage to my esophagus if I didn't take them. I still refused. My reflux was new, never had it before, so I wanted to know...
  2. All your symptoms could be consistent with celiac. It at least warrents testing. Blood test includes, IgA/IgG tTG(tissue transglutaminase antibody), IgA/IgG DGP(deamidated gliadin peptide), EMA(endomysial antibody) and a total IgA(validates the IgA testing). If indicated you can have an EGD with a minimum of 8-10 small bowel biopsies. The EGD will look...
  3. I did go grain free with the dog and cat food. Maily because they both like to lick, the dog slobbers a lot and the kids feed them(they both are doing much better on the grain free food too). The quail food has wheat middlings in it, but I wash my hands really well and don't breath in any dust. So far I've been fine.
  4. Are you gluten free also? She could be reacting to gluten in your diet as well. The other posters gave you some very helpful information also to consider. Hoe your little one feels better soon.

    ARCHIVED Dairy Queen

I just had some this past week and thought it was really gummy like it hadn't been in the freezer long enough. Guess not! I wasn't all that impressed. To the OP: We don't do blizzards because of the cc risk but will do sundaes with the regular toppings, buster and dilly bars and the frozen fruit drinks.
  6. My 7 year old was diagnosed when he was 5 almost 6. He suddenly became hungry ALL the time. It was nonstop for about 2 weeks and then it tapered off. He is hungry all the time again, but he is going through another growth spurt at the moment.

    ARCHIVED Barium Scan

Was he referring to a barium swallow, upper Gi series or a CT enterography scan? I was having trouble back in 2010 and I had a whole slew of tests. I had a gallbladder ultrasound, HIDA scan (gallbladder function scan) and a repeat scope/biopsy. When those failed to show anything, and 8 month later, my GI had me have a CT enterography study done to look...
  8. Sorry to hear about your sensitivity to oats. It is estimated that around 10% of celiacs react to the protein in oats also. It is called avenin sensitive enteropathy. I unfortunately fall into this category. I can not consume products that also have oat or potential oat cross contamination. So I have to call manufacturers to see if they use gluten free...
  9. I've had several people mention the Domino's pizza to me. There is no way my boys and I would eat it. If you are going to be bold enough to do something like that, you need to do it right from the start. I've eaten at Mellow Mushroom and have done well. They have separate toppings, pans and room for prep. They do share the oven though, but don't see...
  10. Here is another update on the Pigeon Forge area. I went with my oldest son's 5th grade class trip yesterday and we had a really great time. We visited the Titanic, Wonderworks and Dixie Stampede. As far as food, we ate breakfast before we went, lunch at Tony Roma's and the dinner at Dixie Stampede. I had called both places earlier in the week to see if...
  11. You don't want to stop taking a PPI cold turkey. You need to gradually wean yourself off of it or you will experience acid rebound. I've read several sources that recommend gradually lowering the dose and if need be use an H2 blocker to help with symptoms. If all goes well then you can probably get off the H2 blockers as well.
  12. My oldest son(now 11) has had various symptoms. Since birth he suffered constipation. Tried everything under the sun when he was little to age 4. He also suffered from Gas, bloating, abdominal pain, slow/stalled growth and cavities. He was around 7 when I was diagnosed with celiac. I had him and his little brother blood tested and they were negative...
  13. I would say they would go ahead with it if she is showing no active signs of being ill.
  14. If your going to get oats you have to make sure they are certified gluten free. I react to even certified gltuen free oats and cross contamination from them just as bad as wheat, barley and rye. This eliminates even some gluten free products for me.
  15. I'm a little confused if you are shocked that they want to help accomodate you or shocked at what the class is. Sounds like a great class and my boys would love every minute. From the response you got it sounds like the instructor is willing to make the experience work for your girls. Since she is willing, contact her to make alternatives for the kids...
  16. Yes stress and stressful events can be a trigger for celiac. It can develop at any time in your life. Just because you were tested and negative when you were 15 just means you were negative then. You could have developed it since. If you can while you are still on a regular diet, ask your physician/therapist to see if you can be tested. Testing even...
  17. Luckily, mushroom I did not go into a-fib. They did an ekg and other than the tachy, it was fine. I still don't feel quite right. I've decided that I too feel I need to supplement some magnesium. I'm going to put it to my PCP again and if I don't get anywhere with her I'll discusss it with my endo. As of right now I'm still swallowing the horsepills...
  18. If you are in the states and have Earth Fare, then you should find it. I found it at our local Earth Fare. I found it to be just as dry as Udi's but lighter. I'll probably keep buying it.
  19. I wish I could get someone to listen to me on that one. I originally went to the doc to see about doing something for the horrible fluid retention I have been having for the past 6 months. I agreed to try a diuretic since I was desprate for some relief. She told me it could drop my potassium levels and was scheduled for blood work in a week. I made it...
  20. I've used Suave, Pert Plus and Johnson's Baby shampoo in the past. This past winter was harsh on my skin and scalp. I thought now that the weather has gotten warm my scalp would improve. Alas it did not. I tried everything thing to temper the itch, dry flaky skin and the sores. I had it! I've reacted to hair care products in the past(not a gluten...
  21. I've been having issues in the past two weeks with tachycardia/chest pressure. Mine was caused by my potassium dropping to a very low level because of a diuretic I took for three days. So no more diuretic and the doc put me on RX potassium.
  22. If I was to have another baby now that I'm diagnosed, I would keep it gluten free until it was a little older because of the cross contamination issue. My youngest son and I have celiac and my oldest is non celiac gluten intolerent. However, I'm not having more children. When I was diagnosed both of my kids were on a full gluten diet. I had them both...
  23. It just goes to show that so many people have no clue what they are eating or where food comes from. My son's friend's grandmother told me she was allergic to wheat. Then she proceeded to tell me that she eliminated whole wheat bread and now only eats white bread..
  24. YUM! I have a few quarts of canned figs in the pantry that my MIL canned for me. I was thinking I would bypass the soaking and just drain the liquid and puree them. Since you are so knowledgeable do you think that would work?
  25. 1) Yes your children, parents and siblings(all first degree relatives) should be screened via blood work. A full celiac panel includes: total IgA, IgA/IgG tTg(tissue transglutaminase antibody), IgA EMA(endomysial antibody), IgA/IgG DGP(deamidated gliadin antibody) and IgA/IgG AGA(antigliadin antibody). The last one is being replaced by the newer more sensitive...
