  1. always in learning mode

  2. Greetings! I'm here to learn. I hope to encourage others and pass on what little I know.

  3. boy, I'd like to hear something positive on this one too! Being intolerant of so many different things, finding gluten-free menus just doesn't get it for me either. Traveling is definitely challenging and not always possible to pack foods for myself. Someday I may kill for a pizza!
  4. well, isn't that interesting?? Who woulda thought that something external would help something like that! Thanks for sharing!
  5. I think we all grieve the fact we can't enjoy eating out and foods like everyone else. And being in college has GOT to be even worse. That stuff is around all the time. I'm sure even if he tries cooking some for himself, he's getting cross contamination not only in his own place, but others. Even if he's not into the cooking process so much he needs to...
  6. You could be intolerant of other foods besides glutens. I would suggest keeping a journal and see if there's a commonality or pattern to when you are bothered. I also suffered from a leaky gut in the beginning and had to heal it before some foods that were hard for me to digest would work for me again. 2 wkd of taking a probiotic helped that greatly. I have...
  7. you may be suffering from what is called "leaky gut", which I did too. When you first start realizing you are having difficulties digesting things, your intestines are described as looking like swiss cheese. The lettuce and greens will naturally be hard on them and not digest well. I also have many other intolerances but I did get my "leaky gut" healed...
  8. I buy Tofutti Cream Cheese at either Better Health stores or Busch's here in MI.
  9. I also take it and I really think it helps. I am also dairy-intolerant among other things and found Kirkman Labs has allergen-free products. Go to www.kirkmanlabs.com.
  10. I've only been at this for about 3 yrs and not a diagnosed Celiac. I recall just a few years prior my next door neighbor was a diagnosed Celiac and 2 of her sons. I didn't understand and when she would come over to a ladies Bible study she wouldn't eat things except fruit, etc and I thought she was just being picky.....but I DID have enough smarts to know...
  11. my thought was also the kitchen counters, etc. I wipe mine down alot as hubby and son are not gluten-free and the toaster and counters are often in use making sandwiches, etc. The flavored coffee idea is a good one also. And if cleaning the coffee pot doesn't include a good hot dishwasher, perhaps things such as wash rags with bread crumbs and such would...
  12. Unfortunately, there is Celiacs, gluten-intolerance and then allergies.....all which can affect you much the same but CAN be very different. There are so many different symptoms that affect people so differently, yet many things can be in common. The average Celiac takes at least 10 yrs to be officially diagnosed. I, personally, am only gluten-intolerant...
  13. Hmmmm, I was lactose intolerant 15 yrs before my glutens kicked in. I have recently noticed I can have a bite or two of certain kinds of cheeses wihout much repurcussion. But my major symptom is severe itching in private places. I would LOVE to try eggs again and see if I could do them occasionally too!!!! I miss them so much!!!!!
  14. How about suggesting the name of a local gluten-free bakery? And then bring a few items of your own for yourself? I can't imagine anyone being insulted with that. If they are true friends and love you like I think they do, they will take any suggestions and gently-put information. Please let them know that its really hard to not cross-contaminate unless...
  15. What a delight to get to perform with your son! I have played violin in many orchestras as well as play piano in many venues. My biggest thrill has been to accompany my son with his trumpet solos in school! This gluten and other intolerances many of us here suffer with certainly doesn't make life easy. But I'm really glad you got to perform!
  16. I buy those all the time and haven't had any problems. I've noticed since their new packaging, many of the things that said gluten-free no longer does. I don't know why other than perhaps since the US doesn't have clear guidelines for stating things are gluten-free, perhaps by not saying it gives them less worry about sue-happy people claiming they were glutened...
  17. I don't know about those products particular, I am also dairy-intolerant, so I understand the multi-food whammy. Just reading the ingredients on the cereal it would seem it would be ok, BUT I have found MANY, MANY, MANY, MANY (did I say MANY???) times that some products like your cereal there, chips, snacks, etc......that it is often cross-contaminated with...
  18. there are some soy sauces that are gluten-free....the little packets of Cari-Out seem to be fine, but you never know what they are using in the restaurant to cook in the food. I used to have a little local place that would fix any of their dishes for me with "white sauce"----strictly cornstarch and water, instead of the dark soy sauces they usually come...
  19. I had another thought. If you have time while in the Stowe area, about 15 miles away is Montpelier and the New England Culinary Institute (NECI). They run a restaurant called Chef's Table that is really good and run by the students and overseen by supervisors. Again, need reservations and I would tell them of dietary needs. I feel certain they would work...
  20. My doc also told me to do the same, but I'm very dairy-intolerant also. It took some doing to find a probiotic that was allergen-free besides the gluten-free. You COULD be reacting to some other food besides your gluten issues.
  21. The raw diet would be the same for her as any other diet. As long as her stomach and digestion can handle raw foods, that's great, but grains are grains, whether they are in a cooked form or raw form. Some raw foods advocates and vegans will argue that in their sprouted form they are easier to tolerate and that those of us that cannot do grains can learn...
  22. Thank you to the poster mentioning eggs and casein!!!! Those are both on my intolerance list. I know the feeling if guinea pig as I have so many intolerance that SOMETHING is likely to bother me. But when I stay home and dot own cooking I don't usually have to worry quite so much! Thanks everyone!!
  23. I've been reading that some wines might have barley added? I've never been bothered by wine before but I had a LITTLE of a Charles Shaw White Zin last night and definitely had symptoms during the night. It's the only thing I can think of that could have caused it. Thoughts?
  24. Lessons are usually learned the hard way, unfortunately. Relax. There's not alot you can do besides what you've already done. If there was a sure-fire cure, we'd all be in MUCH BETTER shape than we are. Best wishes!
  25. I used to live about 15 minutes from Stowe a number of years ago. I was not gluten-intolerant back then...sigh.....BUT my fav place to eat then was The Foxfire Inn. I'm confident that if you were to let them know when you make your reservations (suggested...at least back then) let them know of your needs and their chefs would be able to accomodate you well...
