Hi Scaredandworried, Not everyone gains weight, that depends on a lot of factors. I lost 45 pounds in the last year. The problem for a lot of people is that if they have the nutritional malabsorption issues, when they go gluten free and they continue eating carbs and refined grains that are gluten free, their bodies start healing and they start absorbing...

ARCHIVED The Funny Pages - Tickle Me Elbow - The Original
Korwyn replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I totally agree! Did you ever see the 'Far Side' comic where all the Sesame Street characters are gathered for Thanksgiving (I assume) dinner and there is an empty chair and a Giant 'Turkey-like' bird on the platter in the middle of the table? -

Hi Oscar! You are my second favorite sesame street character. My favorite is the Cookie Monster! Years ago I used to play Quake (a first person shooter) and you could put different 'skins' on your character. I found out on the net someplace a Cookie Monster skin and loved playing with that - except that I absolutely stink at Quake. So one day... -
Hi Phillipa, One of the things to consider, as a number of people here will attest, the gluten/celiac disease can mask other things which, once the gluten is removed for a period of time you can begin to see what appears to be a 'return' of the gluten symptoms. I'm not saying this is what is going on with you, but it is something to consider. My experience...

Hershey's cocoa power (baking cocoa) is safe for me at least. I make my own (drinking) cocoa using coconut milk. Cookies we bake ourselves mostly, but the few we buy are from Pamela's. -

Korwyn replied to haleym's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Actually I don't believe it is a misconception. However what I should have stated is that UNTREATED celiac disease carries increased risk. Also I wasn't saying to make a request, I was merely stating that it could be one additional consideration (among many) to push one towards trying to get an official diagnosis. -

Sheesh...don't you know that's where we GROW microwaves? I supposed y'all thought the microwave stork brought them, hmmm? Illusive? I'm a fragment of my own imagination I take it.... Hmmm.... Remote: Don't have TV and I can't stand to sit in front of it for more than about 2 hours tops. I get stir crazy. So...no appeal there... -
ARCHIVED Uncontrollable Weight Gain
Korwyn replied to Rebecca Madrid's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Counselor, Fat retention and storage in the adipose tissue is more a function of hormonal issues (metabolism and insulin resistance) than 'calories in/calories out'. What is your average daily percentage caloric source breakdown (all carbs)/protein/fat) ? If you want to read something that might really help you (it is a very dense read, took me... -

We were supposed to get them t-storms yesterday. I'm glad we didn't because I was up on top of a mountain at a microwave site all day. It was drizzly, cold, and VERY windy but no lightning. The thought of lightning when standing in the middle of a half-dozen 150+ foot high metal towers on top of a mountain makes me a little nervous!!! -
What few real studies have been done for colon cleansing show no true benefit, and in some cases showed them to possibly cause or exacerbate existing colitis (inflammation of the colon). If it was me I would probably do an extended period (5-7) days of moderate fiber whole vegetable fasting supplemented with CoQ-10 (since you can't get that from veggies...

ARCHIVED Gluten Sensitivity
Korwyn replied to Sherri28's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you are being extremely careful I would expect you to be OKin this scenario. There is a physiological conditioning element that may be coming into play. I have a friend who has celiac disease who cannot even walk by a bakery and smell the baking (from the street!) without having his stomach start rumbling and developing gas. After years of conditioned... -

It might be worth it since one of the benefits of having the diagnosis is...well that you have a diagnosis. It removes the lingering mental question, "well maybe it really wasn't that". Also, in some ways it helps since with a diagnosis, some insurance companies will allow additional testing for things like bone density scans, melanoma exams, etc, since... -
ARCHIVED How To Lower Cholesterol?
Korwyn replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I so second Reba and mushroom both. My diet is now (over the last six months) changed so dramatically that it is pretty much the exact opposite of the dietary recommendations pushed by the AHA and the NIH. Yet my HDL/LDL ratio is better than it has ever been in my life, my triglycerides are better, I've dropped from 265 to 219 pounds, etc. Even when I was... -
ARCHIVED Gene Question......
Korwyn replied to Luvbeingamommy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Ok I'll try and give you a quick synopsis. There are 8 (possibly 9) genes identified as being related to celiac disease and/or gluten intolerance. A person could potentially have up to two genes - one from each of parent. This is very very over simplified, but basic. The percentages have much to do with dominant and recessive genes and things, but basically... -

Wow. It is, but perhaps he is concerned about osteo issues since low D not only inhibits calcium uptake but actually can accelerate bone mass loss. -
ARCHIVED Treating Vitamin D Deficiency
Korwyn replied to quincy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I get my blood work done every three months. My D was one of the really severe imbalances. After 6 months of 6,000 IU of D3 a day my Dr. upped me to 8,000 as my D level were still below normal, though improving. At 2,000 IU a day my level was at 18. At 6,000 it was 28. 30 is the low end of 'normal'. This has really helped my fatigue. I'll be getting rechecked... -
ARCHIVED Gene Question......
Korwyn replied to Luvbeingamommy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Luvbeingamommy! Yes, the "DQ7" gene would have come from your husband. Enterolab seems to test the widest set of genes that I have been able to find, though someone else on here might have more info. I know Prometheous didn't test for anything more than the two main genes as of the last time I checked. -
Hi Jen, I'm very similar. Since going gluten-free/CF/SF I've lost 55 pounds in the last year. But what I found is that I have a very high degree of insulin resistance and so I can't eat hardly any carbs. I had the same thing happen. Lost a lot of weight, then started to gain it back as I healed up. Turns out that if my carb intake is more than about 3...

Hi cool, If ten people respond you will probably get 20 answers. That is because it is different for almost everyone though many people share similar but not identical responses. Also the response can change over time. I now usually experience fatigue, headaches, painful joints (especially my ankles). The onset of the painful joints is new however...

ARCHIVED The Rest Of The Household...
Korwyn replied to NorthernElf's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have Celiac but my wife doesn't, though she showed a small amount of sensitivity on an IgG test panel. However our house is gluten free, and I do not allow anyone to bring anything other than beer into our house. The one time I allowed it in the last year was our daughter bringing our granddaughter's formula which has wheat in it. And despite how careful... -
Many people here have similar stories of decades of mis-diagnosis. Ataxia (balance issues) are a known condition linked to untreated celiac disease. All of the other symptoms you mentioned could be secondary or tertiary conditions as well. At 20 years old I started having heart attack symptoms. Off and on for another 20 years. I too was told it was all stress...

ARCHIVED Muscle Weakjness / Twitching / Neurological Symptoms?
Korwyn replied to GoPhils's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had many neuro, cns, and psych issues. Some of them actually got worse for a while after going gluten-free which was quite scary, and it has been over a year now. They are all not totally cleared up (some are, some aren't) but they are still improving. Almost all of mine were related to either additional intolerances (soy, casein) or nutritional deficiencies... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Food Making Me Worse
Korwyn replied to Apache's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Apache, Have you considered the GAPS diet? It is an alternative to the SCD, but even stricter in some ways. I wound up having to go on the strictest form for about 2 months but my intestinal healing improved SO much during that time. Also, because it completely eliminates ALL grains and most non-veggie and certain fruit carbs it has the side effect of...
