  1. Thanks Peter, the article is well done (the comments are interesting though) the same story was on Global News here in BC last night as well so the story is getting exposure
  2. thanks for posting this, I love jelly bellys (hate the price though) and glad to have another "safe" item to add to the list
  3. I have the exact opposite reaction, I fall asleep after I have dairy. on the other hand my son get's quite hyper and does not sleep (and he is confirmed allergy to dairy and I now suspect intolerance to casein as well)
  4. Thanks for the link and the info, I really do appreciate your posts on the gene aspect (or lack of) with celiac
  5. what a great story! you've got a great one there
  6. Actually there's another way you can ingest it, I found out the hard way....just get it into your eyes. Tear ducts drain into the nose which then drains down your throat. So no one would have to "eat" hair dye/conditioner/shampoo, just get the rinsing water in your eyes and there's your potential glutening.
  7. Rum is made from a sugarcane base rather than a grain base so yes, all pure rums will be gluten free. the only place you might find gluten would be in an added ingredient however Malibu is one of my few 'safe" alcohols (I react to all the wheat or mixed grain based alcohols like Van Gogh) as for Pina Colada, should be, the ingredients are essentially pineapple...
  8. as each person is different it might take you longer to see results, although with a 3 year long headache I can certainly imagine you'd like it gone asap! one observation about your diet, have you considered cutting out all grains for a week or so? You were having quite a bit of gluten/wheat in your diet before and it looks like you replaced most of those...
  9. include the grill in this list too, if it's not wiped off properly before grilling gluten free food there could be cross contamination
  10. Betty Crocker Cake mixes, they're new and now have gluten free ones... Glutino products, they're available in Canada but priced with the usual markup if you have the ability to do cold/freezer (are you driving?) I've seen some parent mention gluten free chicken nuggets (I've only found fish sticks in Vancouver)
  11. not sure about those but can tell you that the Grimm's products are clearly labeled gluten free and I haven't had a problem with those, Costco has them and I think I've seen some at Superstore/Loblaws. Schnieder's (mostly at Overwaitea foods companies) products on the other hand I don't recommend, they seem to have gluten in almost everything
  12. *waves* me too! me too! I get the scintillating aura only in the left eye and just occasionally. My MD told me it was an optical migraine and not to worry about it, I had no idea that it was in any way connected to celiac I also get classic migraines, although infrequently, and have an olfactory aura with those....similar to what others have...
  13. Open Original Shared Link try this site out, the author is a celiac and traveling journalist I agree with the previous poster, don't let this get in the way of what could be a fabulous trip.
  14. hi David, I'm glad the primary person is willing to forgive you, what you described sounds like an unsettling experience. as for your question about how alcohol affects us, I too am self diagnosed but can say that in the past year and a half I've progressively become a "cheap drunk" in the sense that it takes less and less exposure to trigger a tipsy...
  15. As a fellow Italian I understand it's hard to substitute, but if you have to try grape seed oil it has a high flash point and is reminiscent of light olive oil, has a similar "mouth feel" to it. as for why you are reacting, have you tried it in isolation? or just with the "holy 3" (garlic, onion and tomato) try substituting the grapeseed oil for a week...
  16. Was this an experience you had while you were still eating gluten? or have you tried since going gluten free? just my experience but many reactions I had ascribed to certain "obvious" foods such as meat, yeast etc, reactions such as lethargy and bloating were actually a reaction to the gluten. Now when I eat those foods it's all good. You've...
  17. I echo what tarnalberry says, stick as much as you can to basic foods and go from there. make it easier on yourself, if you can spare the change and can do rice, get a rice cooker, throw in the rice, water, salt if you wish, turn it on and in 15 min you'll have a good base (better than crisps anyway) for other foods. make a tonne of rice and then...
  18. right now, too often. I also live in a mixed household and am careful but occasionally get glutened. I'm not sure what did it this time, but this week was horrible, D, bloating, cramps, nauseau, cranky, anxious. I cut down to rice and vegetables for 2 days to try and clear my system, think I'll go another couple of days plus I also found out there...
  19. I've noticed a similar reaction in myself, for years I had bruises up and down my legs from, I assume, bumping into things, bruises that lasted weeks if not months and I'd be stumped as to how I got them. it was not uncommon for me to turn a corner and hit a wall; as a child I was extremely ungraceful, my grandmother would call me "as graceful as the bird...

    ARCHIVED Smell

I get that vague nauseous feeling walking by a bakery that has the door open or one of the local big box food stores has their bakery right by the front door and vents the ovens to the front door....I loathe going through those doors! single piece of bread at home or pasta boiling is okay for me (mixed house, I'm the only gluten-free person) but large...
  21. Cross Contamination - can be anything from eating a gluten-free food that was processed on the same line as a gluten food to using a plate/pan/bowl that previously had a gluten food on it and wasn't washed well to using a toaster/butter/mayo/jam that has crumbs in it. just a thought about your post that you had more neuro symptoms than GI, from what I...
  22. um sorry, you have it backwards, Celiac is not an allergy, rather an autoimmune disorder and an intolerance, some sort of digestion/absorption of gluten is required and depending on the person, symptoms may not be immediately noticeable and can take up to 24 hours or more to materialize. people can and do die from Celiac related conditions (cancer...
  23. You do sound like you could be one of us! If you really want a medical diagnosis then you have to keep eating gluten and get a doctor to run the celiac panel of blood tests for you. You said you are a student and have no insurance, is there a free clinic at the college you could go to? (Sorry if that sounds odd but I'm Canadian and that's what we...
  24. if you are going to have the biopsy then keep eating gluten as stopping could affect the results. genetic or stool testing don't require the consumption of gluten, however these tests do not diagnose celiac. genetic testing tells you whether you have the genes associated with celiac or gluten intolerance but do not tell you if you have it (search...
  25. some things that have worked for me: a little aloe vera juice mixed with fruit juice or ginger tea can help the nausea and if it just won't go away try an acid reducer such as Zantac
